Me, a non-native speaker: I Understand All. I Have Mastered This Language.
    Person: *speaking with British accent*
Me: Ah yes. This person is saying something.

Yeah, I need sub titles to watch any British show, they seem to run many words together, they don't really seem to speak English anymore. I can understand non native English speakers better than British people

This is funny thing. I can clearly see that "old language" speakers have an advantage. UK guy can catch US guy talk, but US guy cannot understand UK guy (sometimes). I was told by one woman in Portugal, Portuguese can understand Brazilians, but not the opposite. My friend from Brazil confirmed that he cannot understand "original" Portuguese and in Lisbon he ordered a meal in the restaurant in English. I was shocked. Cheers from Poland.

You can tell you are making a big effort to speak more clearly and appeal to a wider audience. I imagine a lot of non-British people would still struggle.

As a Spanish guy, I have a hard time trying to understand brittish slang. The main problem is the pronuntiation, specially with thick accents 😅

El acento estadounidense es mucho más fluido si aprendés un par de cuestiones de vocalización que ellos tienen. Por ejemplo, en una conversación normal, una frase como "a little bit of butter" la pronuncian algo así como "alira bira bodeR" (la R mayúscula es la R de habla inglesa)

@@RigbyAdrian Yoo, that shit happens to me a lot when watching Outlander. I try my best to watch it in English, bc it’s the original language, but the Scottish accent is something else, so I have to change and watch it in Spanish.
En español puede que hayan paises que no se logren entender, pero no creo que haya algo tan fuerte como la manera escocesa de hablar el inglés. Aunque muchos dicen que en mi país, República Dominicana, y el resto del caribe hablamos un poco raro. En lo personal yo puedo entender cualquier acento de español.

(We have bottle shop or bottle-o) Deffo (no equivalent I can think of.) Sarni ( we have a sanger or a sango) and Bevvie ( we say grog). All the rest are pretty much the same! Thanks for your channel. I think there are various reasons that I find hard to understand British English in class. Concisely speaking. Pronunciation, speed and slangs make it hard for me to follow and also I feel hard to speak fluently as the native speaker. I have lived in UK for undergraduate, but I still find it hard to follow the native speaker in class as they won't speak like in any English Learning Channel. Speaking faster and with lots of slangs using in conversation. So for many times, I feel I could not hear clearly so that find it hard to catch up the native speaker.

I'm not American but as a French man i feel like i learned English far easier and understand it way better when i'm facing an American speaker due to their history and all the cultural mixing i guess it definitely feels like their accents sounds way more mainstream unlike yall UK citizens who sounds like you just got hit X100 in your mouth by Mike Tyson it's not that i can't understand UK speakers cause if i focus i can understand it just fine however its a hell of a thing to do guaranty i gonna get a god damn a headache after this that's why?I rather not talking to yall XD Also another strange facts is that contrary to the average UK Joe i have no problem understanding BBC TV anchors at all the main reason is because they don't sound like they got broken jaws you know what i mean?

I am preparing for my next exam on the 24th; I assure you that I see at least 10 or 15 videos of you daily; It's real when you say it's upper-advanced hehe Thank you so much for your time. If I finally manage to master your native language Greg over the years, I will definitely teach Spanish to English speakers inspired by you. I say this because it is evident that you are a curious person who takes the time to understand the grammar and you can also distinguish in you a certain affection towards the correct way of expressing yourself, so I think we have that in common. I've been watching you for so many hours that you almost look like a colleague of mine. hahaha Greetings

The ones that get me are the golf instruction videos. For whatever reason, they are all either British or Irish, and I mean HEAVY accent British or Irish. They generally go something like this:
Allo (hello) Allo, Roga here to give you some queek (quick) teeps (tips) on improving yah short game. Plenty of blokes you'll see line up all squabbly, with their feet pointed in every direction but sideways. That's all wrong, folks... I mean, if you wanna heet the ball solid, you gotta squa ya shoulders above the ball, don'tcha? Ya can't have the ball someway ovah heeyah, or even heeyah. That just won't werk now, will it? Eef you line yaself up straight ways ovah the ball, like so... you can see yah swing will HEET the ball at just the propah motion in the sweeng, and ya shot ees moah likely to go straightaways down the fayahway. (Swings club) Blimey, that's a shot right theyah... Again, meedle of the stance, ahms bent sloghtly fowahd, and take ya nohmal sweeng. So, give it a go - see if thees helps you to get a few moah pah's.

Why not 14 beautiful British words?
    Can you please explain?

    • @EnglishWithGreg
      @EnglishWithGreg  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's the small difference...
*14 beautifully British words?* = They are British in a beautiful way.
*14 beautiful British words* = They are beautiful. And they are British.

    Dear Sir,
I was wondering if I might dare to ask you a question ? Why did you say: I watch THE television or THE telly? Can one use the article "The" with television program? Presently, let me say you do have a deep mellifluous voice. I beseech your pardon for disturbing you. I pay my respects to you. Andrea from Venice, Italy.

    • @EnglishWithGreg
      @EnglishWithGreg  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello again Andrea. We generally use *THE* when we use the word *TELLY*, but we don't use it when we say *TV*. What can I say... English is a strange, strange language 😂
      - What's on TV tonight?
      - What's on *the* telly tonight?

i could imagine a lot of non british people would feel struggle when they communicate with the british people.
Somehow im tellin’ the person im talking to in the voice call (btw hes british) “can i go to the bathroom” (obviously i said that bcz i couldnt understand anything he said to me and i needed to quit this call but also i just dont want to be rude) and he said yes just that.

Reasons I do not understand British people:
    1) They speak too fast.
    2) They do not vocalize.
    3) Too much informal speech or slang.
Obviously, not all of them. I've heard different British accents and some of them are clear and beautiful. But I hate when they just spit three glottal syllables for a sentence with 10 words.

Even without the slang or shortened words or whatever, british english is hard to understand because of the way words are pronounced in general, if feels to me english people do not open their mouths or something as much as americans, a friend of mine says they always sound like they are eating someting

After this it comes to my mind that for you to shorten every word over 4 syllabels you must have a lazy toungue then you people pronounce everything so fast as if it was a toungue twister , it's really confusing.
