  • In 1995 SEGA decided to take the concept of environmental interaction and make it the core focus of a brand new platforming game. And the result is one of the most unique games of its generation. Regardless of how you pronounce it, Ristar is worthy of your attention.

Ristar is truly one of the best games of the 16-bit era and one of the best Sega Genesis/Mega Drive titles of all time! While it may seem simplistic at first they build around Ristar’s moveset to create some of the most unique platforming challenges, and obstacles if any game. They get so much mileage out Ristar’s stretchy arms mechanic and progressively creates more and more unique moves around it, like swinging from those star launchers, climbing on walls, using enemies etc, the game expands on these mechanics until the end of the game! I really can’t praise this game enough!

Ristar only having one game is both a blessing and a curse.
It means that it will never be tainted, 100% of ristar's games are good. the downside being it is almost forgotten to time now.
honestly i like ristar as a mascot even better than sonic.

You're right that 100% of ristars games are good but there are two of them. Just like with the 8-bit Sonic games, the Game Gear game is a different game.

A curse that came out around Sega Saturn's release so Ristar at the time didn't get much exposure which is sad.

My relationship with ristar is strange, I remember played it on a weird emulator when I was four, dying on like the second level, than giving up and not thinking about ristar for nearly a decade. Now I'm seeing more of him and it's kinda cool.

Amazing video! I'm 37 now, but I remember, when I was much much younger, having a friend I would ask constantly, almost every week, to allow me borrow this game cartridge. This game has one of the best soundtracks, and just simple fun gameplay I've experienced. There's not many games today that do what Ristar did for me so many years ago.

I've always wondered why this game doesn't get as much attention as it should, the graphics and mechanics are amazing, the only thing i can think of is that it came out in 1995, late in the Genesis' life.

Very well done! Thank you for highlighting this gem. Although we never got a sequel I am happy to say the Game Gear version is not a one to one 8-bit port of this 16-bit classic but it has levels not found in the 16-but version. It also looks incredible for an 8-bit game thanks to the great color pallet of the Game Gear. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Ristar and Game Gear Ristar plays perfectly and looks amazing on the Analogue Pocket.

This is also why Gargoyle's Quest (1 & 2) are quite interesting platformers. And Bionic Commando, for other reasons.
Another thing worth mentioning is that a second Ristar game was made for the Game Gear. It's a different game, but more of a re-interpretation than a sequel. It's worth checking out.

I love seeing someone give Ristar it's props. The game is amazing and is STILL, even after all these years, one of my favorite games of all time. It doesn't get nearly enough love or recognition. This was easily one of my favorite Genesis games right up there with Sonic 3&K, Shinobi 3, Streets if Rage 2, and Aladdin. I really wish Sega would make a new one, but sadly it seems like a game lost to time, i don't think a new Ristar will ever see the light of day.

Probably the last Genesis game I got (of over 40 titles in my collection) - other than Rocket Knight, this is the one that has lasting, and magical memories for me - everything he says echoes with me. Whether it was the exquisite soundtrack, brilliant and personality-filled sprites, the inventive bosses, colourful and vibrant worlds to explore - everything about it was utter perfection. I lived and breathed this game and treasured it for years.

    • @noaht2005
      @noaht2005 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@RoyMcGamer I’m not sure if it’s unique enough for its own video but if you liked the MD game it’s 100% worth playing as a sort of Ristar 1.5. There are some big differences like collectable stars, different special stages that feature them and are unlocked by getting the planet-shaped treasure in both stages of each world, several new gimmicks, no Scorch, and a new world replacing Undertow plus a heavily revised Freon where you get bombs stuck to you, and you have to wash it off in the water asap. You also get invinciblity power-ups, revised bosses (Scorch boss is in Greedy’s castle) and fortunately do not have to listen to an even worse version of Eriko Hanada’s scratchy-ass voice. (‘Pway wid me?’ No thanks.) In some ways it’s actually better that the original, if more conventional, and what is the same is incredibly faithful. Give it a go, even on an emulator. If you’re going that route, play the Japan version or the restoration patch, since there is an extra level in the world which replaces Undertow. I don’t know why they cut it but it’s certainly a change of pace with it’s open world nature

Looking at Ristar objectively I can't say it's a masterpiece, but it's a very good platformer with designs that were ahead of it's time. I think the Game Gear port was also very impressive! I wouldn't mind seeing the little guy make a comeback.

Even I wonder why SEGA hasn't bothered to follow up this excellent game as well...until I learned why once I researched info about it. Turns out that Ristar's poor sales weren't the only reason for its lack of success.
The REAL reason is that SEGA didn't have time for Ristar...and probably never will.
It also doesn't help that the Ristar game was released late in the Sega Genesis' lifespan, and by then, SEGA's focus was on promoting the new Sega Saturn console. They wanted to beat Sony to market. Long story.
They even assigned the team behind Ristar to work on other projects, giving them NO chance to make a new Ristar game, even for the Saturn.
If SEGA had allowed Ristar to have more prominence, then maybe he could have been a really successful franchise! 😁
