When the Beatles would harmonize, George's voice would absolutely shine. I firmly believe that was THE biggest factor in why they sounded so great harmonizing. His low tenor, almost high baritone vocals always punched right through. His voice sits right in the range that the human ear picks up the strongest. George was simply an amazing musician in every way.

I think it's pretty clear George was underrated as a singer, including by John Lennon himself. There's that 1980 interview with Lennon where he says that they gave "Do You Want to Know a Secret" to Harrison to sing because "it only had three notes and he wasn't the best singer in the world".
But actually listening to Harrison's vocal on that song, it's quite good. The song changes key three times, and Harrison sings it all seamlessly. There's a nice vocal line "I'm in love with you, oo-oo-oo-oo", where each time he consistently sings the word "I'm" with a nice extra rasp, and then ends the line with a nice falsetto.

It may not seem like much of an age difference, but to teenagers, it would be, and placed George as very much the junior member. Over the next few years that didn't change, and with the incredible output of Lennon and McCartney, there was little room for George to show his growing skills as both a songwriter and singer. I'm sure John was just being flippant about "[George] wasn't the best singer in the world", but we have the benefit of a lot of hindsight when evaluating George's place in the pantheon of singer/songwriters. Great comments everyone!
Being a musician I fully appreciate vocals particularly harmonies and breaking them down to learn the song…one of the most difficult is George’s in ‘This boy’ john has main vocal and Paul sits high on top but George knits it together with a harmony in between that no one who’s heard the song would ever pick out and sing yet it creates the magic of this beautiful Beatles track. 💙

I think George Harrison was absolutely a beautiful singer he was my favorite Beatle he had such charisma with his personality and he was a wonderful person he just died too young all of the music he did even after the Beatles even with the Beatles I loved him as a vocalist and as a guitar player he’s he inspired me a lot to play guitar and I still play to this day 47 years of a guitar playing it’s still hard to reach his voice has a solo instrumental guitarist it’s not easy but anybody that has that much talent is one hell of a blessed person

    • @Better_Call_Raul
      @Better_Call_Raul 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Ringo is interesting as he is representative of the average male voice. A baritone.
Obviously he is a great musician (drummer) but not a strong singer. But he was surrounded by great singers and so you wonder how much he learned from them and how much he was interested in improving. To be honest, while he is energetic and enthusiastic, I find his voice mediocre at best. Limited range. Does not sing above E4 or F4. And often out of tune in concert. Which leads me to believe that, while one can certainly improve, the ability to sing in tune is GENETIC... Billy Joel has also said this.

"For You Blue" is another under-appreciated song by George Harrison. It's old-timey and kind of simple, and again, George makes the vocal sound effortless.

  • @stanphillips7277

George's "Something" was Frank Sinatra's only cover of any Beatles song. John and Paul were of a mindset that here they had written most of the Beatles extensive library of amazing songs, Frank could have sung any one of them and he chooses one of George's!!
I'm sure George got some brotherly ribbing (or gave some 😂) but Sinatra found that one to be the most beautiful of all!
Whether you agree or not it's quite an endorsement for George I think.
I liked your video my friend!✌️

George learned early on, how to move his voice, getting stuck with all the middle harmony parts on Beatles songs. Turns out, it was the best thing that happened to him. Try singing his harmony part on "In my Life" or "Yes it is", and there are many, many more. One and five are the easy parts, where three is a lot more challenging.

  • @oldbrownshoe52

Your number one and two spot were songs he actually initially wrote for other singers. Or at least with another singer in mind for the number one spot. You he wrote for Ronnie Spector, though I don’t think she recorded it, and Who Can See It he wrote with the idea of it being a Roy Robinson song; a song he would sing. Cool video I’ve always loved George’s higher register in his natural voice.

george was the soul of the beatles. his solo albums are by far the most interesting of all post-beatles solo albums. wish you would have included more of his solo songs! "apple scruffs" for example is extremely tough to sing. beautiful harmony vocals all sung by himself. "far east man" from the maligned dark horse is also a beauty.... and "tired of midnight blue" from extra texture is an absolute gem! songs like "dark sweet lady" and "your love is forever" are also beautifully delivered! lush!

Very nice! I study the Beatles' music for a living, and George's vocal skills are 100%...underanalyzed, let's say. I (roughly alto and mezzo range, some high soprano on a good day) can't even hit some of these pitches half as well.
