What did I get myself into?! METERS of SNOW on the high mountain passes of Colorado |S6-E108|

- In this episode, I am first riding to Telluride, an old American town with a fascinating mining history. To get from there to Lake City, I have to cross some high mountain passes and I did not realize there would be so much snow up there...

I've been having hard time in my life recently. I don't know why but your videos always calm me down and give me peace. Thanks for your positive energy Noraly 🙏🏻💐
Stay strong
Get to the gym
If possible, go out in the nature, see some greenery. My father passed away last year at a not-so-old age of 70 and I had a hard time because I always thought we had more time. Then when things would get really heavy, I would take out my scooter and just ride 100-200km out with really no destination. Just ride through the rural area, see some greenery, see some people living simple lives. And I would return home with more energy to face the world for some more days.
Itchy Boots isl food for heavy souls indeed! 🤗
May the shit be up to you chin, here is refuge, here is your escape to smiles and cheeriness!
Once you are fuelled up again, kick the problem's rears and have a ball, fellow Itchybooter! 🙏👍💪😃
Yes Sir👍
Does anyone else think that Noraly is the most likeable rider on TH-cam ?
There is nothing more refreshing than listening to someone speak so eloquently...without dropping 'f-bombs' every 5th word.
The beauty in this, is a wider audience...since it can be shared confidently with children. There's an educational quality in all her videos, that children would benefit seeing.
She sees beauty everywhere...always a positive outlook...and always downplays any drama. It doesn't get any better than that.
Most definitely
yup she like coca cola you keep coming back 🚴
Noraly and @wildlensbyabrar. Both amazing
Red light is an engine overheating warning light.
First gear, high revs, on a hill, over rocks means the engine is working hard with little airflow to cool it. Add in thin air which makes the motor run rich and you have a recipe for one hot engine. At lower altitudes, you wouldn't likely have had an overheating issue though you'll always want to keep an eye on temps when running high revs in first or second gear for long periods of time.
Good point, I might add fuel mixer at altitude and lighter air at the top causing overheating.
@@maesc2001 That is true, one could also argue that the ambient air temperature is colder the higher you go which is a denser charge. Better for heat exchange, etc. there are a lot more factors but in the end the light was on. 🤷♂️
This bike is fuel injected, so the computer will compensate for the altitude. Agree with the thin air cooling though.
Red light, engine overheating. Pull over and figure out why. Fan not working, coolant loss, coolant froze (if not enough antifreeze), etc. Don't keep riding or it's possible to cost an engine and really leave you stranded.
It did not puke any coolant so it should be ok.
My husband and I started watching your channel when we started planning our trip out to Colorado and Utah (from New Jersey). My husband has been riding motorcycles and dual sports for 12 years, but I never had before. With only months to go before our trip I made the decision to buy a bike and learn to ride so I can experience Colorado and Utah in the best possible way.
Your videos gave me so much hope and inspiration! They made me feel like I could do it; go from never riding before in my life to riding trails that some people never get the chance to. All in about 5 months!
And now I’m happy to say that we’re half way through our trip and I’ve just completed the Alpine Loop and many other trails that I never imagined I’d be able to! And it only makes it more amazing that your Colorado/Utah videos happened to come out around the same time as we’re here! So I can scream at the TV, “I DID THAT TOO!” Lol
Thank you for sharing your story. Your travels are amazing and inspirational to so many!
Head to Ouray colorado do yankee boy basin then ophir pass from ourway then corkscrew pass then imogene pass.
@@galenamall2061 I have to say, I thought this was Jamaican at first, because I didn't know those were trail names
Good for you Kaitlyn. Amazing experience and hats of for doing that after only 5 months riding.
Make sure you check out Independence Pass going to Aspen. Also make sure you see Breckenridge
Overheating red light is a known problem of the CRF300's at high altitude terrains. Next time it happens, turn engine off immediately, then turn ignition on without starting the engine and listen for the fan working.
1. If the fan is working, turn the switch off and let the bike cool down for 15 to 20 minutes. Then re-start the engine and the overheating light should not come back on again. You are good to go.
2. If the fan was not working. Do not re-start the engine anymore.
Call a towing truck.
Do not keep riding with the overheating light on. High risk of engine damage.
Just my two cents... Keep on riding Noraly
Good advice, but I don’t think there’s a woman on this earth who has ever stopped when an engine warning light comes on!
@@peterwrench4416 Or...my brother ...
@@peterwrench4416 I am one of them
An engine getting hot at altitude is not an issue. It's normal. We're just used to oversized coolant systems and the crf has a small engine that is, in this case, already working hard during most of the time. Here looks liek a long climb at "very" high altitudes on rough terrain and she was having to ride in first gear (high engine speed, low airflow). Nothing out of normal for it to overheat. Most vehicles will end up having an issue working in first gear, loaded, for a ong time.
But you are right, stop, let it cool down.
13:40 no red light, 14:11 red light.
While it's fuel injected, would still check the air filter (esp on carbs), and radiator overflow catch.
With out fan assistance, the radiator needs air flow of 20+mph to function properly.
Gearing down to 1st, high strain on engine, and reduced speed/air flow, is a trifecta for a hot engine.
Never put snow on a hot engine, may cause cracks in metal due to thermal stresses.
Consider the water-less coolant, promoted by Jay Leno, it has a better heat transfer coefficient.
My grandfather was the sheriff of Silverton in the latter 40's when it had three mines and three brothels going. And my great-grandfather built the last section of the road from Durango which is where I was born. Awesome Mexican restaurant. Bless Ya!

