This is a tutorial for people who are not licensed hair dressers and doing their own hair at home ~ I hope I can help anyone out there who may not want to use bleach to achieve beautiful blonde hair.
Since my "how to remove color from hair" video, I have had SO many questions about developer and what developers are best for blondes and so forth. I am hoping this tutorial can help you understand how developers work and which ones are best based on your natural hair color. The lighter the hair, the lower developer you will need. The darker your hair - the stronger developer you will need. You mix in the developer with the hair color you want. Here, I used a hi-lift blonde hair color, mixed with 30 developer. This is how you lift your hair, while adding the blonde tone to it. This is a way to bypass the bleaching process. You can also use this process to tone your hair to a beautiful blonde color as well, after using bleach. The possibilities are endless!

▼ Cool Ash Blonde Hi-Lift Permanent Creme Hair Color
▼ 30 Developer
▼ Shimmer Lights Purple Shampoo by Clairol
All available at Sally's Beauty supply.
▼ Mix 1/2 a cup of color together with 1 cup of developer.
▼ Put color all over your ROOTS ONLY.
▼ Let sit for 15 minutes and check how the hair is lifting. Put a shower cap over top to lock in the heat to help the color develop.
▼ Let sit another 20-30 mins or a bit longer until you reach the desired color.
▼ Rinse out with purple shampoo, condition as usual, dry hair.
▼ Voila, you are done.
For beginners - do not use box dye with developer! It already comes with developer. Just use the box dye on your roots if that's what you choose to get. I get this question a lot.

It means we create the things we fear so it's important to release fear and be positive about any thing or process you do. Also you can find olaplex on amazon now which is a lovely thing. I prayed my hair would stay healthy if I lightened it and started to see signs around olaplex so I looked it up on amazon. ca and the olaplex traveling stylist had a ranking number of 7,777. I absolutely love this. I have bleached my hair before and it literally killed it. It’s been years. But now, when I came across this video, I decided to give it another go. Absolutely NO regrets! My hair is soo soo light without the harsh bleaching !! It does work !!! Follow her tips !! She is accurate. If you have no patience, bleach is the way to go… but if you love and want to save your hair from falling out, this video is the way to go. And no, I agree 100% that not all salonist know any better. How to starts at 4:45
Mix colour starts at 6:15
Add developer starts at 7:00 *Mix well!*
(1 :2 ratio
i.e. 1/2 cup colour to 1 cup developer or 1 spoon colour to 2 spoons developer)
*Apply shower cap.* Check at 40 minutes. Do touch-ups if needed. Add 15 minutes more.
Wash out in shower and use purple toning shampoo.

Your natural hair is gorgeous! Just saying. Very warm brown. You could always consider doing those balayage or ombre too. Those techniques bring a blonde look without getting near the scalp.

Nice video! The developer depends on the goal color... 10vols will lift just one tone ,or deposit if wanting to darken; 20vols 2 tones, 30 vols 3 tones, 40 vols 4,5 tones.. if you are a level 5 (light brown) or higher you need the 40 .. if you are a six ( dark blond) or lighter , it depends ond the color you want.. in your case you are a 6 ( dark blonde) or maybe a 7 ( medium blonde)... and with 30 you got a 9. it would be lighter if you hadn’t put the gold on it.. because of that it gave you a 9.3 instead of a 9.0 . 😘

Hi Missy! Your hair looks GREAT btw. Quick question - My natural hair color is a light ash blonde, but I have been going to the hair salon for a few years now to achieve a brighter, non-platinum blonde look. Yesterday, I decided to try touching up my roots myself using a similar technique as you in order to match my already dyed hair color. I used a combo of three different dyes: 1 oz. of Clairol Professional Creme Permanent High Lift in Neutral Blonde, 3/4 oz. of Lightest Neutral Blonde and 1/4 oz. of Gold-Neutral Blonde High Lift (=2 oz. total) with 4 oz. of Salon Care 20 volume creme developer. I left it on for 30 minutes, then shampooed and conditioned my hair. However, my roots turned into a pale orange. I went back to Sally's and they suggested I use Wella Lightest Ash Blonde toner to correct the orange color, but it only helped a tiny bit. What advise do you have to correct the orange color? Should I have used a stronger developer or used a cooler toned hair dye? Thank you!!

