Jacob Collier trying not to boast about his stupid track count in his DAW challenge: impossible
He's so talented in musical skills, yet I can't stand any of the songs that he makes.
He have his own style for sure, thats important and bold in todays music industry. He went to the finest music schools and comes from a influential family with privileges, no wonder why this dude is joyful. But at least hes not arrogant about it.
I know exactly what you mean
Lack of creativity
Yes his music wasn't my cup of tea
its music if far to happy and cheesy for me.
16k on speakers, no wall treatment and 10 guitars, a piano, a cello and a hand pan sat their resonating every common frequency.
This is why he compensates with 1000 tracks so that they even out the resonance to a minimum, if you will. Whatever works.
This how I feel showing my Girl my 500$ studio setup covered in ash and cat hair
Quality!
He seems talented, enthusiastic, and kind of pleasant- arrrrrrrrrg - we’ll have none of that!
Yeah he’s very eccentric, apparently Americans interpret that as pretentious 🤷🏾♂️
I mean.. wow. You actually posted this 😂
Jamming with him gotta be lovely, he seems to be a really nice guy. However the music he eventually makes is horrendous. Like, surprisingly hard to listen to. Too much of everything. Zero focus. Never understood why would talent like him do this.
it’s all perspective. i think he just appreciates so many aspects and genres of music. he merges ten thousand ideas into a single song which can feel disorienting to a lot of us. he doesn’t discriminate on where his mind flows while he’s creating and never takes the simple route, but if that’s what floats his boat and his fans, he’s going to continue doing so because he’s not focused on the negativity that may surround him
"I have a song with 10000 tracks" lol
@@they_arent_human the more, the merrier mayne
@@ckwnce8282 maybe if it sounds cohesive and well put together. I heard the track and it made me more autistic.
Ate too much candy so my stummy hurts
Same comments on every even slightly negative video about him, none of them defending his utterly unlistenable music, just banal platitudes professing his supposed genius.
man all i have is fl, a half broken midi digital piano and a dream.😭 this video shows that it's about the skill, not the tools.
"I have a song with 10000 tracks" yea dude we can tell.
I don't think he's pretentious. If you ever hear him speak about the journey of an artist, he's actually very down to earth and humble. From my perspective, it seems like you're very judgmental 😅
Pretense and passion are often conflated, especially when jealousy is involved. He's clearly just a big nerd. Pretension requires clear insecurity.
he's of very high intellect
Artist?
There are different definitions of the word. It can certainly apply in regard to this person. Depends which definition you choose. Some do not at all.
It is my belief that to be an artist of any sort some pretentiousness is absolutely necessary. To assume that any other person would want your art in their life is pretensions. You are assuming/placing value or worth on yourself. Once you have been validated by others pretension is an attitude, an outwardly showiness of yourself like we see here. His setup. His clothing. The way he speaks of himself and what he does. 12:01
@@HORNGEN4 there is absolutely nothing here in this video that would show any sort of insecurity. He is certainly passionate about speaking on and about himself.
The irony is he uses $15K speakers to make unlistenable music
Yep! And the worst thing here is the untreated room with a bunch of stuff that rattles like f. It's funny, but his "studio" looks like an Arabian pawnshop :)
Agreed. His works are the musical equivalent of that one mosquito buzzing around your head when you’re trying to sleep😊
And barely treated room. This is a great point 😂🎉
@@vitaliivostrykov5173 His mixes sound fine though, a tad bright, but not terrible
Who cares though? Good point, but also, he’s very successful and has a huge fanbase who listens to him regularly. Who really decides if music is good?
Bloke wears scarf indoors. I don’t think we need to say anything else.
imagine having those awesome monitors in a room full of guitars and drums that are huge frequency resonators. Jeezuz..
