    I watched Violet Evergarden back in early 2019, and since then, I haven't spent a single day where I didn't think about it. It's been a while already, but I still find it hard to believe that Violet's journey has come to an end. I'm just so happy that I came across this anime and decided to watch it. It will always have a very special place in my heart.

    In a world where it’s especially hard for men to be honest about their emotions, whether it be the patriarchy, toxic masculinity, or ridicule from friends, watching this show made me cry and understand empathy like no one else could, and really changed me as a person and made me more emotionally mature, and I truly believe I’ve become an empathetic person because of violet evergarden

      I definitely agree with this. There's such a terrible expectation that just because you're a boy, you shouldn't be allowed to feel emotions or empathy. You just have to 'deal with it'. It's such a toxic mindset and I'm glad series like Violet Evergarden can teach people otherwise.

    I too was initially really upset that Gilbert ended up being alive because the first season's ending felt so complete to me. It felt like some major themes in Kyoto Animation's adaptation were how to move forward through trauma and that your past doesn't have to define your future. Gilbert being alive felt like a huge backpetal on those themes and some others.
    While I haven't completely come around like you, hindsight and your video have made me realize that his storyline in the movie does help strengthen some of the other core themes in the series, which I can appreciate. Either way, Dasy and Yuris's plots alone make me absolutely adore this movie, as did the continued world building.

      I am thesame as you. Maybe one day Ill accept but I truly felt like Gilbert being alive is only done for fan service. It is a misstep for Violet’s growth. But maybe she cant really grow without him.

    • @sproutbeans4410
      @sproutbeans4410 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Ahh these are just some of my thoughts- But as someone who watched the series knowing Gilbert is alive, I still could see why people would be upset over Gilbert’s survival. However, I think VE theme had always be centralized around emotions, especially her love for Gilbert. At the end of the series, Violet only stated that she would tell Gilbert she finally understood what “I love you” meant if she saw him. I think her character growth was written beautifully, but I also believe the movie only managed to show that emotional growth much better. In the series, it displayed more of how she came to understand emotions, love most importantly, but never really was able to write/verbally say it out. However, in the movie- Violet was able to finally express out the most important emotion in VE, when she wrote “I love you” to Gilbert, which was a big step from initially just planning on telling him “I understand what I love you means” But yeah that’s just my opinion haha

      I too was a bit mad but it was a momentary thing. They didnt faithfully adapt to the light novel. Bits are missed and the entire order of the story and a parts of it are anime original. If you read the light novel the experience is vastly different especially how the story is written, the anime was very much based on violet finding what "i loved you" meant which caused her to develop as a character and overall the romance aspect of violet was more heavily emphasised in the anime. In the light novel (for the first 2 volumes) it was also based on this curiosity to find what "i love you" meant but if you read later on past the 2 volumes you will find that gilbert being alive also helped her develop in other ways and honestly its quite nice and it takes it further than finding what "i love you" means. Thus i didnt find myself all that bothered by gilbert being alive but i can see why some will. But at the end of the day happiness is happiness and i was just glad violet got to find gilbert and does not hold the regret that she didnt save him and understand what he meant when he said that to her before he disappeared

    • @pong6377
      @pong6377 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It didn't really matter whether Gilbert was alive or not. What went slightly "wrong" in my opinion was how violet delt with that situation and how it felt like Gilbert didn't earned it, writing wise in the movie. That's probably the reason why I cringed a bit when he said stay with me to violet. With how the movie was executed as a whole, I would have probably prefered it if they met but also went their separate ways. But I would've also been fine with the original ending if they could've just built it up better.

  • @peetr1283
    @peetr1283 2 ปีที่แล้ว +838

    When it first became clear that Gilbert is alive, I was honestly kinda mad, because the fact that he is not is what helped Violet mature and come to terms with her emotions (at least that is how I saw it). But apparently Kyoto Animations just cant ever fuck up :D. The best send off to a series I have ever seen.

