Compliments to you. I am a DR650 rider and wandered onto Lockhart while completing the TAT from Virginia. It was heat of August. Ran out of water and broke a clutch lever along with a foot and dramatic episode off a cliff. My buddy and I went from the canyon bolder area to Moab in the dark. No water so couldn’t risk waiting for daylight and sun. A taxing ordeal. Now I got a good look at what we didn’t see! You ride real well and I enjoyed the honesty. Hope to add the UTBDR to my accomplishments, but Lockhart? Nah, I’m 71 anyway.
Looks like it would be a fun place to turn my DRZ loose. You should keep protein powder and BCAAs in your bag so you can fuel and recover your muscles better while on trail
A very well done and beautiful video. About 5 years ago I did Lockhart Basin on a KLR650 and your ride brought back a lot of great memories. Last June, about a month later than your ride, I did the Utah BDR on my DR650 and found it to be one of the most challenging and most beautiful of all the BDR's ridden to date. Love your attitude, passion and drive. Hoping you will complete the Utah BDR on the next attempt. Thanks for sharing.
Loved that ride and scenery! Subscribed! I rode my DR650 on part of the BDR back in '18 and it was the best off-roading I've ever experienced, it was spectacular!
Outstanding video! Loved the commentary all the way through and cringed on those ups and downs through Lockhart. Really good choice of music and editing. I usually don't watch a video this long but just couldn't stop. Had to see it through. Those shots up in the La Sal's were gorgeous. The way you approached each challenge and how you handled them calmly and thoughtfully was amazing to watch. That snow section would of killed me quickly and you just kept going. Great video, thanks!!!
Great video! Currently planning a trip from FL out to Utah to ride the BDR in late August or early September 2023. Your video is very inspiring. Thanks for sharing. Ride on !!
You are a Hooligan on that bike! I recently purchased a DR and was just searching the BDRs and your video came up.Very well done and there is no quit in you. I have had my AT in some gnarly stuff and wondered if I was going to make it out. That's when I decided to add a DR. I picked it up from the stealership rode it home 30 miles and put it on my bike lift. That was a month ago. Still waiting on parts. I'm making this the bike what I want it to be. I won't ride like you (although I wish I could). I'm in the last of my 50s and I break easily and don't heal as fast. I prefer to ride by myself and appears you do too, so if you don't already have one you should consider getting an inReach or Spot. Might save your Hooligan ass one of these days. Safe travels
I’m thinking about getting a DR650 and you’re confirming what a great all around bike it is. I currently have a VStrom 650 (& Dirt Bikes) but that thing is about 100 lbs more than the DR when loaded up. Your commentary adds so much to the story to let us feel how “sketchy” the trail can be.
Very Cool Video, Nice riding and great effort on the snow trails. My ambitions are usually more than I am able to ride, but there's always next time. Your bike sounds and looks good. I know you liked your KLR but DR is a great bike too. I look forward to your next video.
Outstanding video and accomplishment! You have a lot to be proud of! If I could make a some suggestions. I would have taken off the mirrors at the bottom ball mount. Also, they make turn signals that you can unplug during difficult paths. Maybe some Giant Loop Coyote bags to keep weight low. Personally I would not go out there alone, bring a friend. Seriously, unless you can get a life flight to you in less than 1 hour, that would be a tough way to die. Hey man, I am probably older than your dad, and I care about you. You are an awesome young man, please take care of your self. BTW love my DR 650. Sadly there are no paths like that in Bayou country.
Normally the rough spot is the first part because usually lockhart basin is run in the opposite direction :) at least thats how we always do it in a 4x4 , never run it on a bike before. Cheers from northwest utah
I just got my DR650. Bucket list for sure... Thing I see about out west weather conditions, you never know what you'll run into at any point in the year.
Thanks for the video. Bummer you got sick at the end. Different time of year snow would have been clear and you would have conquered it. 3 summers ago I was going to be hiking with my kids in Glacier Park and got sick. I have a DR350 that I want to take on trips like this.
Been stuck in snow, been stuck in mud. Tough to get out solo! Convinced summer of 2023 should be spent on my xr doing bdr’s why the XR? No other reason than it’s what I have . ✌️thanks for this great video
I loved this video. What time of year did you do this trip? I'm hoping to come down from the east coast of Canada 🇨🇦 last week of August and 1st 3 weeks of September next year to do the Colorado and Utah BDRS clockwise on my DRZ400S.
