The ‘apyas’, or dishonour, he talks about is perhaps the karma we accumulate through thoughtlessness, which then follows us like a shadow. As usual, death is the powerful reminder of ultimate realities.

Brothers Shivji and Badri Suthar graced the Rajasthan Kabir Yatra organised around Bikaner in 2012, taking great delight in singing this song on the 2nd night’s halt in Napasar village. From Bikaner themselves, the ‘vaani parampara’ (oral tradition of mystic poetry) of this region has been in their family for four generations. Shivji and Badri learnt from their father, Amarji Suthar. Shivji started performing at the age of 15 and has been singing for the last 45 years. Locally, he is lovingly known as ‘Kalakar ji’ (the Artist). They can be contacted at [phone].
The Rajasthan Kabir Yatra was a travelling festival, which toured 7 villages with 13 singers of bhakti, sufi and baul poetry in February 2012. The Yatra was organized by Lokayan in Bikaner (www.lokayan.org) in partnership with the Kabir Project, Bangalore.