    • @TheDwagonHD
      @TheDwagonHD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      @@hayabusahithosi9587 judging by the audio design.. it wasnt a straight headshot. As you can hear a metallic sound before he started bleeding/falling. This is also prob why he lost his helmet after that moment.
      My guess is that the bullet hit the inside of his helmet, shattering it, and shrapnel going into his eye.
      In a realistic sense, his most dangerous injury was his arm that got blown off together with violets.
      In all honesty, he had a way higher chance of survival than Violet ever did. (Losing both arms like that would cause you to bleed out in minutes. even if it had happened right next to a hospital her chanses of surviving the bloodloss and shock is close to zero. Ofc the same goes for gilbert but he just lost one arm)
      And iirc, by the position of the grenade when it exploded, gilbert was covered alot by violets frame.
      If your suspension of disbelief isnt broken by violets survival, then gilbert surviving his injuries should be an easier thing to swallow.

      They basically wanted to have it both ways. Gilbert is dead so we get to see Violet's reaction and the character development that comes from it even years later. But at the same time Gilbert is alive so we get to see the happy ending and Violet's journey be rewarded. Might not satisfy everyone but I was happy with the movie at least.

    Spoilers from the new movie, caution when reading.
    You can just tell how much violet wanted to say i love you and how much he meant to her. All she could say was 'I' and 'major', the first words she uttered as a child. Such raw emotions. Someone who was raised as a tool, can cry so genuinely. The major who never cries in front of anyone else, broke down infront of the one he loves.
    (Spoilers as i go deep into their philosophy)
    He felt guilty, he felt undeserving of even touching her, consoling her after what he felt he forced her to go through. He couldn't protect her, he caused her to lose her arms, he couldn't give her a happy childhood she deserves but in the end, he still loves her. He couldn't stand being separated from her even a second longer, not being with her as she goes through life. He was afraid of what might happen to her and can't stand the thought of her suffering on his behalf. All he needed was an answer, he needs to know how she feels no matter, whether its love or not, and then he could die happily knowing she has matured. Thankfully, it was a happy reunion.
    She was saved by him. Brought out of abuse, given a purpose and someone to protect. At first, he thought it was for protection but eventually both reliased it was out of love. She loved him ever since they first hugged, even before he confessed, he was the first light to her ever perpetual darkness. She would do anything to protect him. He is her first and only true romantic relationship she ever develops. No matter who else tried to charm her, she won't allow it because the one she loves has always been around her neck.
    Spoilers. They eventually vowed to be together forever and never leave each other side. They affirmed that they are the only one for one another and sealed the deal with a kiss. Both are disabled. One lost both arms, one lost an arm and an eye. But if you asked them, they would unquestionably say it was all worth it as their impact on one another is and will always be priceless. They would do it again in a heartbeat.
    Since childhood, he has a fear of loneliness. As a high ranking militant, he was sought out for status instead of authenticity. But now he has reunited with the one he loves and the same goes for her. If there is another season, it would dive into their respective insecurities as they have to spend time apart due to their respective jobs. Finally vented. 😞 Thank you for such a well crafted story.
    My heart is still recovering from reading the novel but as the author put in the epilogue, remember no matter what you are going through, violet will be waiting. No matter the place, time or situation. She truly is extremely precious and a masterful piece of creation.

      @@alaynawelker Thanks for reading 😊 You can read the entire series on Tumblur by dennoutranslation. You can start off from volume 2 chapter 13, whereby Gilbert and Violet were reunited on the train.
      Spoiler but they reunited way earlier than in the anime/movie. The last episode allocated to Dietfried was supposed to be Gilbert's role when saving her. Though all dialogues in the movie from Gilbert are also in the novel as well.
      A must read are Volume 4 chapter 4 and chapter 5 ever after, which are two of my favourite moments when the couple was interacting with one another.

      Letter Bee is underrated. It's also about the importance of letters but there is more of a fantasy and mystery element. Here's the blurb below
      "Gauche Suede is on his last delivery before a big promotion. In the outskirts of Yodaka, the darkest area of Amberground, Gauche is surprised to find that the package is a young boy named Lag Seeing. Lag had been traumatized by his mother's abduction and is due to be delivered to his aunt. In this remote area rife with Gaichuu, Lag and Gauche face a dangerous journey that inspires Lag to become a Letter Bee."

      yeah i agree with you, yeah the movie kinda of spit to the anime...... in anime, Violet is definitely learn that "shit happened but you must still need to move on cause life still goes on" but in the movie is kinda say "as long you put some faith in your tiny illusion and delusion of hope, your dream can come true" which is 180 degree message from the anime.