Rye, my Gr Grandfather was Sheriff of Montezuma County 👍👍
Love Durango. I'l be riding thru there next week from Tucson for the 2nd time this year. Big shout out to John from The Budget Inn in Durango. He always takes care of his motorcycle riders!
omg, that's amazing. Oh the stories he could tell. Thanks for sharing.
Now that you're going to be in areas I've ridden in lots, I have to warn you to beware of deer. Don't ride within an hour of dawn or dusk (or at night, not that you do). The deer are most active in these hours, and they either freeze or run towards you. It's terrifying and can be lethal. I know it sounds crazy, but just trust me lol. Keep an eye out on the sides of roads for them, too.
And if you miss one, look for another one.
You do realize that this was probably a month ago.
Remember - she's at least a week ahead of what we're seeing. So she could be in Wyoming or Nebraska by now!
Actually, what he is saying, is smoke alot of dope with some trust fund babies and never ride below 100 mph….. good luck…
And when she makes it to Alberta or BC, it will be moose. She would bounce right off one of those and it wouldn’t be pleasant. Also, when bears hear those little purring engines, they like to chase them.
This is my first time contacting you. I’m a 79 year old male who is vicariously through younger people who like to travel the world the countries etc. etc. etc. you get the drift. There are one here watched and like her videos and her adventuress
This gentle, polite lady puts a helmet on, sits on a motorbike and becomes a beast. Wonderful...!
Just stopped in to say, how incredibly beautiful the US is. We travel so much abroad, yet beauty and magic lie right here before us in our own backyard :)
Red light is coolant temperature, just means that it got the coolant pretty hot with redlining the bike up the pass.
As long as it returns to normal temperature at normal RPM it's not an issue.
But you should probably stop and let it cool down before you say, "I don't know what it means so let's keep going". Red lights usually mean stop.
@@TimsMotorcycleAdventures That was my thought too. She could have had a serious issue on her hands otherwise. This idiot lights can mean several things (some more serious than others).
@@TimsMotorcycleAdventures Have you noticed the stop traffic signs affair?
Certainly what I would call stupidity rains with I don’t know what it is I’ll just keep going over temperature this is probably that the fluid is low
Too many things starting to happen she’s going to disappear and will never see her again
Noraly, better check the coolant level and top it up if needed. If it is more or less ok, it could be a wise thing to check if the fan starts going when the engine is hot.
Watched long way up on the weekend and even with a crew and production team behind them they did not manage to create content like Itchy Boots. Noraly is bringing us so much more in scenery, information and entertainment and that all by herself. Amazing! Thank you for sharing your creative talents and adventures with us. Safe travels!
That show was a real disappointment. I agree that Noraly produces better video than ANY of their productions including Long Way Round. But Up was terrible. They skipped hundreds and hundreds of miles, they cheated VERY badly on their goal of doing it on electric (seems like they only did maybe a few hundred miles of the route on electric) and heck they covered what seems like a thousand miles riding in a bus.
Noraly showed us more of south and central America in a week's episodes than they did that whole production, the videography is better, the interactions with people is better, and things don't seem as rushed. Long Way seems to manufacture problems, which I guess is what reality shows do really.
Pats self and country on the back when Noraly says so far riding in the US has been nothing short of spectacular..go America yay
It's kind of surreal to see you traveling through the US like this. I wasn't sure how much you'd really explore though, but it's great to see you still taking the scenic routes and getting to go places most people could never dream of. That cliffhanger is kind of intense too.
all these seasons i'm so used to different accents when they speak english and the one place with the cash register i was like wow the guy speaks good english no accent duh your in colorado.
In the 90’s I had a boss that took me through all those old ghost towns, Ouray, Silverton, etc in a small stock Ford Ranger truck. Some of those two tracks were beyond scary. Most incredible views I have ever seen! Felt like we exploring another planet.
I've been looking forward to this video for day's! I'm so excited to watch your Colorado adventure. The weather changes in Colorado so fast. You can experience all four seasons in one day...lol and the thunder and lightening storms are the strangest I've ever experienced. I hope you get to experience one. Safe travels Noraly.
The Colorado backcountry and remote towns are so beautiful! I really appreciate you sharing this ride across the high altitude, snowy passes! It is definitely a challenge, yet you make it look so easy! Thanks Noraly and ride safe as you continue your northward adventure!