They are just okay monitors in my opinion. An all analogue design like Geithain 901k which doesn't rely on trickery (i.e. DSP) for perfect phase is the better option and cheaper. And I"m pretty sure the Kii3's are inspired by the Geithain coaxial driver arrangement. Also PSI A25? I mean that speaker is probably a direct competitor to the Kii3 but all analogue. I think putting a forced AD/DA stage inside a speaker is just about the stupidest thing you can do but it is the cheapest way to make a speaker. Just my two cents man.
@@Screaming-TreesI wish I was this knowledgeable about speakers dude ❤🎉
They’re DSP speakers so designed to be used in less than ideal scenarios
The amount of fart particles on that producer chair
Probably records them too and puts them into his music.
The fact that you’re sitting there, judging somebody for the way they are just a lot about you as well.
Just went and had a listen to the trash music you're posting online. Of course you would have to say something like this. You need people to be unconditionally appreciative and loving because you're terrible at what you do.
This guy is fine. The way he presents himself and his studio might be a bit much, but it's not a big deal. To each his own. I don't think the critique of him was really deserved. But I went to school for composition, not production, so you'd probably think I'm pretentious, too. 😂
Anyways, the video wasn't all that deep, that you were reacting to, but I was enjoying alright.
He says beat because when the two pitches are almost in tune, the aliasing of the frequencies results in a low frequency "beating" ( as in LFO, as in low enough to be out of Audio Range entering rhythm range) . This is useful when tuning: when the beating disappears you are tuned. When the beating slows down: you are tuning in the right direction. Goes faster: wrong direction.
I just wrote a similar thing then no need for it after reading this, Beats are a major key! (DJ Khaled Voice)
He's a rich kid, so we should expect this tone from his room tour, ahaha
The spirit of the shelves lmao I can't with this guy
He seems like a sweet little boy genius who has never left home. I don't get the negativity. Beating of notes or waves is used in acoustics and wave propagation. He didn't call his instruments stories; he was referring to stories behind each instrument. Where did he get it? What are the memories associated with it?
I was so confused why Weaver couldn't pick up on that point about the stories behind the instruments. Some people are dumb.
@@TheValueOfN Weaver's alright, but he has a tendency to be aggressively dumb. However, I don't think he actually is. It seems like an act to appear more "down to earth". Ironically, that makes him more pretentious than Jacob is. Dude needs to snap out of that. It's wearing kind of thin,
@@TheValueOfN hater!
Weaver will buy a Temu clone of his 100k YT subs Plaque and destroy it just for the camera, while polishing the real one every morning :)
Silver spoon kids coming out in waves to defend collier lol
envious ass, dorky ass, lame ass kids coming out in waves to disparage him lol. don’t have to have to be born w silver spoon to respect the fact that he actually cares about his music, unlike you. oh, wait! i’m sure you do too! unf no one will gaf about your music as long as you’re a depressed dickhead my g
I'm a poverty stricken scumbag,(lol), but I hold no hatred against Collier simply because of the circumstance he was born in. He had as little control over that as I did. The fact is, I prefer that he's doing something creative with his evident privilege, rather than taking nosecandy, chasing after Instagram Models, and driving Buggattis, like so many born in a similar mileu do. I'm a Jazz and Funk and makes beats in those genres, but I'm not a huge fan of his music. Though I can see he has a lot skill and puts in the work to a degree very few musicians do. For this he has my respect. Pretentiousness? Not seeing it.
Tons of skill. Unlistenable music. insufferable homeschool energy.
He might sound pretentious but his talent is undeniable
his music is awful
I deny it
@@ryanbates362 what do you mean
I honestly really like how Jacob Collier talks about music, and I'm so amazed by his talent, but for how good he is, he still makes the most incredibly mid music lol
I really like genre bending music and I have a similar background to Collier in terms of classical and jazz piano performance, so I think I understand what he's going for, but for me his execution falls short, ironically by doing too much usually.
I do completely understand why people like him though. Not many people make music like him, so hes got a corner on the market for it.
He didnt say listen to beats, he said "Beads". When you listen to the same note played on two different strings, but one is slightly different it makes a "beading" sound, you have to make the Beading line up, and the strings will be in tune with eachother...
