I still remember witnessing my first ever plane crash on ps2 back when this game first came out. I was stuck on Cesar’s race for multiple real life days and constantly lost then when I finally won. I started driving through downtown Los Santos on my way to the donut shop to do one of tenpennys missions and as I was driving. I heard a distinct sound of the planes rotor and in a split second my car (which was already black smoke b/c I crashed a lot during the race but still managed to win) blew up and I died and I was little at the time so I remember that I actually started crying b/c I hadn’t saved and I had just lost all my guns then b4 the screen faded to black I saw the remains of the plane. I then had it happen again later in the game when I was driving from San Fierro to the desert airstrip for flight school but that time. I thankfully survived I’ve beaten this game abt 30 times now and I’ve experienced a ghost plane crash in every single one sometimes I used to see 2 or 3 during a single play session for the day.

the giant trail of fire spreading everywhere is very realistic , in real life even plane crashes without much hard impact will result in a ball of fire since theres so much fuel on a plane, and its even more flammable and messed up than gasoline

Don't know if its true but I read once that this is caused by buildings, trees, and other tall stuff spawning in front of planes? Made sense for the older versions of the game, not sure about the newer ports.
it only affects player, these NPC planes crashing were probably just some half-measure spawn mechanic that lets plane spawn in place they shoulden't be

Plane crashes are a common occurrence in GTA SA. Just like the AI peds crashing your car in GTA 5. Rockstar Games have been doing this for long.