Oregon, Washington State and British Columbia are even nicer.
@@abouttime5000 Yeah but not so many North-South Forest Service trail. A lot of West-East trails over the Cascades if you know where to go.
Oh yay glad you at least went through Silverton, shame that guy was in a bad mood!! Oh Oh looks like some weather moving in on you, hope you made I to Lake City safely..
Man, tough Monday. I had to stop in to get a hit of Noraly positivity to set me right. Never underestimate the power of a positive attitude and a big smile! Loved this episode, of course. Noraly never fails to provide quality content!
Noraly, "I think I'll take it a bit easier", then takes the rock strewn pass, with drifts over head high. Even Alaska tries to warn with red lights. Gotta love her!!
yeah would be good if she actually read the manual for the bike and not torture it.
And still laughing and having a good time.
Applauding her risky behavior will only make her fall or even worse thing to happen to her. Stop applauding her when she puts herself at risk and in danger. You feed the psycho narcissist in her and that puts her in life danger even. Watch her channel for the scenery not for the danger she puts herself at times for some viewers like you.
@@carlwermar8161 You are not her father so mind your own business. Nothing she has done so far has put her life in danger and she is not a child but a highly experience RTW adventurer, unlike you.
@@jamesfairmind2247 how do you know what i am??? Secondly sinaloa was a huge risk she even said she was stopped by people with machine guns. And no i am not her relative but i am a human being who does not want anyone to be sacrificed or take risks for my entertainement like you want.
Each time I start worrying about your safety on some of those treacherous trails you travel, I have to keep reminding myself that the video is already published so my heartbeat slows down a bit!
Yeah ! and me Haha !😯😅🤣
Exactly my thought!
Me too. 😰 ☺️
Noraly, the red lights was for too high temperature of your engine, cause you rush engine in first gear long time to uphill! Be careful with that next time, it can brake your engine. Check the coolant level, hear the fan, if it is not started next time, you have to stop your engine to avoid a damage! Wait until the temp will go down, or you may use the snow to cool your radiator (not the engine block!) It is fine for serious mountain conditions, but do not ignore any red lights from your dashboard :) have a save trip!
Yup, had the rally 300 engine get hot in peak summer offroading in france. Just park the bike, turn off engine and leave the contact on. Radiator fan will keep cooling. Enjoy the scenery (or boil a kettle for a cup of coffee like we did. ;-) ) . Toedels!
and watch for braking over load/failure coming down the mountain.
Loading in and out of the van could have loosened a connection to the fan. The crash was pushed in and had to be pulled out. Typing this is foolish because she is posting some time later. I only follow her TH-cam videos so I don't know what's coming
altitude = lean mixture. running lean at low speed = overheat. Restarting the bike on some model, remaps the jetting fuel map. stopping the engine when you see that kind of light should always be your first and only reflex
@@user-ke7ic4vu2f Right answer to the red light issue !
that dude with the gate had a weird attitude "well you're already here..." LOL sir, there is a fence here and I am trying to respect whatever is going on here.
It's because most people in Colorado, especially in the mountains, are anti-social people haters. That's why they move there, to get away from people. So they usually have an attitude towards you unless you are in their clan or they need something from you. Colorado is not the same place today as when John Denver moved there in the early 70s. Today it mainly attracts grouchy, lone wolf Libertarian types who don't like anyone and they don't like it when you intrude on their territory. Colorado is best experienced today for it's natural beauty. But its culture is a nightmare unless you love being alone 24/7.
He was helping to set up for a big event (perhaps the big music festival?) People going to this event know not to go to the venue before it is ready. He is probably working for free and he likely assumed that Noraly was one of those participants who ignore the rules . . . or something like that, and only get in the way of good folk just trying to do their job. Fair assumption, but wrong, and a bit rude. But I'm glad that no animals were harmed in the interaction.
I don't know what the "Oscars" are for YT adventure documentaries, but Noraly should be a definite nomination. Just great stuff.
Dear Noraly be careful when driving in the US and a stop sign means you have to stop, my experience when driving a motor in the US that the Police is especially focused on motors that don’t stop for these sighs.
And thank again for the beautiful footage, stay safe

