One of my favorite behind the scenes stories about this movie is that, in the scene where the alien bursts out of John Hurt's chest, the director Ridley Scott didn't tell the other actors precisely what was happening. The script just said that "something emerges" but, than Hurt, the other actors had no idea they were about to get literally sprayed with gore and such to help make their shock more authentic when it happened.
That's not really how it happened. The scene is described in some detail in the script, so they knew the Alien was coming out of his chest. What they didn't know was exactly how the effect would be achieved, since no one had tried something like it before. They got to the part where they got Kane on the table, then all the actors were told to break for lunch, except John Hurt, since he needed to be glued into the effects rig. Tom Skerritt also stuck around to watch the effects guys get set up, so he knew a bit more about how it was going to work, but even he didn't fully understand what they were about to see. When the rest of the cast came back, all the crew were in raincoats and all the equipment was draped in plastic, and there were barrels of blood and guts from a local butcher shop around, so everyone kind of knew what to expect, but not really. Veronica Cartwright was told "you'll get a little blood on you," but had the misfortune to stand right in the path of one of the blood tubes, so something like a full liter went right at her, most hitting her square in the eye, so her horrified "Oh, God!" was very authentic. In short, yes the cast did know what was going to happen, but not precisely what it would look like or how it would be achieved. The scene was so radically new, so different from anything that had been filmed before, that everyone, cast and audiences, reacted to it as if it was real.

THE scariest movie I ever saw in the theater. That scene at the table! Terrifying. You were great, as always. Congratulations on getting through it. Happy Halloween!
this movie works so well because it doesn't focus on the creature. it's about the fear of the unknown. to me that's what puts this movie up on all sequels including predator. On a big ship with many dark corridors . Most of the movie is the anticipation of what will happen. the lost art of creating atmosphere putting people in vulnerable situations makes for great horror. the creature is just the icing on the cake
Every 5 mins... "turn a light on?".... "turn on a light will you?" 🤣🤣... Your pure innocence is refreshing in this world, I was genuinely worried for you when I saw the thumbnail lol. Looking forward to ALIENS. You will love it, I promise. Different vibe. 👍
Let's give Addie a round of applause for surviving Alien (1979). 👏👏 Nice reaction, BTW. This is actually your best reaction since The Dark Knight (2008), especially with that Addie scream, at 15:46, when the Xenomorph kills Dallas. Alien is one of my favorite sci-fi horror films. I first heard of this movie after going on the former Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. And yes, Xenomorphs are terrifying, and yes, chestbursters slither like snakes, which you don't like. I can also agree with you that this Ridley Scott movie was very well done indeed, especially with Derek Vanlint's cinematography in Panavision (anamorphic).
Fun fact, this film is directed by Ridley Scott, the older brother of Tony Scott, the director of Top Gun (1986), which also stars Tom Skeritt (Viper). Kane is played by the late John Hurt (Ollivander in Harry Potter). And my favorite shot in the movie is at 5:22, when Kane is lowered down, while exploring Acheron (LV-426), because of the anamorphic lens flare that emits from his flashlight, because of the movie's Panavision.
Hey Addie! Super excited to see that you enjoyed Alien! This is my favorite science fiction film. The set design, the brilliant lighting, and the sound design all combine to create an atmosphere that never lets up. I saw this when I was in my early teens (maybe about 13?), and it scared the crap out me the first time. It constantly builds tension and dread like very few other horror films do. It's interesting that you commented on the age of this film, I agree, it is still very effective. Beautiful movie, great reaction!
This is one of the greatest Sci Fi horror movies ever made. It is still one of the most tense movies to watch beginning to end. You really do need to watch Aliens. It’s one of the few sequels ever made that rivals the first movie. James Cameron did an amazing job picking up where Ridley Scott left off.
John Hurt was an excellent actor. He also did the voice of "The dragon" on the excellent British TV show "Merlin" that I recommend. If you have kids/teens, it is family friendly. He had a part as "the war Doctor" on Doctor Who.
Ok Addie, I just discovered your channel, and you talked me into it. Your reactions are GOLD! 😅👍🏻 I just HAVE to watch the full length reactions. I look forward to watching them all on your patreon.