    Violet Evergarden is one of my most favorite series of all time. The storytelling, the character development, the sheer attention to detail in every animated frame, the evocative music, the dialogue and relationship building between all the characters…I can go on and on. KyoAni truly delivered a masterpiece. No matter how many times I watch and rewatch, it gives me deep senses of emotion like sadness, contentment, longing. I love it so much. It’s a bittersweet happiness that the series Violet Evergarden exists and was completed considering the tragedy with the attacks at KyoAni. It’s definitely something that will live with me forever.

    I'm sorry, but the movie and ending was terrible. It ruined the ending of the anime. The entire point was Violet coming to terms with Gilbert's death and learning to move on and be independent. Now he's back alive, she's back to him... like all of that didn't matter... The fact that he survived seemed like the author just resurrected him for more content. Or in this case, a generic cliche ending...

    I was one of the people over the moon with happiness about Gilbert's survival, but felt the angriest I'd ever been when he refused to see her. My heart shattered for Violet while I wanted to shake the hell out of Gilbert.
    He didn't hold violet back but was the catalyst for her emotional journey and his memory propelled her forward in many ways. Violet left so many people will fulfilled happy endings that I wanted nothing more than for her to have the ONE thing she always wanted. And for the one thing itself to deny her, I was furious and then sobbing my eyes out with happiness again at the ending.
    VE made me experience just about every human emotion. I cried in each episode then sobbed my eyes out in the final movie. I don't even know if I'm strong enough to rewatch it just yet but it's loved dearly.

    KyoAni shows' age like fine wine. Unlike flashy anime out there (which can be fun at times), their shows demand its audiene to have experienced life and to have grown emotionally to a certain extent to truly see the values. Other shows can also be sad, touching, filled with emotions but KyoAni shows change you, make you do things; whether to pickup an instrument, start playing again after loosing all the passion, or to just simple give your mom a call. Their work is spectacular in its own way.
    Also, its OST is Grammy worthy, if that award still means anything at all.

    I recently finished watching everything i could find on Netflix for Violet Evergarden. And its been a year since this video was uploaded so probably no one will see this, so ill be brief but i wanted to say what an amazing story it was, i dont really watch anime, but i saw an AMV that used VE as the video (it was only really the war parts) But it was enough, enough to get me interested and enough to spike my curiosity to go find it and watch what i could. And as far as i can remember ive never cried to a show before and i havent really cried in a long time. But after finishing it, i cried. This anime broke me, and im glad. It broke down the walls i had built so high and so strong that nothing could get through. So now ive made a promise to myself, a promise to rewatch this series atleast once a year and a promise to write letters to my future self, but not only them but letters to those close to me. I will not type them, but write them with pen and paper. Call me old fashioned but im not good with speaking words and texting can be insincere but a hand written letter could allow me to express the things i wish to say but dont have the strength to speak them. This is my promise. I know i said ill try to be brief and i doubt many would see this, but to those that do. And though I have no power to say this but I encourage others to take up a similar promise. A promise to feel and if you cant speak the words you wish to say. Then grab some paper and a pen and start writing and hopefully you will be able to express them. And remember "No letter that could be sent deserves to go undelivered."

    I totally felt what you said about the anime making us feel emotions that we do not find in live-actions. Most people wouldn't understand how a serie of animated drawings and 2D characters could convey so much feelings, but I am proud to be one of the few that do. I don't know, Japanese animation has a way to do with these things that always make us tear up at some point. I'm glad to see that people in the comments feel the same, and at the same time I am pretty sad that most of the persons out there won't give a shot to this kind of series simply because it's japanese animation. Still, I hope that in the future the story of Violet Evergarden continues to expand worldwide and captivate the hearts and the souls of humankind. Thank you for your video sir, you did a wonderful tribute to the serie.

