I have a CD of this that a friend who works in Hollywood gave me almost 15 years ago (before it was uploaded here) and yes, I know the ride well enough to know what was kept, and what was tossed from this session.
That’s what made this and K.A.R.R. so great. They were just slight variations on his everyday voice. As you can hear here when he speaks to the director: slow him down, enunciate every syllable and that’s both voices.
These recordings are 50 years old, and still in use at the various Disney theme parks in the U.S. I've never been to the parks in France or Asia so not sure if they used voices in the local languages or used Paul Frees. He was a remarkable talent, lived in Marin County near San Francisco, and way before the technology made it easy, he had a studio installed in his home with high-quality phone lines that allowed him to perform at any major studio in San Francisco, New York or Hollywood without even driving across the Golden Gate Bridge. I produced television commercials in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 80s, and while I had his demo tape in my office library, I never had occasion or the budget to book him for a job. So I never me the man, but talked to many others who had worked with him. Notice he directs himself mostly. He knew when each take was a keeper or needed to be re-recorded. He only needed time cues from the producer. If he knew he had done a perfect take, and some 20 something newbie producer tried to direct him, he simply wouldn't do it and would educate the baby producer that Take 2 was perfect and no more takes were needed. "Let's move on . . .". Conversely, if he knew he could bring something better or different to the reading, he'd gladly do another take. "The timing was good" said the producer, to which he replied "So was the reading". "Have a little more fun with it" to which he replied "Stretch it you mean?" The man knew he was good. He was also the voice of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. More information about Paul Frees can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Frees
Vincent Price voices the ghost host in Disneyland Paris then it was changed to a French voice actor that does the dub for Price's movies but was reverted back again. Tokyo Disneyland also uses a Japanese voice actor for the ghost host.
He had a perfect baritone speaking voice...amazing, how he could alter that masculine voice in many ways! He seems, in photos, to be a shorter guy...his voice does not match his visage.
I’ll never forget being that wide-eyed six year old kid visiting the Haunted Mansion for the first time in the 1970’s. Paul’s voice accompanying those creepy portraits is unforgettable. How cool is it to listen to this masterpiece being created?
finster1968, absolutely!! Frees' voice is burned into my imagination just from this one Disney attraction. Add SFX, appropriate music & stir --- man, that whole package was a masterpiece - so well done! (Even his safety precautions are harrowing --- "Muwahh-hah-hah-haaaaa...!")
Yep! When they started to stretch is when I started to really worry. Also, was six years old, and it made such an impression on me that when I heard him I started to cry when we went again at 15. :-D Now I'm a voice actor, and this is #goals
Thurl also lent his voice to a couple Disney films too. He was one of the singing cards in Alice in Wonderland, some of the singing pound dogs in Lady and the Tramp, and Captain the horse in 101 Dalmatians
He had so many roles, from his days in radio, to cartoon voices to movies (war of the worlds, St Valentines Day Massacre ect) to the 2nd incarnation of K.A.R.R. in knight rider
Especially if your a frequent watcher of the Rankin/Bass holiday specials. His voice for both Burgermeister Meister Burger and Grimsley in Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town is the most recognizable and shows off his impressive vocal range.
Paul’s voice alone sends shivers down your spine. I listened to another version of the Ghost Host. Played by the none other than the legendary Vincent Price! Both are awesome to hear.
Take 2 was great and dude in the control room had the nerve to say "he's a half second over". ! What he SHOULD have said was, GREAT TAKE, PERFECT. Let's move on to the next one.
TruthSurge no it didn’t, I know what you meant, but the final take just had IT. That intonation that makes it magical & just perfect. Like Atencio told him: “make it more breathy-like”. And wouldn’t you know it, an iconic spiel forever. The others were timed OK but didn’t have that special quality the final one does. The second one that was a second over seemed forced with a mixture of normal & forcibly deep intonations, plus unnecessary pauses between certain words. The final one, the one chosen is not only read but “acted out”. The final result was just perfection. There’s a good reason the imagineers chose that particular one. I think THIS may have zoomed over your head.
@@JOHNNYBIX38 thats because each segment has to be timed in a certain way and sometimes theu don't have wiggle room so He was not critiquing the proformace more so letting him know he may have to change the speed of his cadence if they can't use that take. @@devinaschenbrenner2683 Agreed, but by sheer luck or fate, the final take turned out to sound the best. It just flows more naturally and has the best intonation. The others, regardless of timing, sound forced and unnatural. So in the end, everything worked out for the best, the timing, the voice, the inflection. Notice how he doesn't pause between some words, like in the other two or goes from deep to a bit higher. In the final take, it all just flows perfectly, even the way he says some of the words, such as death STILL - and actually cuts off the word and shortens it to emphasize the stillness. The word DELIGHT is actually also pronounced with a joyous delightful tone. I don't know if you can understand what I'm saying, but he literally acts out each phrase and word accordingly, with just the right amount of pitch and resonance. All in all, the imagineers did a brilliant job of picking just the right takes and Paul Frees gave them great choices but it all turned out perfectly in the end.
Only Frees could bang out this ride's narration perfectly in one take. Most of the multiple takes were for slight time overages or coverage. His variety of intonations he brought to the Ghost Host couldn't be matched in the industry--and would be very difficult to parallel now.
I feel like it would be a cool idea if Disney reused some of these takes and randomly use them in parts of the ride, so like when he says “Welcome foolish mortals, to the Haunted Mansion.” Sometimes it would be ripped from a different take. I feel like it could add a little bit of life (how ironic) to him.

He also has a small part in George Pal’s War Of The Worlds. He narrates the first intro and plays the role of the reporter/historian documenting the A bomb drop.
Some Rankin-Bass villains he's voiced include Burgermeister Meisterburger in "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town", Aeon the Terrible in "Rudolph's Shiny New Year", Winterbolt in "Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July" and Kubla Kraus in "Jack Frost" (1979).

while Corey Burton does a good Paul Frees impression in HMH, I think they should have offered the job to Kelsey Grammer. the way he does "Sideshow Bob" would been an even closer Paul Frees immitation

This is great... you can also hear the voice of X Atencio, the imagineer who wrote the script for the ride, on this recording.

The song "Grim Grinning Ghosts" was sung by the inimitable Thurl Ravenscroft, who also voiced the iconic Tony the Tiger ("They're Grrrreat!")
Thurl Ravenscroft also was the vastly-superior narrator to every other one that the Disneyland Railroad has had.