I was 15 when this came out. I had to step out the last 12 minutes or so. I had reached my scare threshold. Ripley running back and forth the siren alarms and strobing light. Right after I stepped out a lady came out on a mad beeline to the women's rest room. I wouldn't see the whole movie until I was about 24. Like 1985/86 I finally watched the whole thing. One of the most terrifying films to close out the 1970's. You did great though. Great reaction Addie. There isn't much music in this film as that's how Ridley Scott planned it. He relied on natural sounds to convey suspense and low light level, the corridors. This gives a claustrophobic atmosphere. Also he showed just enough of the alien to make it terrifying. Xenomorphs molt and when they do they grow fast. Especially this xenomorph.
It may be that you're kinda tired of hearing this, but your Reaction podcasts are wonderful to watch. It is amazing to see how empathetically engaged you become. Also, the more low-key character of the podcasts is attractive. Your quiet, humorous asides such as : "... friendly neighborhood alien?.." ; "I just had an alien attached to my face." ; "This isn't necessarily a jump scare, it's a slow scare." ; " 'Mother' is not being helpful right now.", "I also wouldn't want to be half naked while dealing with an alien, but that's just me!", and the like, make for fun, entertaining, and enjoyable Reaction videos. Many thanks and many Blessings to you. Peace and Joy, good health, Blessings and Grace to you and to all of your family and friends from Santa Fe, NM.
I watched this movie when I was 10 years old, it was on TV, it traumatized me, till today, and I'm fascinated by it. It is one of the true science fiction masterpieces in history.
The late John Hurt redid the famous "chest eruption" scene later in Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs" for laughs. Brilliant actor ("I Claudius", many other credits). But he'll be remembered for that one rather-nauseating sequence.
Girl you have got some balls, I saw this at the movies and whole rows jumped, screamed and ducked, a few even left. You have no love of horror movies and you still watched this: wow... Respect from Down Under.
Harry Dean Stanton is also memorable in The Green Mile, The Fire Down Below, and The Avengers. John Hurt(the face-hugger victim) stars in The Elephant Man and Hellboy.
Your reaction was perfect. Well done and thanks for sharing your vularability with us. I saw the film in 1979 in the theater and what an experience. It still looks good even after 40+ years.
What a great reaction video. When you jumped when the computer turned on I knew you were in for a ride. Aliens is one on the greatest movies ever, more action than scary but you decide. Great video
You survived! We're proud of you. Just a note: You mentioned CGI, but consider that the lack of CGI in this movie made it scarier. The ship was a model, the interiors were real sets, and the creatures were real creatures. No CGI. Enjoy your reactions always.
Congrats, Addie! "Alien" is about as scary as movies get. "Aliens," though, is more of an action / adventure film, maybe slightly more intense than "Terminator" or "Terminator 2," so you should be fine with it. For a change of pace, you can try "V For Vendetta." It's a thoughtful action film based on a comic book. It has excellent dialogue and acting, and a memorable story.
The movie that made Sigourney Weaver an icon. She and Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor are top tier action women. Amusing that Michael Biehn has played the love interest of both.
The original script for _Alien_ didn't give the characters genders; you'll notice only last names are used in the dialogue. Ripley is a great character not because she's a woman, but because she's the most practical and sensible character in the film, and we root for her because she's been right all along, and deserves to survive. Sarah Connor, on the other hand, we root for because of the burden she carries. She knows the future and doubtlessly realizes she won't be there, so prepares her son for it as best she can while she can, dedicating her life to that purpose. Her decisions aren't always the best, but she perseveres.
I had a little laugh to myself when I saw the thumbnail on my homepage for this one. :) I think it says a lot about how the story emerges that you managed to get through it the way you did. It's such a good movie!
My favourite movie series of all time. I have watched the complete series like 8-10 times in last 5 years. Love it, take you in another dimension of horror, scientific developments and cruelty.
Alien - funhouse. Most of the time you're jumping at shadows and your own imagination. But sometimes... sometimes something really does jump out at you. And then you're out the door... though for a few seconds you're still not absolutely sure the experience is over. Aliens - roller coaster. You start out with that long build-up to what you KNOW is coming and then whoosh - you're in to the action. Fear and thrills and action and adrenaline and there's no question that the slow bits are setting you up for the next drop and more action and adrenaline. And then it's over. You're climbing out of your seat - heart pounding. They absolutely both should be viewed.
Finally! I've been waiting for this one! Great job Addie! You should definitely watch the next one, Aliens as you correctly surmised. That one is more action than horror. Keep up the great work.
