Shirley Booth, academy award winner who thankfully overcame the Hollywood need to be young and beautiful to fit in. I hope she appreciated her Hazel character as many as me enjoy it so.
Actors of Ms Booth caliber are rare. Most actors today rely on graphics visual effects. The actor today doesn't require talent in the acting craft. Ms Booth and other brought the entire package to the screen.
Here it is 2019 and I am enjoying the heck out of Hazel. I remember seeing her in “Come Back Little Sheba” with Burt Lancaster but was too young to appreciate it. Now I hope to see all of her five movies. What a gem she was!! I have to agree with the majority of comments. Shirley is one of the greatest actresses in Hollywood and Broadway history! She's one of only 23 actors and actresses who have ever won the Triple Crown of Acting: Oscar, Tony, and Emmy Awards! She and the cast of, "Hazel", were genuinely like a family and they had great chemistry...Don DeFore (one of my favorite actors), Whitney Blake, and Bobby Buntrock (sadly died in a car accident at the young age of 21 in South Dakota)….Shirley "adopted" Bobby on the set and was like a son to her as Shirley never had children of her own. For the last season, the show changed networks (NBC to CBS), DeFore and Blake were dropped and replaced due to contract disputes, and the show lost its magic during the '65-'66 season....Shirley said she was having some health issues and she made the decision to end the show, even though the network was wanting to renew it for a 6th season (I'd heard that she greatly missed working with DeFore and Blake and decided it on that reason). She was truly a classy, benevolent, gracious, and loving lady and I miss her!
Absolutely delightful interview featuring 2 American entertainment icons...Shirley Booth and Dick Cavett. Those were the days when folks like them were the people famous for TV and movies. Famous people are so different today...a certain magical charm is missing from modern day TV and movie stars.
I live in the UK, and have always been a fan of M/S Booth, since I saw here in, 'The Matchmaker'. To me, she played emotion like no other actor. She could touch you with a look, a word, a movement. Her Oscar was well deserved, and I thank God that Paramount had the good sense cast her in the film version. Because of, 'Hello, Dolly', the version of the original play, is unjustifiably overlooked,

Alan - thank you for posting this interview with Shirley Booth. If you don't mind, I'd like to suggest - all those that enjoyed Shirley in her role as Hazel might be interested in my upcoming book, "Growing up in Disneyland" about my Dad, Don DeFore, who played the role of "Mr. B" in that TV series. I've posted a short video about the book:
I have always had this question, and I am sure you can answer it for me - I was shocked when I learned how your father was let go from the show (Hazel), and always wondered if Shirley Booth could have done SOMETHING to prevent it. Or worse, was she the REASON he was let go? I have always wondered about that - if she had enough authority or not.
@@Monorail-Beyond-the-Veil Dad and Whitney Blake were eliminated when show was sold to CBS. It was a cost-cutting measure. Dad also had 10% participation so it was savings on profits as well. @@Monorail-Beyond-the-Veil Shirley Booth and my Dad remained very good friends even after the Hazel series. When NBC sold the show to CBS in 1965, as a cost-cutting measure CBS idiots dropped Dad and Whitney Blake which ultimately led to the show's demise.
@@rhd4444 Our family loved watching Hazel until the change in cast and story. Stupid NBC. It was very popular until that point. Another dumb move by NBC on its way down the tubes where it is today. The Peacock Network has lost its luster.
She was born in 1898 so she was roughly 73 depending on the month this was filmed. This would correlate to someone born in 1947 in 2020. Hazel would be a “ baby boomer” if this was interview was filmed today in 2020.
My favorite role of hers is Mrs Leslie.... I wish TCM would show About Mrs Leslie more often; but, I watch Hazel reruns every day and I really love that show
The following year, (1972) Bobby Buntrock, the boy who played Harold, the Baxters son on Hazel, was involved in a car accident, his car went off a cliff into a lake and he drown.
@INTERNETWORK Almost certainly.. but you NEVER can be too sure.. just watch him against his other interviews.. he's clearly drunk..and I don't mean just a LITTLE drunk. .I mean drunk off his ASS!
I never could get into Hazel but she's wonderful. I just saw her in the 1966 Glass Menagerie which in many ways can be considered "definitive", in my opinion. I'd love to have an opportunity to see her and Gig Young in Harvey!!
Omg she is so funny, love her face expressions. I first discovered her well watching Bewitched with my mom, she was on a episodes and she stole that whole scene and episode, I was drawned by her, I told mom that she was incredible women, she has the "IT" Factor and when she had a scene, everyone seems to disappear all around and she takes those scenes. I thought she was funny and had those funny face expressions that personality drew me to her, I knew she was special, so I decided to look her up on TH-cam and what do you know she has done array of stuff in Hollywood. Extraordinary lady and actress. Talented beyond measures.
Isn’t it funny how one of America’s great stage legends is remembered today for a mediocre sitcom? She was terrific as Hazel, but this lady was the Meryl Streep/Kathy Bates/Judi Dench of her era. Nobody was better.
This is great. I think this is the first interview I have ever seen Ms. Booth in. She is a hoot. Funny, while I was watching her, I kept thinking of Geraldine Page.
