I had to cut my stroke rate down from 26s/min to 20s/min (because I was dying), but my speed went way up ( from 2:30/500m to 2:10/500m). I'm nearly at 4 million meters and I am not sure if I'm just getting older or my new home (I swear there is no air in there - so stuffy) but my times have taken a big hit. I will defiantly try that chain engagement thing. A tip I have if you find your knee/butt hurting on long rows (15k+) and feel a tendon/ muscle cam over - make sure your feet are straight/parallel to each other. I find when my heels point in a bit (duck stance) I must force myself to kick them out and it helps prevent those knee and butt pains.

Tip #1 was just what I needed. new rower here with a new to me concept 2. My row feels so much better when I do not pull/open up so early and i get the workout in my legs im looking for. push, swing pull!
Been Cycling since 2018 with many Century rides. Time for a change. Saw your past videos. Picking up a Hydro Wave Rower. Think it will be like my Zwift on my bike or peloton. Invest in health. Will do these tips once rower comes in. 👍🏻
Have you ever competed on the water in an 8, its cool! Don't lean back so far, hands straight out fast and sharpen your catches and always count in your mind to help nail the focus and catch. These are just quick pro tips from a long time college rower.
Regarding tip 2, when I hold the handle high, I get a force curve that starts really high and dips below and pushes high again at the hip swing. If I hold the handle a little low at the start, the leg force is more gradual and I get a force curve that looks more like the ideal bell curve. I think this depends on whether you doing steady state or a shorter distance sprint. The sprint requires a higher handle at the catch.

If you think of it as pulling you are setting yourself up for sore biceps. That's a less than ideal body cue. Although this may not instantly click with you, what you are seeking to do with therowing stroke is make use of the anatomy of your back, specifically your lats. The function of the lats is to draw your upper arms back and down. So try thinking through the stroke with these cues. Push with the legs and let the momentum of the push/drive bring the handle as far as it can and then draw your elbows back past your ribs to bring the handle to the finish. Do that coupled with the body swing. You may notice your shoulder blades drawing together to some degree as you do it. Give it a go and notice how it feels and how it takes the strain off your biceps.
Just bought my first ever rower. Its a Force USA R3. Cant afford the C2 but the R3 is very similar and well built. So Im now 103kg down from 134 and have maintained around 71kg lean mass over the two year weight loss. Im 63 nearly so want to build back some muscle. Was in the army and on a good day 92kg and less than 15% body fat. So I don't want to over do it initially. Want to learn good form first then put in the work. What sort of initial time/distance should I do for the first couple of weeks? Cheers

I do not understand "footstraps as low as comfortable possible"? What can not be comfortable by having them at lowest point (concept2). I see some rowers saying it feels like rowing in a hole when too low? I am a 50 year hobby rower and all my PBs up to 5k are with zero holes showing (179cm, 80kg). But watching TH-cam videos, I feel that it is recommended to set the footstraps higher? (to get stronger leg push and better splits)
My low back got crazy tight after a rowing session. Only rowed twice now ......I've discovered that I wasn't dropping my hands down after the full stoke , so I'm going to make that alteration ... Im aware of pushing with the legs first and then back then arms .... Any other tips ?
I don't know I don't have a very big butt and for some reason the machine I got on today at the gym was super slippery or it was my pants or something I went flying off of it not even kidding landed on my ass on the floor went flying off befire i knew it. Bet you never had a client that your coach that's done that! LOL

About the feet: Because I still have belly fat to lose, and I already knew about the lean forward, I adjusted the feet my first week back after a 25 year layoff. I'm still only doing a full proper lean forward for my last 500 m of 2K, and my lean back also needs work, I'm sure. Thanks!

Hi. Via your TH-cam channel I have improved in leaps and bounds. But, there is something I must disagree strongly. Tall individuals need to carry out long strokes. Short individuals, if we want to do competitive rowing must do shorting, quicker strokes. Comparison. You have an adult walking alongside a child. For every step the adult takes, the child takes 2. As a short individual I have tried lengthening my stroke and I can do it, but by doing so, I must keep in mind that the machine is not built inherently for short people. Therefore the idea of lengthening the stroke for greater distance is wrong. Believe you me, I have trialled my theory. So please, whilst doing your next vid, tell individuals of a certain height they need to concentrate on quicker movement or they don’t stand a chance.

I presume that only applies to solo rowing or rowing machines. Wouldn't work with team rowing. The oars would be all over the place and crashing