    *_SPOILERS AHEAD_* for anyone who hasn't watched yet.
    I just recently watched the series and I never watched the trailer or read the manga and when they started hinting the Major might be alive in the middle of the movie, I thought, "I don't like where this is going". I was rather disappointed when it turned out he was. I felt it definitely undermined everything Violet went through. There's so many questions and things to be resolved between them all the sudden but we don't really get to dive into it and become as emotionally attached like other characters Violet interacts with. But what stood out to me the most was thinking about how Violet tried to end her own life at one point during the series but she picked herself up back on her feet through a ton of emotional development, only to find the person she wanted to see the most in the world telling her, "GO AWAY!". My IMMEDIATE thought was Violet may begin regressing back to selfharm because the ONLY person she lived for (regardless if he was alive of dead) rejected her. Thankfully it written so she didn't but it makes me wonder why that wouldn't be addressed even a bit. To me, it seems Gilbert was made to be alive to prioritize Fan Service rather than Violet's closure. Not to say she didn't get any closure in this movie but I think the ending would have been more emotionally impactful if he was truly dead and Violet finally got the closure she needed. His death added enormous emotional weight to Violet, her decisions and story and is what made me heavily invest emotionally in the series because she over came so much trauma. Regardless of how it ended, Violet Evergarden has a very special place in my heart and definitely my #1 anime right now. Also, I am not one to EVER even consider buying $300+ anime figures/models/statues but for Violet, I am REALLY thinking about buying one to put on my desk.

    Before I start the video. YES, ANOTHER ONE OF YOUR UPLOADS. I feel this way cause it's about my favorite series too (and Clannad). I personally feel like the movie was the perfect conclusion to the overall story the series started in season 1. All the character development, world building and story telling all culminated into this gorgeous work of art. I only started watching anime about a year ago, and Violet Evergarden was one of my firsts. Then in a magical coincidence, this movie was being released shown in America. IN ANOTHER WTF COINCIDENCE, my local theater was one of two... TWO in the entire state to have a viewing of it! I for the first time gathered a group together to see this, and it was so worth it. Seeing how this was the end of Violets story hurt, but the pain was well earned. It was all wrapped up nicely with no lingering questions or need for more content. It was and is the only happy ending I've ever cried to in all of media.
    This is all thanks to Kyoani as well... that was another reason I was even contemplated going the distance to pay them back for the stories that changed my life. They all did a great job... including the ones we lost. Thanks Kyoani and thanks Mr/Mrs/Ms/they/Apachihelicopter Nyaa. Have a great day and keep up the great videos!

    Initially, I really okay with ending of gilbert death, and the fact that gilbert still alive were made me bit dissapointed. But, honestly, after finished this movie, I couldn't express anything but gratefull to enjoy this plot. Becuz its tell us about Violet is still deserved to be happy, like all of us. But If we're not deserved, we're responsible for the happiness itself, whether by giving nor given. In many ways, our humanely instinct will strive for that. Even after traumatic rejection, Violet still be gratefull for Gilbert still being alive, an insipre her. But thankfully, we're human, as a creature of "being inspiring" and "being inspired". Let's says this good ending is a prize for those waiting patiently, for the greater good in the future.

    This show made me realize that many people aren't a slave to their emotions, they are a slave to a lack of emotion. To be human is to feel strong and complex emotions that ultimately add a very deep nuance to life and give it more meaning. This made me realize that being overly stoic and ignoring that entire aspect of my humanity was essentially forgoing a huge aspect of life. Needless to say I've grown alot in ways I didn't know I could grow after seeing this show. I highly recommend people give it a chance. Thank you for this! Your "emotional masterpiece" first video got me to dive into this wonderful show, and i can't thank you enough. It opened up some corners of anime i hadn't yet appreciated.
    Violet retaught me a lot about love and listening and the power of communication.
    Your video led me to this beautiful art, and if i ever have a daughter, maybe my Violet will thank you

    It's literally the only show or movie that has made me cry. I have felt a tiny bit emotional watching other shows and movies as well, but nothing has been even close to making me tear up. Violet Evergarden made me cry like a little girl.
