We are very excited to share with you this awesome budget mill deck which can control the board while you get rid of your opponents libraries. Which other commander would also do well for a mill themed deck?
I love Phenax. I have him in my mill deck, but not as the commander, I have Oona as the commander, going mill/mill-to-exile, with combo and faerie tribal as secondary themes. Just one note, there a small typo in your video, you spell "Tap Fodder" as "Top Fodder" :P
Budget MTG Decks is it tap fodder or top fodder because your vid says top .....tnx for the video wanterd to make a mill comander sinds szadek lord of secrets but i didnt like him as a commander
Thanks for this. I just found your Teysa tech from a while back and am almost done putting it together with a couple personal touches. This will be the next one I try from you.
Nice! I would take out sphinx´s disciple (It´s expensive for a 2/2 flyer, and yes, it draws you cards, but you need to wait a turn at least to do that and you have plenty of ways of draw) for a Wall of Frost (yeah, it´s a defender but is cheaper, mill more, block all day and also freezes if somebody is crazy enough to do that). Great video as always. A hint from a mill player, Always lie to the table and say: "Hey, I am not a mill deck, it´s just for the colors" Best deception ever (Pun intended) ;)
@@BudgetMTGDecks Oh Okay. But consuming aberration is up for grabs for 0.79$ on card kingdom if you don't mind getting one form the guilds of ravnica guild kit. But I see your point.
The deck has ways of wiping the board but mostly just uses targeted removal to get rid of the most dangerous threats to you. We don't mind our opponents using their creatures to kill each other.
This deck may not be full of high cmc spells but it stills needs a bit of ramp. There are plenty of mana rocks to include that are on budget like Dimir cluestone/keyrune/locket/signet (dunno if signet is below $1), Seer's Lantern, Mind Stone, Hedron Archive, Commander Sphere, Silumgar Monument, Darksteel Ingot. Plus i don't think it really needs 40 lands. Personally i use 36-38 lands in my decks and i have very rarely had problems with the abundance of lands. Unless i have a land theme based deck or unless i have utility-only lands that make no mana i never put that many lands in the deck otherwise i get flooded all the time.
Hi Stephan, unfortunately we don't do upgrade videos as the time they would take would limit the number of new decks we could build, playtest and film.
I've been playing phenax for years, first foil mythic I opened, and am a little upset you guys missed the gem Yixilid Jailer, card locks down graveyard/shuffle effects, and not to mention, allows you to play a few cheeky reanimate effects
Hi, that's true, although we rarely lost because someone could reshuffle their library, it just wasn't relevant often enough. What cheeky reanimation effect works with the Jailer?
@@BudgetMTGDecks I was more referencing with it you don't need to worry about people delaying things with their Ulamogs and everything like that, and i more mean that you don't have to rely heavily on gy exile to succeed, so reanimation that can hit your opponents yard works a good bit better than if you are running exile
@@truetbird1730 We often don't include cards which are very valuable, but only in a limited number of scenarios. Too often we have it and it's useless in the match-up or it would come in handy, but we don't draw into it. This gets mitigated when playing lots of tutors, which we also try to shy away from.
I've never played commander. So can you only play a singleton of each card besides land? Like can you put 4 Endbringer in one commander deck? Every budget commander video I watch they never specify how many of each card they discuss. So that just makes me assume you can only play one?
Horseshoe Crab could have been an easy fit. But there is a !other of hate coming in, I would've expected Aetherize, or Aetherspot (which is like $1.29, iirc). I just do not see this surviving if the table or even two players decide they had enough. Either needs more defense or at the least ramp, you are wide open with bad creatures before the god lands. I will say the outro does hit most of this on the head. It is a fun deck meant for fun/casual strategies.
This was the case when we focused a lot on walls and other low power, high toughness creatures. Now with the added utility creatures we tap for value and much more removal we find it not hard to stay in the game as we just use targeted removal when we finally become a target. Which is never really in the early stages of the game because of the non-threatening early creatures.
Other fun adds are Hexprooof and indestructible creatures. Lots of those in blue and cards like Manor Gargoyle, darksteel sentinel etc. I'm building and testing a sub-$200 version and removal is a big problem, and Phenax's devotion should be met. I like creatures with 2-4 devotion. Version I'm testing now (like you, had a few tries) has no counter-spells as I've found it slows the deck down. Try specters and discard. Just as effective and they can mill. More creatures let you do what you do faster than your opponent. Though I like the mill counters.
We didn't want to go Specters as we are saving those for a more discard themed deck and the same with Hexproof and indestructible creatures. Although they could definitely work in this deck too.
Makes sense, I like the deck! Like you guys, I had issue with t he high defense Defender creatures and I play with some clever players that run a lot of removal, but not a lot of board wipe. Definitely gonna build a version when I do my Pauper 32 deck EDH challenge... when I get to it.
I don't think your combo works that well because mindcrank says whenever they're dealt damage and duskmantle Seer says they lose one life. I could be wrong but I think there's an actual difference in the wording of those two.
I don't think Sword of the Paruns works the way you want it to. if you tap a creature to mill, the creature is already tapped and then does not have a +2 toughness benefit anymore.
The Sword is there to boost the toughness of the team so you first tap all the other creatures and tap the creature with the Sword last to make sure everyone of the team (with exception of the sword wielder) has higher toughness.
Hi Roberto, in order to be able to make more videos and be more consistent with publishing of videos I'm currently doing these videos by myself. However behind the scenes we still have everyone working hard to design and playtest all the decks so they are of the quality you have come to expect. - David