One characteristic of Noraly that is dear to my heart is her approach to traveling. She fully embraces the serendipitous nature that arise when traveling back roads in general , and specifically back roads by motorcycle. Red light came on? Keep going & we'll see what comes of it 😋 Good on ya, lady!

Itchy Boots in Colorado! A Colorado Rocky Mountain High (John Denver). So fun to travel these passes with you. Happy Trails!
I love these mountain passes. They're very beautiful.
You are riding in my backyard. Love the Colorado rockies.
Got flashbacks to my ride a week ago. I was travelling a mountain pass in the west of Norway, and my battery died. No cell phone signal, not really clothed for 10°C weather, rain and riding alone. Luckily a helpful guy stopped, called for a tow truck and actually came back to tell me they were on their way. It was amazing to see the tow truck to 3 point turns down the mountain, though, and they luckily had a battery that fit and quickly had me on my way. Things usually work out, although not always as planned 😅
I always like to see travelers remind people that there isn't always regular cell phone service everywhere in the US. A lot of the cell phones companies try to convince people 99% of the US has coverage, which isn't close to being true.
Welcome to my home state of Colorado Noraly! As you are finding already, the weather and road (trail) conditions can change at a moments notice, and there is no time of year when it can't snow! I discovered your channel when you were crossing into Costa Rica, as we were preparing to move down there from Colorado. Such a funny world that we're getting settled in Costa Rica just as you are crossing into my old home.
I wish you continued success and a joyful journey! I also want to thank you for always being so positive and enthusiastic, despite the many trials and tribulations. Cheers!
Couple years ago when we were out there we were going over Cinnamon Pass in the middle of August and ended up having a snowball fight right before the summit. Of course being from Ohio we were all in shorts. A family from Texas came up on us from the other side all in winter gear. They were staring at us like we were crazy 😂.
Colorado is my homestate as well and I have a cousin that lives in Costa Rica lol!
Colorado WAS my home state but has become overrun. Far too many people moved there and ruined everything.
Keep safe Noraly, We'll see and be amazed in Alaska soon🥰
I loved your comment about being disappointed that the saloon didn’t have flappy little wooden doors. When I went through Texas for the first time as a kid I was so upset and let down because I expected everyone to be riding around on horses and they all just drove cars and trucks like everywhere else.
Ah, these towns! And the mountains around. Absolute epic! ❤️

Lake City is one of my favorite places. We rode the Alpine Loop in June.
I lived there for 25 years , I sure do miss it . It makes me so happy to see you explore there .
What are those dresser-looking things at the intersections in Telluride?
Flower boxes that prevent cars from using that space to turn left . The street is very wide so pedestrians need a halfway point that’s protected from tourists not paying attention. It’s very pretty there so people are always looking in other directions .