Jacob isn't pretentious at all. He's not attempting to inflate his skill or importance, he's just extremely into what he's doing.
Way off the mark here mate.
Honestly Jake seems like a really nice guy.
Yeah, you're dragging it on a lot of these takes lmao. He said trinkets when referring to his equipment, then said stories, as in... he's spent a lot of time in there and has a lot of memories. Also your take on the awards is just needlessly cynical, lol. Very few people would choose to not surround themselves with their life's achievements when given the opportunity to. If anything, as others have said, you just sound insecure and pessimistic.
This reaction vid displays Weaver's ignorance and is too judgemental for my liking. Jacob is a likeable guy who knows a shit-tonne about music theory and I'm extremely envious of his lifestyle. I don't like his music though.
Wtf is this community and why is this dude always so negative about everything. 4:26 in chat "I would love to destroy everything in that room" like wtf is this.
He seems like a fine guy, not into the rainbow outfit but he is just lost in his world - and what a decent studio for working
When two notes are very close to each other you can hear a beating as they drift in and out of cancelling and boosting... this is common when tuning a guitar
That's called faze cancellation no two things can be the same.
@@HOLLASOUNDSo really so frequency beating is not a thing? Phase cancelation 😂😂😂
2 waveforms have a beat frequency. It's the difference between two waves 550 and 380 has a beat beat frequency of 170. The Moog subsequent 37 has a knob called beat frequency 😂😂😂 in don't like Jacob as well but the fool knows his shit pretty well.
Haha, you sound a bit jealous 😂😅
he’s always jealous - that’s his entire personality lol
@@ckwnce8282haha seriously? This is the first video I’ve seen but I know who Jacob is
He's referring to beat frequencies. I think he has perfect pitch.
Those monitors though. He does have a channel , I'm pretty sure. Say what you will about his music. It's still pretty impressive imo. Overcooked, I mean. Maybe some are but there's other songs with less complexity that I've heard which i think are pretty awesome.
Its def a full studio but I'm not taking issue with the grammys, he's earned em.
For a minute I thought I was watching "This Is Spinal Tap".
I think people are a bit uncharitable to Jacob Collier because he talks about high level music concepts in a really strange and eccentric way. I don't know that I'd call him pretentious, I think he's just excited and passionate and a little eccentric/weird.
all hate is a reflection of self hate dude

@@ckwnce8282 No just stating a fact
i’m agreeing with you my guy 🤣
Wisdom is chasing him but he is running faster.
Every drone/ambient producer knew exactly what he was referring to when he said "beats" aka beating 😆
there is absolutely no way any sort of critical listening is done in the room, even having one acoustic guitar sitting in my studio drives me insane
I loved his early covers. There’s no doubt he’s incredibly talented. When Herbie Hancock and Quincy jones love him that says a lot. I don’t think his pretentious. He has his own style
2:15 i have barely heard his music but now i hate him even more
Put concrete in the desk…😂 Bro, I have one guitar in my studio and it rings when I have speakers at moderate volume. He puts concrete on desk with tons of acoustic guitars above it. 👍 great job 😂
you didnt really cook with this one my guy
I can't say I'm a fan of his music, but he doesn't seem pretentious. People just want to hate on him because he's eccentric and more importantly...he's more talented than most producers reading this. Whether or not you like his music, he's prolific and actually puts his songs out!
This was the bros sitting around hating on someone living the life they dream of.
yes, and I'm here for it
@@pwho405 nail on the fucking head bro
No matter what you like or dislike about the guy, Jacob Collier is amazingly talented.
I wonder if that room is treated well enough to even utilize those speakers. lol
Those guitars are going to really resonate.
all the acoustic guitars on the wall
he might have tons of grammys and 15k monitors but he still lives at his parent's place huehuehue
“frequency beating” is definitely a real term lmao. who do you think KNOWS more about music? Jacob or Weaver? 🤣
Exactly ❤😂🎉
@@val_de_mez you get it lol
Just say oscillations lol
@@OWESTM can’t. they are different constructs lol
I know who's music I like better and its not Jacobs
i think by "beats" he's refering to the frequencies not sounding right between each string, and therefore making a kind of "beating" against each other, it's what's used in binaural beats were you play frequencies with different harmonic series and generate other frequencies when the are interpreted in the brain.
