  • We love corn on the cob, but don’t like the hassle of typical methods of preparation. Put your microwave to work to make delicious, perfectly-done corn on the cob.

    We are empty-nesters, so preparing smaller portions of food has now become our habit. We love great corn-on-the-cob, but the typical way of preparing it by boiling it in a pot of water is a hassle!
    Our friends Bruce and Diane saved the day when Bruce stopped by to share his fresh harvest of sweet corn from their garden. As great as that was, it was even better that Bruce shared his and Diane’s method of preparing a couple of ears at a time!
    Simply place 2 ears of shucked corn in a ZipLok® or bread bag with a couple of teaspoons of water and cook for 5 minutes. DON’T seal the bag, but fold it over so as to retain the moisture/steam in the bag. When the time is up, open the bag carefully and slide corn out and enjoy with your favorite condiments! Thanks to Bruce and Diane!
    If you don’t like the idea of using a plastic bag (we’ve never had any problems with food-grade bags, but it’s YOUR choice!), here’s an alternative paper towel method. Wrap your shucked ear of corn in a moistened paper towel so that it is entirely wrapped. You’ll need to cook 3 to 4 minutes per ear of corn being cooked. Unwraps and dress the corn with butter and salt, or other toppings such as lime juice, butter, and cilantro!
    We really enjoy simple eating, preparing meals with only a few ingredients, so you can taste each thing in the recipe. This is one of the simplest of all, and don’t you just love it when you can JUST DO IT YOURSELF?

    I put the cobs in the microwave completely green. The whole unit, covering leaves and silks. They steam in their own little envelope. The green leaves provide enough water and keep the steam in. I find that to be the easiest.

    Even easier is to microwave the corn before shucking. Then use a hot pad to hold the ear, cut off the thick end toward the base, and squeeze the end with the silk. The husk and silk will slide off.

    Thanks for all of your great tips.
    I microwave my corn, too, even though I think steaming is the healthiest way to go. l put it in the microwave just like it is, keeping the silk and leaves on it, and microwave one ear for 3 minutes. Peel back the leaves one at a time and it cools down pretty quickly... and, l leave the stalk on it for a handle. 🙂
    Happy eatin', y'all!

      Same here! Makes cleaning the ears so much easier, saves on plastic bags and paper towels and is absolutely delicious. The only thing I'd add is that if the outer leaves are dry, run them under some cold water for a few seconds first. Been cooking them this way for years.

    Once it's done, dump the little bit of water out and then throw in a TB or so of stick butter and reseal bag for a minute or two. Butter will melt and you can move the corn around in the bag to coat evenly before you take the corn out. Voila, buttered corn :)

    That is what I have been doing for a couple of years now. The corn tastes better than any other cooking method. I use silicone bags. This is the way to go for a few ears of corn. Takes too long if you are doing lots of corn.

    Love this! Shout out to Maggie! Do you have tips on how to keep garbage disposal from smelling?

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      YES!! Use powdered Borax. Run water for just a few seconds to get the drain area wet. Then sprinkle in a generous amount of Borax and flip the switch on then off quickly so it will throw the powder around inside the drain. Let it sit for 30 minutes or so, then run the disposal with water running. Check the smell. If it's what you were hoping for, AWESOME. If not, repeat. Looking forward to your next comments. I find it’s not necessary for the plastic bag. I simply peel off a few outer layers..not many..…just the looser ones, run under water for a second, cut off the stalk end with a few rows of kernels, leaving the top alone..silk and remaining leaves intact. Microwave 5 minutes…let cool a minute. Take a paper towel folded over a few times into a small square to use to protect your fingers. Then squeeze the top of the ear through the cut stalk end. It slides right out silk and all nice and clean. 😁🌽

    If you take the corn on the cob with the shuck on it and microwave for 3-4 minutes then take it out and take a knife and cut off the end and squeeze the small end and the cob comes out of the shuck and then butter them and eat. By doing it this way you have no silk on it. If you cook two cobs 7-8 minuets. This is the way Sweet Corn Charlies here in Indiana tells us how to do it. take a knife and cu

    There are many ways to prep corn on the cob, but if you are going to microwave it is best to wrap each ear in a damp towel (paper or other) and nuke it for about 2-1/2 minutes at most depending on your oven's wattage. 5 minutes is way too long unless you have a really substandard oven and NEVER cook things in a plastic bag. Bags tend to melt and / or outgas which will ruin the flavor.

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Milord, I agree on the cook time. We cooked two heads of corn for 5 minutes, or 2-1/2 minutes per head, and got great results. We've never had a problem with the bags melting, and we too use a damp paper towel in the bag to steam, cook, and moisturize the corn all at one time. Thanks for writing! Best, DFJ

    an easier way to butter the corn is spread butter on bread, wrap the bread around the corn and just rotate the cob on the bread.

    Way too time consuming and too much work. We put the corn with all husks on except the loosest outer leaves. Put two in the microwave as is for about 6 minutes. Grab the ears with a heat proof pot holder and cut the bottom off just above the first kernels . Then squeeze the ears out of the husks at the tapered end. All strings will come out with the husks. Corn will be done and ready for buttering and eating.

    I would definitely wash the ear before cooking. I also prefer to NOT use a typical ziplock bag as I don’t want the plastic to leach into my food. I’d use a covered glass dish in the microwave.

    use the microwave method. it's fast (4 min per ear). no shucking, peeling, etc. after microwaved, cut it at opposite end of silk. it'll slide right out. USE POT HOLDERS, ETC. VERY HOT.
