    In the past, an alternative to this has been using legal currency coins in machines that transform them into souvenir coins with no currency value. This has the effect of destroying some small amount of currency which can be problematic. Issuing zero value currency in local patterns as souvenirs not only dodges this problem, it adds a source of profit to slightly offset currency production costs in general.

    • @mikemx55
      @mikemx55 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not only problematic, but also in most countries is ilegal, as it is ilegal to deface money

      Here in Estonia it's like this. You insert 2€ coin and 5 cents to the machine. 2€ is a fee and the 5 cents will be pressed into souvenir coin by rotating the handle mechanically changing the shape and size of the 5 cents.

    This reminds me of a thing we have in the USA and Canada called "squished pennies". Its a legal defacing of federal money for the purpose of printing a landmark or touristic attraction onto a penny by replacing its 1¢ value with artwork. You insert your penny at a tourist destination and it crushes the copper into a blank canvas that can have a design printed on it. This seems very similar but ours aren't government issued.

      it made me obsessed with coins as a kid! Each country has a couple of different designs, and can be found very far from the country they originated from. I collected a lot of them, but as we live in the Netherlands, 90% of the coins were just Dutch, German, Belgian or French. France has some of the pretter ones i think. I used to hate the belgian one with the king on it bc it was really common and it's just a lame design to have an old man on there when you could litterally have anything else (though our own coins also have the current queen or kings face on them).
      it's really cool to come across like an cyprus or lithuania coin though. I don't think i've ever seen/noticed one!

    On the Euro coins, one side is the "common side" which is on every coin, and the other side is the "national side" which each country's central bank can put whatever they want on the coins they mint. The German coins have the Federal Eagle, the Irish coins have the Celtic Harp, the Spanish coins have the King of Spain. You can spend them in any country regardless of what country they're from. It would've been nice if they'd done the same with the notes, one side common, and the other side national, rather than having them universal.

      It’s pretty obvious if you paid attention in the beginning. They can’t put real landmarks on Euros because whatever countries landmarks make it onto the higher denominations might been seen to be better than the landmarks printed on the low denominations. They fix this by putting real landmarks on worthless notes, so there’s no favoritism or perceived ranking, and there’s no additional risk of counterfeiting.
