I am not a pianist, but I hope to say how much I love Chopin. I appreciate the comments written by the knowledgeable viewers here. I grew up listening to the classical music. So, for me to watch Greg’s analysis, it enriches my appreciation of the pieces I have listened before. And, I always look forward to the new analysis that is given to us, viewers, with the intelligence and enthusiasm. Yes, I do Love his playing, specially after watching his analysis, imagining what he must be feeling and showing his understanding of the music. Thank you.
This is the first Nocturne that I ever practiced, and I love it. Probably the less known and played of all the Nocturnes, maybe for that reason of not beeing so famous I find this one of the hardests to see in a good interpretation in my opinion.

I could watch your fascinating anaylsis all day long. I dont know for sure what comes across more - your obvious love and appreciation of Chopins music, or your superb technical ability. I know one thing for sure - that is, I discovered Chopins Nocturnes roughly 10 years ago and he is a large part of my life and always will be. Going to request this particular nocturne at my funeral, although Im not planning on going anywhere just yet. I feel sad for all the many people out there that have not yet discovered Chopin.

The left hand by omitting the 3rd really sonds like the op. 7 no. 2 mazurka, but this simplicity of the left hand helps to build up the drama
in the melody in my opinion. When you played the religioso part, I could hear a church organ in my head.

I love your playing and lectures, they are excellent and you have such great insight to share. I am a student of piano (relatively new - intermediate amateur adult) and I don't have a lot of knowledge about music and wondered if you could help me with a question I have regarding this nocturne :- Are the bars 69 to 84 a means of passing through to the last section (religioso) or are they a part of the previous section of melody? (Because I think they are quite dissonant unlike the rest of the piece)

These bars in my opinion are definitely a part of the previous section. Because the main motive (short,.short, long, long) is taken from the very first theme and is the main motive of part A.
In this Nocturne part B is something else, probably a scene at the cemetery.

Definitely with pedal but only to make perfect legato
I have fond memories of Op. 15, No. 3 because this is one of the first Chopin nocturnes I learned to play. (I first studied it when I was 15 years old.) What I find interesting is that both nocturnes in G minor have a contrasting chorale-like section. Was Chopin also influenced by Hamlet when he composed Op. 37, No. 1?
I guess we will never know for sure.....
Some good commentary, especially about Hamlet, but why no mention of tempo? It's supposed to be played much faster, Chopin wrote dotted quarter = 60 with rubato.

Thank you very much Grzegorz, it is an extraordinary course, I was not bored for a moment. Your approach of going to the sources (Eigeldinger) is wonderful. I am working on it with my teacher and I am happy to see that he has the same phrasing, vision of this Nocturne (without the reference to Hamlet). He explains to me that placing the strong accent on the 3rd beat is typical of romanticism. I found your clear and relevant explanations brilliant. I better understand this complaint effect, and page 2! My teacher tells me to play the Chorale faster, but that's the only difference. While deciphering this Nocturne, so strange, enigmatic as you say, I noted 5 different parts. And maybe, in the light of what you said, it would correspond to the 5 acts of Hamlet?