Not a thread of pretentiousness here. The guy is passionate about his instruments, his studio and his music. He seems happy and he's enjoying his life. I like him and would be glad to have a beer with him and talk music.
You posted your entire insecurity on youtube
He's got so much stuff, he doesn't need any room treatment. I'm guessing ADHD.
Beats are the disonnance between 2 notes at the same pitch, you hear that when you tune a piano with multiple strings per note! Its a really common term
Thanks for being a hater. Makes me feel less alone.
Yes, it's called beats. Weaver clearly hasn't tuned a string instrument ever.
I've tuned many strings and never heard that term.
@@qtrax100I encountered that concept aged 4 during my first violin lesson
he looks like a theater kid from the 90s. I don't care if he's good at music, the dude is a living meme.
the discordant vs harmonious thing articulated as "Beating" is a real thing tho. Its just physics fr; if the stuff we hear as harmonic or In-tune has sorta symmetrical beating patterns, stuff *out of tune* has more asymmetrical or annoying patterns (to our ears in western or whatever context they're trained with) ... at least he's not as reactionary as rick beato
The electronic drop. Not the other one ya know. 😂
Nah he’s just a chill guy idk why people can’t stand him
ironically, i found this video to be the most pretentious video ever...not the jacob collier video. It seems you just wanted to say anything to get a video out. Most of your points dont even make any damn sense..the one about awards, espeically.
5:13 "Or do you just never take acid?"
Is the funniest thing ever in that context
But I must say that I can't fully agree, Collier may seem pretentious but I think he's actually genuine, maybe a bit weird and autistic. But he just is what he is and it doesn't seem to me like he pretends to be anything but himself: Kind of a weird guy with a lot of talent and good ears
i love how u compare youre youtube plaque with his grammys
11:02 bro doesn't blink enough
This gives "you mad bro??" vibes
Is it pretentious if you’re literally Jacob Collier? Haha.
Dude this guy seems really interesting! I love the way that he looks at the world. It's different. It's unique. He's out there for sure but look at how happy the guy is. This doesnt come off as pretentious, it comes off as inspiring to me.
Weaver would rather him be just another pop singer I guess.
I’m happy we’re on the Jacob collier hate train
Let's work the algorithm on this video boys. This could either end up really good or really bad for Weaver 😂. Collier has a passionate fanbase so shots have been fired 😅

The most convoluted description of an 8 port XLR snake
Pure jealousy, OMFG!
love Jacob, he is pleasantly obnoxious
Rhetorical question from interviewer waving his hand across the floor to ceiling clutter: "How many instruments in this room...." Star: proceeds to count them.
He is talented even if his music is not your style. He paid for all his gear by working an making people enjoy music. He got asked to show the space where he makes music because some people are interested in that. What is your story? beating down on people and calling it making content… “if I got a youtube reward for 100k I would destroy it” Me too if I got it for adding more negativity …

@@chocomalk but hey man, Weaver knows everything! 🤪

You're starting to sound like that 1eyed scaley snake, he's fine, traveling the world meeting and working with the best of the best, I'm not a fan but I love his work ethics, his talent and the joy and happiness and fun that he has put into his life, and work, he's awesome,
Jacob definitely can come across as pretentious on first impressions to us regular folk, especially because he's so casually talented and articulate with a yuppie accent, but his background explains alot. He was born into a musical family-his mum is a violinist and conductor of Chinese descent-so he grew up with music all around him. He is definitely "Rich" by my standards but he has developed next level skills that can command ridiculous fees and probably earns a mint, he went to private schools like Mill Hill and the Royal Academy of Music, but those aren’t at the absolute top tier of privilege, like Eton or Harrow, so he’s not coming from the most elite, polished background you might expect.
