    The best line in the movie comes before the Palancio shootout. The inspector said "suppose the rookies panic and start shooting." To which Callahan replies, "There nothing wrong with shooting, as long as the right people get shot."

    I've always wondered whether that was in the original script or whether it was a mistake by the actor but left in the cut because it accidentally reveals the character and thought process behind the man. If someone could help I'd be really thankful. The look Clint Eastwood gave as he delivered the line could suggest it was a mistake. My take is we (the audience) aren't supposed to know Lt Briggs' true character/motives until the end of the film.

    • @jamesrogers47
      @jamesrogers47 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It was scripted. We knew that Briggs was involved with the "Magnum Force," as it became very clear that he was running interference for them. His animosity towards Callahan was a sort of cover. How would anyone suspect him of complicity with a cell of renegade, vigilante cops ( should they slip up and be caught, ) if he was openly butting heads with an Inspector who was considered a little too eager to use his gun?

    • @ApartmentKing66

      My take is that the "supposed to be GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT," line was written in intentionally, as a "FREUDIAN SLIP" by Lt. Briggs (who is actually in charge of the death squad(s) on the SFPD) in order to demonstrate his inner struggle to conceal his TRUE motivations re. "upholding the law" (he later disparages the phrase "uphold the law" after Harry tells Briggs what HE HIMSELF would do if faced with a similar circumstance).

      I guess that’s what Lt Briggs might have thought of Harry Callahan. I think he always hated Harry.

    Fast forward to 2023 USA.... now firearms laws are being passed in various States that require the citizen to prove they are innocent.

      You have only One Life! True. But then, they’re not Godly men, so it’s not surprising they wouldn’t act in a Godly way.

    MagForce the worst Dirty Harry film and unlike the others doesn't hold up well on repeat viewing.

      Disagree. I like it the best, and it DOES hold up to repeated viewings (I've seen it 100 times easy...maybe more).
      Hal Holbrook, the rogue cops, the funny scenes at his apartment, Mitchell Ryan as crazy Charlie McCoy, the raid on Palancio, etc. all make this movie worth watching, again and again.

      One of the stupidest Eastwood pictures has to be "The Gauntlet".

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I beg to differ. I find The Enforcer the lamest of the series.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnhardman3 - that may be. But in that movie, Clint isn't playing Dirty Harry. In the Dirty Harry series, Clint is Harry Callahan. In The Gauntlet, Clint plays Ben Sharkley. And he plays a police officer in a different city & state. Harry Callahan works for the San Francisco P.D.