I have and will always love ms Shirley booth she was such an amazing person they don't make them like her anymore she was one of a kind r.i.p dear sweet lady
The movie stars and actresses and actors of yesterday had publicist who didn't allow their personal lives to be on public display unless it was good news publicity for a project. They controlled what got out and didn't let everything hang out just to be relevant. It was about their work not about their popularity like it is now. Folks now are in entertainment and some do not have a talent or skill just fans and followers. Shirley Booth was a good actress and earned the accolades and awards. May she rest in peace having left a wonderful legacy of work we still enjoy.
Build trust in an art form then hijack it to influence the masses - protocols of zion/mindcontrol/msmliars/georgia guidestones/depopulation/depression/suicide. At least we are waking up to it now and we can reclaim control of our lives
She always threw herself in any role she was given. She became the character she played and drew the audience in and kept them intrigued until the end. There has been no other like Shirley Booth.
Cavett was never a good talk show host. If you'll notice he is very self-centered, has to one-up or lightly humiliate his guest(s) and then, quickly apologize with an "I'm only kidding...". He wasn't, of course. Shirley Booth was one of our greatest actresses. Take a look at "Come Back, Little Sheba" and you'll remember her forever. She won the Oscar for that performance, and already had (3) Tony's in her belt. She earned "The Triple Crown" of acting awards when she added 3 Emmy's for Hazel.
For “Hazel,” she focused her voice in her mask (front of her face), creating the nasal sound that carried so well, and grated on Mr. B’s nerves…lol. :)

@@rhd4444 Yes, but I read your dad wasn't even contracted about it, but he read about it in the newspaper. That was pretty dirty!
@@rhd4444 Our family loved watching Hazel until the change in cast and story. Stupid NBC. It was very popular until that point. Another dumb move by NBC on its way down the tubes where it is today. The Peacock Network has lost its luster.
Loveliest Lady ❤
Shirley Booth "HAZEL"! Priceless times, priceless actress. One in a million!
I was surprised Cavett didn't introduce her as an Oscar-winning actress.
I like her so much and she looks great to be nearly 75 years old.
As I do when I take off hat, you make a good point !!
she was about 72-73 her birthday was in August , so depends what month this was filmed
She was born in 1898 so she was roughly 73 depending on the month this was filmed. This would correlate to someone born in 1947 in 2020. Hazel would be a “ baby boomer” if this was interview was filmed today in 2020.
@@califdad4 Shirley Booth looked about 48 in this interview
@@tomcarpenter700 she was born in 1898 and this was done in 1971so when you add it up she was about 73
I'm watching my recorded show, Hazel right now, on channel 323 Fetv...i love the show...Shirley Booth was a marvelous actress...
Hey
I watched Hazel for the first time a month ago & I fell in love with the show!!!!! I watch it every day!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hey
I am 37 years old and just love ❤ watching this woman Hazel wow what an amazing character
That is very sad. May he rest in peace.
@@eleanorsourp6311 Very sad, he was only 21 years old.
What a treat. Thanks for posting.
This made my day! I have never seen Dick Cavett so relaxed in an interview. Shirley Booth is gold!
He was drunk, that's why
@INTERNETWORK Almost certainly.. but you NEVER can be too sure.. just watch him against his other interviews.. he's clearly drunk..and I don't mean just a LITTLE drunk. .I mean drunk off his ASS!
I never could get into Hazel but she's wonderful. I just saw her in the 1966 Glass Menagerie which in many ways can be considered "definitive", in my opinion. I'd love to have an opportunity to see her and Gig Young in Harvey!!
I remember her,as Hazel.She is funny,and talented.
People think of her as Hazel, but she was one of the great stage actresses of all time in this country.
I best know Shirley Booth as the voice of Mrs. Claus in "The Year Without A Santa Claus", which was her final role ever.
Thanks Shirley Booth. You are special and a great actress.
Just saw come home little sheba awesome .but grew up with her as Hazel every day after school.
I love her in Hazel she makes my day!!
I love watching the episodes of Hazel ❤❤❤
Isn’t it funny how one of America’s great stage legends is remembered today for a mediocre sitcom? She was terrific as Hazel, but this lady was the Meryl Streep/Kathy Bates/Judi Dench of her era. Nobody was better.
I always think Shelley Winters must've learned some things from Shirley Booth. Ms. Booth was special!!!
I think Hazel holds up. She is terrific and endearing.
Mediocre? Hazel was one of my favorite series
No, not mediocre.
She only made 4 films.... and yes, that damn sitcom ruined her rep.
I absolutely love Shirley.maj
I love Shirley Booth. Loved Hazel series ❤😊 she was a good actress❤😊
What a sweet, articulate great actress.
This is great. I think this is the first interview I have ever seen Ms. Booth in. She is a hoot. Funny, while I was watching her, I kept thinking of Geraldine Page.
She's always lovely and fun, I adore her💜
Loved Hazel Joking around with Mr.B and sport.great show.
So entertaining, on film and off. Rest in Peace
Love Hazel still watching re runs 2022
I agree completely. He was an intellectual snob and an egghead.
Nothing better than "Hazel".....she was made for that part and she sure made you believe it.
I’m surprised to find the tone of voice she uses for many of her characters isn’t really the way she talks. It’s put on. Awesome
For “Hazel,” she focused her voice in her mask (front of her face), creating the nasal sound that carried so well, and grated on Mr. B’s nerves…lol. :)
What a charming lady!