Here in England, attending certain private schools or boys' schools gives you a particular set of social skills, which definitely come off as entitled or aloof. But honestly, in the bigger picture, he's not as pretentious as others I've met. I've been to places like Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and have met musicians and composers who are far more "elitist" in how they present themselves. *Proper posh wankers* Jacob, by comparison, seems to genuinely love what he does and approaches music with curiosity and passion, not with the intention of making others feel inferior.
He is definitely privileged, but there’s a much higher echelon where musicians are really a next level of pretentious. Jacob’s eccentricity and the way he expresses his ideas can be misinterpreted as elitist, but in the grand scheme of things, there is a higher league of unbearable musician/composer asshole types floating around London
Well said.
I wouldn't say that he is overly pretentious (actually comes across as a nice and even enthusiastic guy), just that for someone on his intellectual level and knowledge of music, his music sounds surprisingly meaningless and boring. Could be a case of overthinking or making mathematical "correct" music - or maybe just that when "anything goes", nothing stands out anymore. Either way, his whole output combined doesn't hold water do even one single Beatles song, and i'm not even a Beatles fan.
He's not pretentious because he's not pretending. It's his mother's house so he only has one room. You should look at the BBC documentary of him to understand his background.
The shade😔 I wish I had a man cave studio like this!!!! Him keeping his awards is his accomplishments he should keep it he put in the work!!! If I had access to analog gear I wouldn’t worry about plug ins!!! 🤦🏽♂️
15:44 that was a brian wilson parody
Guy is an absolute genius and his passion for music is amazing to watch.
Do not criticise Jacob Collier. Ever. (Personally, I think he's obviously talented, but I haven't yet heard a cover or original of his that I've actually liked.)
That's criticism
You know that the idea you shouldn't criticize your leader is one of the things indicative of a cult, right?
Sorry bro but you trying to understand Jacob with a bunch of preconceived ideas sounds the same as when the likes of Rick Beato tries to understand Hip-Hop... Very judgy.
Dewey Cox…😂
Play C1 and C#1 at the same time on a simple wave on a synth and you will hear a throbbing effect. Then play C1 and D1 at the same time and compare the rate of the throbs, (or "beats"), to the C1 and C#1 throbs. That's what Jacob was talking about when he was talking about the "beats" when tuning acoustic instruments. Weaver is too quick to judge here, (and in general), and - in my opinion - should learn to demonstrate humility.
true! but currently Weaver’s more likely to win the lotto & simultaneously be struck by lightning than for him to demonstrate humility. the only thing he has a knack for rn is being judgmental
And who would watch his videos then? Yeah, humble and sweet and nice sell so very well. Oh wait, there is Jacob Collier, i take everything back, it sells extremely well apparently.

9:50 he said Appalachian mountain dulcimer. My poppops made them alot when I was a kid before he passed away. Played correctly they're beautiful
Edit: I think it may be Irish or Scottish in origin
I'd love to see someone clap in that room, looks like an acoustic nightmare xD
I think you are misunderstanding because of his British accent.. Between Weaver and Jacob I would say Weaver is far more low key pretentious+obnoxious.. It's interesting how obnoxious pretentious people point out other pretentious people.. which means something about me.. Oh no..
Those speakers are probably worth more than most people’s entire studio setup computer included. This is giving me fred again vibes. I thought the dude was a talented producer who started from the ground up, sadly he’s just a talented artist that is born into British royalty. Always makes me sad when artists try to brand themselves as starting from the ground up but always conveniently leave out how they have insanely rich parents which basically voids the entire artists journey that most artists need to go through.
Came here expecting too much from Jacob (extraness) but you actually got me to understand him much more than I did before - I think its literally an understanding issue which he probably doesn’t help himself with sometimes but hes almost like nice controversial 😂 and like pushing boundaries far beyond the norm in music. He’s very genuine as well.
I have zero clue who this dude is