I bet you would have been fun to go see this movie with when it came out originally in theaters... LOL. During preproduction, the studio offered many suggestions to the writing and directing team. All of them were rejected...except one: Making Ash a robot. One idea that some of the team came up with, that luckily got rejected, was a different ending: Ripley gets killed by the alien in the escape shuttle, the alien climbs into the pilot's seat and then makes a distress call...in Captain Dallas' voice! The sequel to this movie, Aliens, is considered by many to be one of the best sequels of all time. And I agree with them. They are different kinds of movies but both excellent in their own ways. This one is a slow burn, atmospheric sci-fi horror whereas the sequel is more of a straight up action suspense movie with horror elements. Both five star movies though.
Alien is amazing. One of the key parts is the design of the adult Alien by HR Giger. One of the two writers, Dan O'Bannon, had started work on Jodorowsky's failed Dune adaptation, and met HR Giger on that production. O'Bannon recommend Giger's art book to Ridley Scott, director of Alien, who saw one of Giger's paintings and knew THAT was the Alien. Giger modified the design slightly, but created a creature that is just unsettling to look at, terrifying and grotesque but also beautiful. Then there's the way Ridley shot the Alien. He didn't want to make a movie about a "man in a suit," and so carefully and deliberately decides what he's going to show you, and it's never much. This had led to a popular myth that the Alien is different in every shot, continually growing larger through the film, or both. That's not true, only one Alien costume was made and, for the most part, only one actor wore it. But Ridley never really lets you get a good look at it, and draws your focus to different parts of it each time, so it always looks new and mysterious. But what an example of what a film's reputation can do, terrifying our reactor before it even properly starts, just on its reputation as one of the greatest sci-fi horror films of all time. And then it goes on to actually live up to that reputation.
Incredible video Addie. Alien is a truly phenomenal and amazing movie. And the xenomorph(alien), basically use hosts to reproduce. As always stay amazing
Don't feel bad. This movie scared the world when it came out. I saw it in the 80s on VHS when I was 6 years old and even though it was cut for TV, it left me shaking...well done Ridley..
"That jump scare really got me." - Addie after pretty much every jump scare. You are not built for jump scares. :) Like the second Terminator, Aliens is as good or even better.
Alien is one of the greatest films of all time; regardless of genre. I’ve written several pieces on the design of Alien. Had Dan O’Bannon & Ridley Scott not found HR Giger’s book ‘Necronomicon’, who knows what we could’ve ended up with. Scott was familiar with Giger’s work due to him being hired to work on Scott’s failed adaptation of Dune. Nothing will beat the time I got to see a special 70mm IMAX print of Alien…it looks absolutely stunning!! Fun Facts: The scene where Parker & Lambert die was originally much longer & Veronica Cartwright has even stated in interviews that what you see is a lot different. Basically, if you notice, as the tail goes between Lamberts legs, it isn’t actually Lambert; her costume featured cowboy boots…& the feet we see are actually Brett’s. Also, there’s a little know cut of the film that features Ripley finding Parker dead & Lambert naked from the waist down, suspended. Cartwright went on record & said that she spent part of the shoot suspended in a harness; but the scene was cut down to what we see in the theatrical cut. The Nostromo set was all connected; as it would’ve been had the craft been real. That combined with the fact it had a really low ceiling helps add to the hot, claustrophobic atmosphere & this helped drive the performance’s. Please ensure you watch the directors cut of Aliens & then onto the Assembly Cut of Alien 3. There’s not much to say about Aliens other than it’s just about perfect. Alien 3 however is something of a flawed masterpiece. It was David Fincher’s directorial debut & due to studio meddling, rewrites etc, we were left with a semi coherent film that to this day Fincher refuses to talk about. The assembly cut, fixes a lot of problems & several cast members returned to record enhanced dialogue for the reintroduced scenes. Alien 3 still divides fans due to its bleak, post apocalyptic look. But it’s the perfect ending to an excellent trilogy of films. Fun Fact: The Nostromo model was restored a few years back & sold at auction to a certain NZ director for $500’000!!!
This is such a great film. It's a masterclass in restraint. You keep thinking "oh this is it" but it isn't it. It keeps building. It keeps getting worse. The anxiety keeps ratcheting up. And the further in you get the faster it goes. Brilliant visual effects. Great writing. Incredible sets. Sound design is incredible. The jump scares are overused purely to desensitize you to them so when the real scary one hits you aren't prepared for it. It's so good. Iconic creature design as well. The Xenomorphs are the stuff of nightmares. And even if things after the sequel aren't as good, they aren't horrible. They're still worth watching.
