    The fact that lenses like this even exist is absolutely incredible, and a strong testament to just how spoiled we are as creatives nowadays.

    Great review. I got mine the other day. Personally I think the images you can get out of this lens are gonna be fantastic. Also, thank you for posting some footage that wasn’t of leaves, trees, flowers, kids or the shooters girlfriend 😆😆😆

      @garrettsammons  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Glad you like it man! I think the pros far outweigh any quirks it has. Especially at the price point! I honestly hate “test” shoots. I always prefer to see a use-case I actually would do!

      @@garrettsammons I’m looking forward to trying it out on a shoot. I’m like you, when it comes to shooting anamorphic I don’t care about the gimmicky stuff like lens flares and such, unless I’m shooting a music video. I just think there’s a quality to anamorphics that looks so much more cinematic. Also I love the softness they bring without having to use a promist or a net filter.

    • @garrettsammons
      @garrettsammons  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The softness is honestly one of the keys. That’s also why I ended up cine-modding a vintage Leica set. The characteristics of vintage photo lenses and anamorphic cinema lenses create incredible visuals.

    I have this lens. It's amazing. The nitpicks are totally outweighed by what you are capable of doing with it. I actually think the squeeze imperfections add character. You don't shoot anamorphic for clean precise images anyway.

  • @mitchellbrinkerdp
    @mitchellbrinkerdp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wouldn’t count the first point of “sensor” coverage as a con. Historically, anamorphic lenses with a 1.8x-2x anamorphic coefficient have always been meant for a 4:3 image plane. That’s the standard aspect ratio of 35mm 4-perf (1:33:1) which is what anamorphic was used on. They started to create lenses with narrower coefficients for the purpose of being useable on 16:9 sensors because that’s what digital sensors used to primarily be. For instance, the new Atlas Mercury lenses have a coefficient of 1.5x allowing for a 2:6:1 image on a 16:9 sensor when desqueezed. Anyway, I wouldn’t say that “image coverage” is the problem… or a problem. People should just be knowledgeable on the glass they are using. Good stuff. Cheers!

  • @halsinden
    @halsinden 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    really very intrigued by this. i have SO many vintage projection scope / prime taking lens combos and the ease of a single lens solution (especially a SET!) is massively attractive. the sirui stuff just seems to clinical for me and nowhere near the squeeze factor i prefer. what i'm interested to know is what these great joy full frames are like with quite heavy diffusion filters on them (i tend to go for quite a heavily affected / abstract feel).

    Good job. Keeping it low key and practical.

  • @Sodacake
    @Sodacake 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That distortion issue is a nonstarter. Like, people want the character and weirdness of an anamorphic. If you want a flawless image, don't get an anamorphic lens. Use a spherical one.

    • @garrettsammons
      @garrettsammons  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! I think a reason for it is having to explain more technical details when you get that specific. Sensor coverage / crop factor, color science and rendering, luma quality and dynamic range… people could easily attribute camera function to lens characteristics. Just my opinion, but I always try to mention these when I do lens reviews.

    The images from these lenses looks fantastic, but I can't get over the changing de-squeeze factor. That's not a small consideration for post when any shot less than 4 meters has to change the de-squeeze factor. If you ever want to be precise then you need to take intricate notes on set about your distance and then make sure your colorist follows them. Otherwise you can wing it. Except what if you subject goes from 8 meters to 1 meter? That actually happens a lot in movies, so I guess you'll be having to keyframe you de-squeeze. For the price, definitely cool to play with, but this is a serious consideration if anyone hopes to bring these lenses into a larger production.
