    Fun Fact - the Intellivision version was originally written by Atarisoft, but not completed by the time the video game crash shut them down. INTV bought the rights to their old games library including the incomplete Dig Dug. The programmer at INTV completed the game, and discovered there was just enough spare memory on the cartridge ROM to stick in a secret game. He had rewritten Tron Deadly Discs to use various graphics from Burgertime, making the characters hot dogs. That game is called Deadly Dogs! and it's activated by pushing certain numbers on both controller keypads and hit the reset button.

    Some fun facts here: The Dig Dug characters name is Taizo Hori and his son Susumu Hori is in a spinoff game called Mr. Driller which was originally to be known as Dig Dug 3 at one point.
    Dig Dug actually takes place within Namco's VERY large in-canon game universe known as U.G.S.F. (United Galaxy Space Force) which you may know from Namco's Galaxian 3 and Starblade series. Taizo Hori is part of the UGSF team that surveys planets for habitable locations, and Taizo Hori was sent to the planet in Dig Dug to eradicate the alien pests that ruled the underground world.
    Also, Taizo Hori's ex-wife was the main character in yet another Namco game called Baraduke (Also a part of the UGSF timeline). Her name is Toby "Kissy" Masuyo, and one of their sons is Susumu from Mr. Driller. (Yeah, this gets kinda deep...get it? DEEP! Cause he's digging really deep...uhh yeah. Anyways...
    Btw Mark, if you are interested in more of this Namco UGSF timeline and want to see what games are in what place within this timeline, please check here! You'll find it very interesting! (And yes, this is 100% official and created by Namco, although some games were added to the timeline retroactively.) Enjoy! ^.=.^

    ah the memories, I used to play this game after school and I was very happy when my mother bought it for me at Christmas for my atari 2600
    I do not know why but the music of this game was always my favorite even today at my 40s when I hear it it makes me feel very happy, memories of when the children were children and could go out without fear of something bad happening to them.
    That's why I love your videos, thanks for sharing.

    What surprises me most is that the Colecovision, Sord M5 and MSX versions are all entirely different and even the TI and Colecovision versions have different graphics although coming from the same company - despite these computers all having the same graphics chip, the TMS9918 (or a derivative thereof), and except for the TI they also all had the same CPU.

    The Atari 2600 is pretty great, even the background has various colors, the developers could have put just one single color on each stage or even on the entire game but nope! they did it the right way.

    You'd have expected the ZX Spectrum to get a port of Dig Dug, but no dice. Perhaps the C64 version was due to the format having a presence in the United States that the Spectrum didn't have.
    I guess the MSX version gives some indication of what a Spectrum Port may have been like, though the sound would have been much, much worse.

    Grew up on the (pirated) Apple ii port and it was simply awesome because it actually had the background music. Sound took cpu cycles, and on a 1 MHz 6502 processor background music was a treat. This is one of those things where you had to experience it st the time, and loved it playing on a monochrome green screen 🙂

    Dig Dug and Doom protagonists are usually referred to similarly as their game names (though Doom's is Doomguy).
    In Mr. Driller series and Namco × Capcom, Dig Dug is named Taizo Hori; however, some of the most recent Mr. Driller games called him "Hero of the Dig Dug/South Island Incident", but in the PC remake Dig Dug Deeper, he went back to being called Dig Dug again. For Doomguy, his version in the Doom novels roughly based on the classic games gave the marine the name of Flynn Taggart. This name was re-used in the famous Call of Duty series, where the main character was just called "Taggart" for short. In the Doom movie, the name of the protagonist is John Grimm, nicknamed Reaper.
    Japanese game company Universal (now Aruze) later modeled Mr. Do! after Dig Dug, but with some differences.
    Both Dig Dug and Mr. Do! series earned some sequels, which you RetroCore might want to see if there are enough ports for them, too. Satoshi Tajiri demonstrated the first 4 Mr. Do! games. There's also Neo Mr. Do! for Neo-Geo.

    Did Namco actually had that many arcade to Famicom ports that could be considered bad? To me, all of their early arcade hits were spot on on the Famicom. Pac-Man, Dig-Dug, Galaxian and Galaga, Battle City, Mappy - all done very nicely, on par with Nintendo's own games.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pacland is probably the worst. I do think that Namco could have done better with a few of there arcade to Famicom ports. maybe saying most were awful wasn't strictly right.

  • @amerigocosta7452
    @amerigocosta7452 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I don't think the C64 version is that bad, but I have to admit I play it on the emulator set to NTSC rather than on my real C64 wich is a PAL machine. For extra speed and slightly less squashed graphics. I think it's fair since this version was made in NTSC land and not with PAL in mind.

    • @RetroCore

    PSP version has the original (can arrange the screen for better play)

    GBA has a version too in Namco museum, has a poor sound (hardware)

    Dig Dug, a great arcade game at the time which I still consider pretty fun! Now I wish the ColecoVision port was finished because it probably been very fun. I do believe Atari thought it was better than the Atari 5200 port which doesn't look too bad. But looked worse by comparison to them so yeah that could of been cool to see it finished. Also with the speed problem with one of the ports, I'm sure that it wasn't supposed to run that fast because I watched another video from another channel that compared Dig Dug and it ran fast but not as fast as it went for you, what I believe it could of been is just a emulation issue because I know 4 MHz isn't the fastest in the world so maybe a emulation issue, I don't know but something went wrong there though. Anyway, good video!

