Rietvlei Dam, South Africa (Oct 2019) - Fishing at the chalets

We finally managed to get a booking at the newly re-opened chalets at Rietvlei Dam, Pretoria. There are only a few open and we got #13 which had a great fishing spot. The water level was quite low and that actually helped a bit.
This was October and post-spawn and the bass were hungry. We caught lots of decent bass during our stay, sometimes even two at a time.
The carp were less interested in biting unfortunately. We did catch a few smaller ones with conventional bait but the real action happened on the hair rigs with especially pineapple tiger nuts as bait.

Yes exactly 😬 And we haven't tried yet but apparently if you are at the right spot you can also have the kids catch loads of kurper with earthworms...

Hi Norell, if you were near Albert Falls then it was probably a different Rietvlei unfortunately 😕 The one in the video is in Pretoria. But if you are ever up here you should try it out, it's not easy but very rewarding...

Thanks a lot! Don't worry you are in good company there, Rietvlei is a very difficult venue for carp. We caught the smaller carp on perdeby (cinnamon) or almond floats but the large carp like tiger nuts, especially pineapple tiger nuts. So if you are specimen angling try that on a hair rig. Good luck!