I saw this when I was like 12 as a teen growing up in Australia. It scared the crap out of me and it still does some 40 years later. A masterpiece in restraint sci-fi horror . It doesn't reveal the whole creature and just lets you guess the whole way through. Great practical , lighting , sound effects ,a modern classic. Glad you liked it , so did I, bye bye !
Xenomorph life cycle : Queen lays eggs (those big "blooming" things the crew was snooping at) ; Eggs hatch those "face-hugger" things. They find suitable hosts and insert the Xenomorph "embryo" into the host ; Xenomorph incubates, and "hatches" by busting out of the host, killing it. Occasionally, a face-hugger will implant another "queen" embryo (this is addressed in the 3rd Alien film). The Xenomorphs can take on a variety of appearances, usually based on the host, acquiring the physiological attributes, which is why these particular Xenos have human-like proportions.
Best thing about that chest burst scene, only the director, the actor, and the crew knew what was coming. The rest of the cast knew that Kane was going to go into convulsions on the table, but non of them were told about the exploding blood packs taped to his chest. Ridley Scott wanted a genuine reaction from the cast with this scene. That actress slipping on the fake blood, that was real. Everyone's reactions to the first blood packs exploding, that was real. Its one of the best scenes in cinema
Who would of thought that the great director Ridley Scott is a master of suspense too. Great choice, great reaction, you, gorgeous and funny as always 👍🏻😎.
Well done for putting yourself through it! And how about that amazing cast? I was too young to see Alien when it first came out, but I vividly remember my first experience seeing John Hurt playing Caligula in I Claudius, so after that I expected to be scared by anything starring John Hurt - and I wasn't disappointed.
I think the reason that Alien is still a scary movie even after all this time,is because, unlike modern movies, when you see the Alien, it's Really there. Not just soulless CGI.
Bilbo (Ash) from LOTR and Ollivander the wandmaker (Kane) from Harry Potter in their younger days both in the same movie. 20 years before those iconic roles. I was 18 when this came out and had most people had no idea who Sigourney Weaver was. I had seen Yaphet Koto, Veronica Cartwright and Harry Dean Stanton in a few things but the others were new finds for me.
When I first watched this as a kid I knew just how special it was when they found the navigator on the alien ship. It was SPECTACULAR! Growing out of a ‘chair’ seated in an immense astronomical telescope-like device… and HUGE. Alien opened my mind to just how fantastic the unknown might be.
Addie, great reaction, you should react to The Fifth Element, it is not a scary movie, it is an amazing Sci-Fi action comedy film, also with Ian Holm in it, also has Cris Tucker and Bruce Willis

this movie works so well because it doesn't focus on the creature. it's about the fear of the unknown. to me that's what puts this movie up on all sequels including predator.
👏🏻👏🏻
Addie must have watched the theatrical cut. We who watched the extended cut know Ripley finds Dallas barely alive, cocooned.
Your courage is an inspiration to us all Addie, because this is a legitimately scary movie (for people who still get still get scared by movies). 👍
Now watch - as I'm sure others have already mentioned - "Aliens" because it's SO good. More action thriller than horror and just great.
2 minutes in and i'm already laughing at your jumpscare about a door opening !! Love it !!
I see it again and again, even people who can't stand horror, thrillers, and scary movies have to admit that this is an incredible movie.
Great reaction. Saw this in 1979 in theater. Entire audience freaked when face hugger burst out!
"I say we abandon the ship."
Addie: "I'm down with that."
🤣 🤣
"I say we take off and nuke the sight from orbit"
Oops, wrong movie 😁
John Hurt was an excellent actor.
He also did the voice of "The dragon" on the excellent British TV show "Merlin" that I recommend.
If you have kids/teens, it is family friendly.
He had a part as "the war Doctor" on Doctor Who.
I saw it in the theatre in '79 when I was 18 - the sound at the beginning was deafening. Certain things were very, um, impactful seen the first time.
Yes! You survived!!!! Congratulations Addie!!!!!!!
The last 10 minutes of this movie, from the destruct sequence onward, are some of the most tense 10 minutes in cinema history in my opinion.
The Thing is another example of awesome practical effects. Same for The Predator. Early Star Wars etc.
Addie you’re a champ for putting yourself through a genre you don’t like!
"I don't think you can trust an alien in any Weapons Division."
You got a spit-take out of me on that one, Darlin'. Best. Mike.
It may be that you're kinda tired of hearing this, but your Reaction podcasts are wonderful to watch.
It is amazing to see how empathetically engaged you become.
Also, the more low-key character of the podcasts is attractive.