  • @AthleticDesign

    Vic 20 version and 7800 version are both excellent, though I guess the NES have the 8-bit edge. C64 in NTSC mode would be a contender too.

  • @ShanetheFreestyler
    @ShanetheFreestyler หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think part of the reason the Apple ][ version sounds and plays the way it does is because it takes all the CPU to drive the beeper, hence why it stutters the way it does, it's switching between the sound and updating the screen. If I'm not mistaken, the 48K ZX Spectrum was the same way. Most Speccy games, if they had music at all, had it only on the title screen. Had there been a Speccy port, it probably would've sounded like this, but maybe a bit faster due to having a faster CPU: Apple ][ having a 1.023 MHz 6502 vs the ZX Spectrum's 3.5 MHz Z80. Surely that'd be enough grunt to drive both the game and the sound while still running at a decent speed.

  • @JimLeonard
    @JimLeonard 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    C64 version is slow and squashed because you're playing the NTSC version in PAL mode. Also, the "MS-DOS" port was a PC port (it didn't use dos, you were playing the pirated crack). In the PC port, keypad "5" stops you moving (look at an old IBM PC keyboard to understand why).

  • @johnsimon8457
    @johnsimon8457 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The arcade's vertical resolution (admittedly just a screen on its side) is just something you don't get. Every version either has a reduced playfield or has to scroll.

    Funny trivia: His real name is "Taizō Hori", and was once married to Toby "Kissy" Masuyo of later arcade game "Baraduke" (apparently, it is official Namco canon that they divorced). Amongst their kids during marraige were Susumu and Ataru Hori and Taiyo Toby from thr "Mr. Driller" series.
    Vidyagaems is wierd, mate. Also, like many vertical games featured on the six-disc Namco Museum series (or five for at least those of us in North America) for PS1, this has the option of enabling TATE mode to avoid the vertical scrolling.

    • @NightSprinter
      @NightSprinter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, chalk the whole thing about Hori, Masuyo, and their kids to the following:
      Mr. Driller (actually mentions Taizou is his dad, and later games even mention the same about their siblings),
      Namco X Capcom (yes, took me a while to learn it was pronounced "cross".. titles are weird.), story has both Hori and Masuyo, and it gives insight as to why the latter no longer likes the former. Seriously wish licensing BS didn't keep the game Japan-Exclusive..

      @NightSprinter 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, for games like the Mr. Driller series and "Dig-Dug: Digging Strike" (ha, i c wut u did thar, Namco!), it's all really from just reading the instructions. I didn't know the whole deal about Masuyo and Hori until reading up a walkthrough of NxC while watching someone's playthrough vids of it. I do think NxC does provide some backstory info on characters in an extras gallery of some sort.

But it worked in the end.

  • @ryzmaker11

    lol, Dig Dug, we had lot of fun playing this game back then with my brother and my cousins. Might have been the Apple II version though which apparently is not so good but we didn't even know, it was AGES ago and this game was sort of a private joke among us :D
    And actually I never played it again since but I should give it a more serious go now, I like these early arcade games.
    Also, thinking about it, this game should have been ported to the Game Gear, it would have been perfectly suited for Sega's handheld but a port better designed than the Game Boy one, with smaller sprites in order to keep the full area visible at any time and this + the color graphics, this could have been nice. If I'm not mistaken, Mappy, another Namco game, is pretty good on Game Gear.

    • @RetroCore

  • @AmyraCarter
    @AmyraCarter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    (before video) I love this game. One of my favorites from the arcade. :)
    0:16 Twenty ports?? ... damn... lolz (twenty-one including the arcade)
    2:00 I've gotten that far one time. Once. I spent six bucks in credits to get that far. I don't think anyone has beaten the high score on that machine since, unless of course, the machine was reset...
    3:58 Yeah. I hear that.
    8:00 :| Ew. Chunky. 8:56 I saw that. That's a really bad glitch...
    11:18 Okay, this is way worse than Apple ][, graphically. :|
    12:12 MS-DOS got this??? ...I've nothing to say.
    13:28 For the Coleco, it looks great, but's with the flashing sprites? It looks...odd... o.o
    15:02 Yeah, that's running too fast. Might be why the controls aren't working.
    17:14 (looks up Casio PV-1000) Huh. Looks like a calculator screen.
    19:54 Black boxes around characters reminds me of how games were developed for the Commodore Personal Electronic Transcoder, or PET, lolz
    20:26 If there's one thing the N64 never did that well with, it was pixelated images like this. The GPU was a bit too powerful for something as rudimentary, but for a game like Dig Dug, it's not a bad thing, however, there are games from this era that are damn near unplayable with the GPU's shortcomings, such as the Rally-X series. (ugh)
    21:16 Unnn... I could say so many things but this...this...is just a waste of tech. This is worse than playing a bad port of an arcade game on TIGER ELECTRONICS. Oh, wait... this was ported to those too..... :(
    I only ever played this in the arcade, and the Namco Museum ports. The GBA version of this game runs the N64 port, and it actually looks better because of the smaller screen. I used to be good at this game.