Maybe Mirko Vosk 🤔

Wrexial, the Risen Deep is lovely but needs a lot of support :/
Good old Szadek , Lord of Secrets. But I think he´d need a kind of voltron shell around him.
Budget MTG Decks is it tap fodder or top fodder because your vid says top .....tnx for the video wanterd to make a mill comander sinds szadek lord of secrets but i didnt like him as a commander
Perplex is a great counter option that is on-theme and includes transmute so it is always useful.
Consuming Aberration would be good in that deck if you are willing to pay a little extra
Definitely a great non-budget upgrade!
Sometimes I think you're making budget Commander decks for me! Thanks, need this now.
Who says we aren't?
Love the merfolk subtheme with Phenax. Lorwyn/Shadowmoor had some bonkers U/B cards that are super fun for EDH.
Since you like all the sac lands and self mill you should put scaretiller in the deck. Would be huge land ramp.
Thanks for this. I just found your Teysa tech from a while back and am almost done putting it together with a couple personal touches. This will be the next one I try from you.
Sweet, let us know how it does!

What about these two enchantments, which mill every opponent when you draw cards? Wouldn't these be perfect?
They probably didn't include them because they where worth more than a dollar
although I don't particularly like neither dimir nor mill, this deck looks pretty neat. great work!
Thanks appreciate the words of encouragement!
Why wasn't consuming aberration included in this deck? Wouldn't it fit perfectly into it?
Consuming Aberration is over $1 so we couldn't include it.
@@BudgetMTGDecks Oh Okay. But consuming aberration is up for grabs for 0.79$ on card kingdom if you don't mind getting one form the guilds of ravnica guild kit. But I see your point.
No board wipes like devastation tide or Crux of fate? These are pretty budget to fit in.

Yea 40 is way to many especially when you have other ramps like artifacts
I'm worried about the mana, does the deck have enough ramp?
Nope. It also doesn't seem to be ready for a 3v1 as it barely has enough to survive 1v1
This deck does not use ramp. It uses additional card draw to make sure it hit's its land drops and has extra removal to survive focused threats.
Bought the deck. looking to have a lot of fun with it. Will you be doing an upgrade type video for this deck?
Hi Stephan, unfortunately we don't do upgrade videos as the time they would take would limit the number of new decks we could build, playtest and film.

But that may also just be true with my play group who like their big dumb eldrazi, and it allows the card to be a bit better than majority of the time

That's correct Mike, Commander is indeed a singleton format. So one card max with exception of basic lands.

Phenax is amazing
are family plays with 6 players do you think it will survive in this situation?
6 Players is a lot, it really depends on how good you are at playing the political game ;).
I better see Haunt the Hightower in this deck!
Could you list a deck list in the description or comments? Something that can be copy pasted into a deck builder app.
Hi Jonathan, the deck lists are always in the description of all our videos.
Lol I see it now! Was looking for text not the link.
Clicking that notification as fast as my fingers allow
Now i need a phenax
awesome! thanks
I don't think your combo works that well because mindcrank says whenever they're dealt damage and duskmantle Seer says they lose one life. I could be wrong but I think there's an actual difference in the wording of those two.
Hi, if you do a quick search on Google you will find that the combo does work as described despite the difference in wording.

What does mill mean?
Putting cards from the top of your library directly into your graveyard.
Go for Reaper King everything tribal budget ! :D
Thanks for the suggestion!
Do Mogis next if you can
We've added him to the to-do pile! Thanks for the suggestion!
Cant help but notice that david's by himself in the last few videos.