I live in Kansas but my heart is always in Colorado! So fun to watch you discover such a beautiful state! Been to Silverton and Telluride many times. Beautiful mountain towns!
In 1993 hebben we de stoomtrein van Durango naar Silverton genomen. G E W E L D I G en we waren zwart als roet (nee, van het roet) toen we terug waren. Destijds waren de panden een stuk minder netjes onderhouden. **We did the steam train ride from Durango in 93. Was awesome. Buildings are a lot better maintained now. **
In the '80's I used to live in Aspen (backpacking Aussie) and we often went to Telluride to get away from the glitz and glamour of Aspen. Apparently the glitz and glamour moved to Telluride and has become what it is today. We did a lot of 4wding on Black bear pass. Telluride also used to have an annual hang gliding competition that I went to. And last fun fact: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid robbed a bank in Telluride. The Rocky mountains are incredible scenic and the stars at night were amazing! Enjoy.

Many of the old mining towns are very quaint and scenic. You definitely picked good paths through the mountains to ride. Higher elevations are likely to have more snow. Anxiously anticipating your next video to see how you navigate the snow covered roads. Hoping it all works out for the best.
This brought back fond memories of my youth in the Rockies of Southern Alberta before gov't closed the passes to motor vehicles. The Rockies are beautiful. 🇨🇦
Going thru Telluride in the Snow is a wonderful experience ......Traveling from Silverton to Ridgeway then to Montrose is the Scenic View to Go !

This might be my favorite episode thus far. I could also be a bit jaded since I love riding in Colorado so much (I live in GA). I've never done the unpaved passes so getting to see you go across them is something new for me. Noraly, I wish I was as fearless as you are. So many things I admire about Itchy Boots. Her sense of adventure, courage, valor, determination and more. One thing I wish she has with her is a Sat Phone. For those remote places where she dares to cross and explore which happen to be inhabitable and so remote. You could spend a couple of weeks just riding the mining roads in that area. Glad you are going to Lake CIty, its one of my favorite places to visit. Great video.
If I remember correctly, Black Bear Pass is a one way trail going down the mountain to Telluride. I think they reverse it for one day per year or something. So either way I don’t think you would’ve been able to take that out of town. From what I’ve seen it’s not the most technically difficult trail, but those drops and hairpins are something else. Awesome video as always, Noraly!
Correct. Both ends of Black Bear Pass road are two-way so you can enter the trail from either end: Telluride or CO550. However, there is a short narrow section just over the saddle of the pass that is one-way east to west. You can only run the entire pass end-to-end from the entrance on CO550.
I think Black Bear is one way primarily because of a section called "The Steps". It's not a long section, but it's really, really nasty. Even going East to West. Going the other way, unless you have Trials or Hard Enduro experience, I wouldn't recommend it.
@@MrFrench-ois Correct me if I am wrong, isn't it two way coming from Telluride until you get to that old power station? "The Steps" are just past that I think.