I don't remember exactly when I did that trip? I think it was pretty early summer Spring. Maybe, I think September would be a good time to do it. You might get a little weather in Colorado, but that's. Probably the best time to year. to go. You're going to have a pretty crazy contrast. In weather coming off of the mountains and going into Southern Utah.
Just curious how much weigh and how much gear you have packed on the bike. I’m looking at these bikes and I weigh 215 and I pack about 35 pounds of gear and food for trips
I normally pack about 40 pounds to 50 pounds depending on the trip and I em About 200 Pounds. And The first thing I would say is the DR650 is not properly set up for that much weight. And if you are a human being the organism will probably not fit you well either. The DR has a fantastic motor but I wouldn't recommend getting one unless you're a very small person. I would recommend getting a bike. That's a bit bigger more suited for the weight and that's comfortable for You. From my experience the DR It's fundamentally flawed in the way that it's designed. I wasted hundreds on handlebar risers and footbag mounts and seats to try to get mine to fit well And at the end of the day I treated it in to get my Klr 650 back.
I want to do some BDR rides and stuff but I would be coming from out of state and don't want to get in any trouble because of ignorance of the laws/rules etc.are there any special permits or equipment or anything required to legally go exploring or do you just need a bike and a helmet or what?I'd hate to travel 500 miles only to be shut down because of some technicality that I wasn't aware of.been looking for info on the ins and outs of it all but haven't really came across any.we have some mediocre trails that you're supposed to have full protective gear and all kinds of crap to ride there from what I understand.a video on how to go exploring on national forest and BDR roads and all without getting in trouble would be great.
Yah that's a good question and to be Honest I don't really know that much about this subjet because in Utah you can kind of just do whatever you want I can't say the same for other States But here long as you're not on private property ore a few National forests such as zions and the arches You're pretty much free to explore and as far as gear and equipment goes that's just really up to what you think you need And I think as far as nationwide is concerned as long as you're on a bdr Should be OK If there were any exceptions I'm sure they'd be listed on the BDR websites The people who make the BDRs know what they're doing
Have you been enjoying the performance and fuel mileage of the lectron carburetor? I just got a DR650 with a dyno jetted stock carb with intake mods and full exhaust but im not super impressed by the throttle response or the fuel economy. Would you say that the lectron is worth it compared to the factory carburetor?
Unfortunately my carburetor was bad the day I got my bike so I replaced it with the lectron so I don't really have any experience with the stock carburetor so I personally couldn't tell you if the power is much better than a proper jetted carburetor and same goes for the fuel economy but what I can tell you that's the best thing about the lectron is that you never have to worry about jetting and you know that no matter where you're at it's going to be just right and so far I can confirm I live in an area with a lot of different altitudes anywhere from 4000 to about 10,000 feet I've never noticed a difference in power and the power that I have experience has been very good I can say for what I've experienced with my KLR I know it's a different bike but I think the difference is important to note my KLR had a JD jet kit that was set up specifically for my altitudes with an exhaust i even open up the airbox to help airflow and that bike ran great except when I go past 8000 feet it would just stall out randomly and the power was definitely lacking but so far no such things have happened with the lectron on my Dr
@@brandmanstorys9216 Thanks for the reply, the thing I'm most interested in is the throttle response over the cv carb and also being able to pick up a few more miles per gallon. I love the idea of not having to screw around with jets and being able to independantly tune my idle and top end with the carb still on the bike. Thanks again for the reply I'm subscribed for more.
Hey thanks for the subscription it's much appreciated I will do more testing in the future to hopefully try to answer some more of these tipes of questions
@@brandmanstorys9216 awesome you seem to be the only guy on TH-cam who's really made a video about the lectron carb on a dr650. Also did the lectron negate the use for that stupid carb breather?

i know this was ages ago but you should gear your DR down to 14/46 or 15/46 for this king of thing. Sounds like youre on stock gearing which I think is 15/42 which is way too high.
Interesting comment about "comfortable on highway". I've had two DRZ-400s and neither felt comfortable on the highway. Seems like the DRZ-400 likes 50ish MPH or less which was fine for me. Being in Utah I rode with shorts, tee shirt and sun glasses.
I Was on a dr 650 Which has a larger detoned engine whith Higher gearing Which means it will be using significantly less RPM at the same speed Despite the fact they have similar horsepower.
@@brandmanstorys9216 Yep. I did put 15/41 sprockets on one for a while and that was good for highways. Too high for trails, however, so I went back to stock.
