Feast of the Virgen de la Rosa and 300th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Image of the Virgen de la Rosa in the Philippines

Despite the hustle and bustle of the highly-urbanized Makati, deep within is an old town with a rich and colorful tradition to honor the triumvirate patrons, Our Lady of the Rose, and Saints Peter and Paul on their feasts held every June 29 and 30. The "Panatang Sayaw" began some time in the 19th Century. Four pairs of women clad in pink and blue dresses, led by the "capitana" perform this ritual in thanksgiving to an answered prayer or as a vow to the patrons. It is divided into three parts, the "dicho," "trono" and "awit." In the "dicho", the women chant a poem in honor of the said patrons. It is then followed by the "trono" wherein they sing a prayer song. It culminates with the "awit," a combination of singing and dancing. The "awit" is divided into two parts. The first is to honor the Virgen de la Rosa wherein the women carry arcs decorated with pinks and blues and the other one is to honor Saints Peter and Paul wherein this time they use castanets as they dance to the musical accompaniment of a brass band. It is performed after the morning procession on the feasts of the patrons.