If your scalp does that its cause you are allergic to the bleach you are using you need to find a different one, i am a allergic to splat bleach but i can use any other bleach but that one
Yes I'm allergic to bleach I tried bleaching my hair and my hair turned outjust like your head did when you bleach their hair so yeah I'm allergic to bleach and I'm 17 years old and yeah and it's been hard because I can't who's my hair and it's been very difficult because everyone that my hair sold for slicks so long now and I just got in the house and my mom won't let me brush my hair so when I'm going to try to do is I'm watching your video so that is why it's going to be a little easier without bleach and I just hope that really like not that hard to do it myself so I'm going to be watching your videos a couple times and don't worry I will like and subscribe so that would make your day I just really want to thank you for doing this video and I'm Katie so bye

Greaaat video thank u so much! I have tried a strand test of My Age Ash Blonde Hi-Lift on my roots and it turned my dark brown hair orange! I used a 40 developer and Olaplex (which dilutes it to a 30) and applied the colour twice but it’s still an orange light brown/dark blonde. I was hoping the ash tone would remove my brassy undertone :(. The second problem is that the rest of my hair is bleached to a very light blonde and the colour strand test i did touched the bleached part somehow, and turned it green. So how do you avoid touching the bleached hair which sucks in the blue base from the colour? I really hope you can help me out! Thanks again!

Thank you for the video! I am on Accutane right now and I can’t bleach my hair because it will just fry it while it’s already fragile. My hairstylist recommended using color instead of bleach and I had never even heard of it before 😳 so naturally I go to TH-cam to check it out 🤣

I'm allergic to bleach.. I bleached my hair for YEARS (15-20 something) going through lots of different colors. At around 23 I bleached my hair as usual and the next day found a patch of hair missing. Oh chemical burn right? Nope, my scalp was not red or burning at all when that happened (i'd only used a 20 volume) never had experienced chemical burn or reaction in the past even with 40 vol and over time of NOT bleaching or dying the roots that patch stayed, didn't grow back, grew in size (baldness) and I started developing more patches of hair that grew in size over time even though I stopped processing my roots. O_O It's as if bleach and dye gave me alopecia (which is an autoimmune "disease" btw. I went raw vegan a couple years later for just a week and the hair started growing back and continued to grow back. Now I will only bleach my ends and try to use a ppd free or more natural dye at the roots. Scary stuff. When I dye I now dye with coconut oil underneath and am purchasing a scalp conditioner that reduces anti-inflammatory responses...hoping that never happens again...

MG G ~ great question! Hi-lift is a stronger formula than regular hair dye :) so it will get your hair lighter than a regular blonde dye.

Ok but literally I’ve been blonde naturally my whole life. Come summer when I was a kid and young teen my hair would turn platinum from the sun. I’m 18 now and I’m going to UA In Arizona. I have never seen this much sun in life and I’m outside a lot more in my everyday life. But my hair getting darker and I have no idea why. To the point where people now call me out for being a fake blonde when I say that I am blonde. I have no idea what’s going on but I’m not ready to go brunette. great video! I am a professional and I do know that chemical allergies are a very real and now sadly very common sight. Even my fellow professionals have become sensitive gradually just from constantly dealing with it. Check out my video on how to go blonde with no bleach. Use a base breaker before to lift your hair 2 shades and deposits some cool tone. Then throw on a high lift color with double 40. High lift color can lift 5 levels but only when mixed with 40vol using 30vol is not the common standard because it does not give much lift. Always remember regardless of the directions that 1hr is always the best for high lift I tried 45min and it wasent enough.

