My grandma grew ground cherries and I used to get in trouble for eating them out of her garden...And swiping raspberries off the bush too. Memories. :-)

I started my first vegetable garden last year. I got a late start and it didn’t do as well as I hoped! I’ve got most of my fall/winter crops in now and it’s doing better. Just gotta keep trying new and different things! I live just north of you in Cumming, Joe, so I can identify with the challenges of growing in the Deep South! Great to see Canada so well represented on GGW! Wonderful garden! Had raised beds growing in Edmonton where earlier warming, and better drainage was a huge deal. I'm in love with this Nova Scotia gardening... harvesting arugula, mustard greens, kale and Italian parsley into December, along with carrots, beets and spinach. Nothing better for a winter stew. ❤️
Wow - this gives me a bit of hope! I’m going into my first spring summer here in Australia, in a sub-alpine location (2100 feet up) but with excellent soil. Just had a frost even though it’s almost summer. Great video with a terrific upbeat gardener, Niki!

Great video! Love trying to grow stuff successfully in the winter. I have her winter growing book. I wish you could find some who know how to grow sweet corn in a raised bed or the 30" wide beds that don't have wood sides. You didn't talk about her corn but it looked bad noticing it in the video. Many have bad looking corn in all the gardening videos. I have lots of space and grow 30" rows 12-15 inches apart in the rows in 5 dozen size plots. I would like to grow smaller amounts without helping pollinating. That would be some interesting video with some good fertilizing. Most don't even fertilize properly. Thanks
Ha.. my corn this year was an experimental variety which did yield, but due to our slow 2019 spring, it was a few weeks later than expected. I usually grow corn in an in-ground bed at the end of my garden where they can get 10 plus feet tall.
I grew carrots all thru the winter last year. still have some growing, although I don't think they will last much longer unless I protect them again. last year it was hay bales with a glass cover.
How do you keep root veg like carrots from rotting as the ground freezes and thaws over winter? Or are you able to dig them because the ground never really freezes?
I place a thick layer of straw over the plants-about a foot high. The insulates the ground enough so it doesn’t freeze. Then when you need to harvest, just pull back the mulch a bit and harvest what you need. I don’t know if there is a lower limit to temperature before even a think layer doesn’t fully work but this technique is used even in Nova Scotia and works there too. Ideally you would have a cold frame and sow seeds into that for extra protection. But that should not be necessary except if you’re in a very cold region.
@@ggwtv K. I'll see about testing it this winter if I can get my hands on some straw. I know our plumbing has to be at least 6 feet down to be below the hard freeze line, but if a foot of straw works that would be awesome and then I would have lots of mulch to use in the spring too.
Hi, Like the videos and content. Thanks putting these together. What are the dimensions of your raised bed area and the size of your raised beds. Really like the look and layout.
I assume a big reason for you higher bill is due to the lights and germination heat mats. You shouldn’t need to use them all year. I sow seeds all year as well but only use my lights and heat mats in the colder months.
This is probably off topic of episode but I have been looking for a specific type of rose. Dont know the name of it but it is about the size of a small saucer plate has a very sweet and robust scent and the one I saw was burgundy red. I love it but haven't been able to find it if at all possible could you tell me approximately what I might have described to you and where I might be able to get it. Thank you very much.