As a Canadian I’m not used to saying ´what’s that snow doing there?´ but there it is. Fine riding as usual.
that pass ... those are AWESOME places! but jeee, she is riding fast!
You are a school in the world of travel, we learn a lot from you, God bless you❤👍
I am glad you got to go through Utah and Colorado they are some of the more beautiful places in the US. But there are many many more because the US is so big. The Serra Nevada mountains are also very amazing. Be safe and have your bikes coolant and fans check to make sure every thing is working correctly.
Nice 👌🏻 .. i love snow ❄️ lovely view with mountains…i ❤️Colorado.
The past you’re riding now used to be the old brown Road tracks. Most of those old passes or the Mining Railroad tracks. Enjoy your ride. I know the area quite well.
I did those two passes in 2006 on a Suzuki Scooter going south in August. Not much snow then. Ground clearance was a bit of a problem a few times. I had slid my fork tubes down in the top triple tree clamp giving me 5/8's inch more up front and had 1 1/2 inch shock extenders in the rear plus a taller Car tire in the rear so over all about 2 inches more clearance than stock.
Not a lot of Power reserve at 12,100 feet, both ME and the bike. I'd stopped at the top of the pass to eat my lunch and dropped my MSR fuel bottle and had to chase it down hill and got so out of breath. Took about 5 minutes to walk back 150 feet up hill, stopping to get air.
If you end up passing through Oregon I'm sure you would love all the old mines of the Ochoco forest. Tons of fun roads, history, fossils, and geology. I love your videos!!!
Welcome back norali good to see you back to road big fan from Somalia 🇸🇴
Clearly recovered from your fall!! You probably do more off road in a day that a lot of adventure bikes do in a year..........
Itchy’s riding is top notch, even with a recovering sprained ankle!
Incredibly beautiful! Love the scenery. En de marmotten :-) Thanks for yet another great vid, Miss Boots 👍.
Greets from the Netherlands 🌷🇳🇱, T.
I didn't travel a lot in my life. I only rode a motorcycle once and I almost crashed. But yet here I am and you are one of my favorite channels to watch. I am so enjoying your videos and your travels and you have inspired me in many ways in what I do. I also love all your drone footages, the music and the editing is great. Keep up and safe journeys. Love from Greece, I hope to see you around Europe soon.
Wow, this is one crazy ride.
Great rugged scenery.
Thanks for taking us along.
Bless up

Hallo Itchy Boots, my parents and I moved from The Netherlands in 1960 to California Long Beach area when I was 6. We went back and forth for family and work, moved back 3 times each time only 2 years and got Itchy Boots each time for California. Lived in different area of the US due to aerospace work etc. But just loved California Long Beach, Seal Beach area. We ran across your TH-cam channel and have been following you every new video since. For a Dutch gal to drive alone, we are scared for you when your in the mountains to close to the edges. Slow down a hair if the road is that bad. We have been riding big tour bikes throughout the States. We got the sidecar interest going again around 1974. My parents also took their Rialta motorhome from Long Beach California to the City of the North Pole in Alaska. They also did Canada, Florida and Nova Scotia and other trips throughout. But Alaska that was one hell of a trip but a lot of big RV'S did not make it over the bad roads but my parents my dad driving got the rig up there in one peace. Some headlight and windshield damage but she held it together. This was around 1987. Most people don't get to see America like you are seeing it. I almost believe you will move here also. The Netherlands will be to small for you after traveling here. I miss certain things from there like the snackbar but that's about it. So be careful you have a ways to go and take it easy near those edges. All us TH-camrs are glued to your fun and great action full video's. The quality of your video's is also 👌. Watchout for all the fires burning. Not much water to put them out 🙃.
Ok good luck from the van der Veer's say hi to your parents at home who are mostlikely worried sometimes when they watch your videos. 👍🇺🇸
Just outstanding scenery.
Good stuff, Noraly.
Be safe, be smart, keep your eyes peeled and be alert in the mountains, especially in Alaska when you get there.
Noraly is Amazing! The three Best athletes in the Netherlands. Noraly. Mathieu Van der Poel and Max Verstappen. Coming out of the jungle in Guatemala was impressive!

Great content Itchy Boots! Cant wait to see what is next! Ride safe!
Itchy! You made it to the San Juans! I want to point out that Black Bear is a one way road down to telluride. Very dangerous road. I may or may not be the Alpine Ranger for the Forest Service and monitor Imogene, engineer, corkscrew, Yankee boy, Governor basin and Poughkeepsie. I occasionally go to Ophir pass. Last week a biker broke his hand on Governor. Another biker went off black bear ( I saw dash cam video on this). He was hoisted up with a tow strap and Jeep winch. I also waited around on Imogene to see if a biker, with half his left arm missing, would make it up. He clutched with his elbow. It’s hectic. The drop offs are steep and these mountains are unforgiving. I can’t stress it enough. Be safe!
Telluride is something else! Especially coming from Imogine Pass!
I drove from South Carolina, to Colorado on an overland adventure awhile back, it's one of those places you have to experience in person, videos don't do it justice.
Sure would be an awesome place to live.
Love your channel, just binged watched like 50 episodes. Never thought it would be so good watching your adventures. Stay safe 🤘