I was looking your video because I’m thinking maybe sometime in the future I will dye my hair blonde but the problem is, I have a very thin hair so I don’t want to use bleach because it might destroy it. My hair color is dark brown but because my hair is very thin, it might help to lift it more, hope I’ll manage to go to platinum blonde with 30 developer and the hair dye. And maybe a toner so to get rid of the orange/yellow color

I went to Sally's about a week ago, had strawberry blonde/ginger hair, more orange then blonde, and wanted to go blonde. I am so...so blessed to have come across your video. Unfortunately, I have neglected my hair. For the mere reasons I either have to pay our bills or my medical visits. I cried not having to be able to get my hair done at a salon. I've been blonde since 2008. At the later years I would be disappointed for the reasons hair stylists weren't caring about my hair color and rather yet just to collect $200 of servicing. I would cry my hair was looking like crap as if I'd say this is what I paid for???? Your an angel 😇. You help us people who are middle class struggling in life. Omg !!!will this work for me I have dark root I love my blonde I hate bleaching I have to take Tylenol and do so much before I bleach alway bleach twice
Didn’t work in my hair, just turned it light brown (but I’m African American). But I did want to give a thumbs up and encourage someone to try it because I had NO symptoms. It still smelled like bleach and slightly burned when touching my skin but no burning hands and feet or trouble breathing with nausea. Thanks again!!!!

The developer is what lightens the hair the bleach boost it a lot but you can lighten it slowly with just developer.

I’m going to try this. You made this look really easy. Every time I go to the salon it’s like I need a sign that says I want to be blonde. Don’t ask me any other questions LOL it just confuses me and I just want to be blonde. I want color, no highlights, no depth, all one color. So I’m going to give this a try. We have a Sally’s that we can buy from so I will run in there and get some product and come home and try it. Thank you for the video

I want to lighten my roots, so I did a patch test on a small section of my hair. I applied the highlift colour only on the newly grown root area. I used Wella Koleston Perfect Special Blonde in the shade 12/81 mixed with a 30 volume developer. I have previously highlighted hair and the hair turned purple in the places where the highlift color had touched the already highlighted hair. Has this ever happened to you?

I’m here during Covid-19. My fiancé could only get blonde box dye with no bleach. I have medium brown hair and Now my hair is orange after one box lol. I’m considering doing another round because fortunately I have another box in light ash blonde the developer is 30 volume so hopefully it will lift more.
That's what I'm trying to do I have a medium brown hair color and trying to go maybe a light ash brown I have a couple boxes of hair color that's ash brown highest level of blonde I'm wondering if I apply that to my hair twice will it work let me know

Pey Squires i am also allergic! Ion is ppd free!! After years of dying my hair box black i developd an allergy searched for 2 years on how i could find a way to dye my hair i finally decided to try the ion demi permanent color and have no reaction at all with it! I have ended up in the hospital 4 times over my hair dye allergy and have not had a single issue with the ion demi permanent line. They even have a permanent ppd free line but i have yet to try that. But from my experience it has worked great and i havent had a reaction at all been dying my hair with it for a year so far!

Love it! Would this method work instead of bleaching before applying a fantasy color such as Pravana Vivids? My hair is naturally a light/medium brown & I've used box dyes & some products from Sally Beauty for dark hair to go purple but they never come out as bright as I want. I've been thinking of bleaching but I'm kind of scared since I've never done it before but this isn't as intimidating. lol

Yes I get rashes all over my body and my air ways close up and it makes me so fucking sad cos I need my hair lighter for colours 😭😭😭😭 so I feel you on a soul level in the intro
I used to do this when I was younger and always wondered why anyone with blonde to medium brown hair would want to use bleach. But a year ago, I came back to bleaching it. I'm naturally dark blonde, but for the pastel silvery lavender color I want, when I try doing it with high lift dye, it never really works. The pastel shades just don't stick to my hair at all. It's not because the hair doesn't get light enough, but because the hair won't be "fragile" enough to allow the pigments to stick to. That's not a problem everybody has, but my hair - even though it's fine - is just so soft and healthy even if it get's dyed, that it can't absorb any pigment from direct dyes at all. If I just wanted to be light or even platinum blonde, any high lift dye would do the job perfectly, but not for the color I prefer. (For anyone who's wondering: my hair still feels super-soft now that it's bleached, it doesn't break or split or tangle at all and it is super shiny.)
But I am glad that you show this method to your audience because it is a great alternative for anyone who struggles with breakage or dull hair caused by bleach (and of course for those who are - like you - allergic to bleach). If your hair is naturally more on the fragile or dry side, high lift dye will be way better for you than bleach.
Hi!!! I used a high lift blonde colour in my roots I'm a dark brown. Now my hair is a coppery colour at roots and it's a line 🙄 now I can't tone colour I've been told but I don't know how to lift it more???