Your quiet, humorous asides such as :
"... friendly neighborhood alien?.." ; "I just had an alien attached to my face." ; "This isn't necessarily a jump scare, it's a slow scare." ; " 'Mother' is not being helpful right now.", "I also wouldn't want to be half naked while dealing with an alien, but that's just me!", and the like, make for fun, entertaining, and enjoyable Reaction videos.
Oh yeah and quote of the review was ...'mother's not being very helpful right now"... 🤣🤣🤣... brilliant.
The late John Hurt redid the famous "chest eruption" scene later in Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs" for laughs. Brilliant actor ("I Claudius", many other credits). But he'll be remembered for that one rather-nauseating sequence.
My uncle was the lighting director on this movie and it was the first of his Oscar nominations
Both in movies directed by James Cameron.
He also cast Janette Goldstein in Aliens and T2, and of course Bill Paxton in Aliens and T1.
And he died in both
@@BubbaCoop And also Lance Henriksen is in The Terminator and Aliens. :)
@@MorbidCrow666 Michael Biehn's character survived _Aliens._
15:45 Alien: "Free hugs!"
The best movie in history. It is the perfect organism.
I´m still scared and feel nervous when I rewatch today, you did it great! Love your reactions!
the monster that has been scaring people for decades! the woman who kicked his ass and became the undisputed queen of action fiction!
A true classic, a simple concept executed brilliantly.
I had a little laugh to myself when I saw the thumbnail on my homepage for this one. :)
I think it says a lot about how the story emerges that you managed to get through it the way you did. It's such a good movie!
My favourite movie series of all time. I have watched the complete series like 8-10 times in last 5 years. Love it, take you in another dimension of horror, scientific developments and cruelty.
Addie should win the Oscar for Best Supporting Screaming . . . great reaction.
Aliens is one of my favorite sci-fi films, you won’t be disappointed!!!
13:52 thats what she said
13:49 The cat watching the kill - "Hmm. How 'bout that? Well, you're gonna get that, I guess"
Incredible video Addie. Alien is a truly phenomenal and amazing movie. And the xenomorph(alien), basically use hosts to reproduce. As always stay amazing
Thank you for this!
Captain Hollister from Red Dwarf had a small part in the sequel Aliens
Proud of you, for reacting to Alien, Addie! Thoroughly enjoyed your video, and kind words! "Aliens" is an awsome continuation of this film.
Xenomorph life cycle :
Queen lays eggs (those big "blooming" things the crew was snooping at) ;
Eggs hatch those "face-hugger" things. They find suitable hosts and insert the Xenomorph "embryo" into the host ;
Xenomorph incubates, and "hatches" by busting out of the host, killing it.
This was filmed in London and they borrowed the blue lasers (shown in the egg scene) from the rock group 'The Who' who were recording next door.
Alien meets Die Hard = Aliens!!!! A cracking movie!!!!!! :)
Ash laser cutting the face-hugger scene: "...just below the knuckle, there." Addie: "I don't think the alien will be happy with that." =X-D
Alien and aliens are 2 of my favorites I've watched them hundreds of times . ♥️
I just wanted to tell you that this is the best movie ever made.
Dallas: "I don't trust anybody"
Addie: "That's a good rule to apply to life"
😁
FYI, your role as Maria in "Sound of Music" in the theater is in the TH-cam recommendations. Hope it was fun.
TH-cam is really good at reminding me why I watch movies by myself.
When I first watched this as a kid I knew just how special it was when they found the navigator on the alien ship. It was SPECTACULAR! Growing out of a ‘chair’ seated in an immense astronomical telescope-like device… and HUGE. Alien opened my mind to just how fantastic the unknown might be.
thanks for your kindness
Addie, great reaction, you should react to The Fifth Element, it is not a scary movie, it is an amazing Sci-Fi action comedy film, also with Ian Holm in it, also has Cris Tucker and Bruce Willis
Amazing when you know this was low-budget, even by the standard of the times - good writing, great actors, and the effect department super-skilled. An all=-time classic, so glad yo watched it - wait until you see Aliens..."This time, Its War!"
Then you get to some of the Dark Horse Comics _Aliens_ stories. This time, it’s… even more war! 😄
Addie, you would be awesome to hang with and watch scary movies. Kudos to you for expanding your horizons with movie watching. A lot of people wouldn't even try.
Great reaction to my favorite movie of all time! Alien proves that modern CGI and special effects are not necessary to make a terrifying horror film!
