the clave was crossed at the beggining,and is to overanalyzed,latin music you just feel and play.
This is Cuban music flowing straight out of the Afro-Cuban rumba and liturgical yoruba drumming, of which Pedro - a standard bearer for Latin percussion that my father, the late Ramón "Mongo" Santamaría, acknowledged and lauded as the real deal late in his life, when Pedro played at a tribute to my father in 2001, a year and a half before he died. This Afro-Cuban root, as my father and countless others bore witness, is where the lion's share of the music packaged as Latin comes from. Gústele a quien le guste, y pésele a quien le pese. The great Tito Puente himself, may he rest in peace, famously said back in the 90s that when Cuban musicians came to the US, other exponents of Latin music would have to go back to school. Direct quote. Apart from my father's clear authority, I've been steeped in this stuff myself for the better part of 40 years. One can say one doesn't get it, but to disclaim this kind of heavy, deep Afro-Cuban groove as "not what Latin music is about", is to betray ignorance and also to reveal why this music could only have come from Cuba, where despite racism like that of most other slavery-based societies, the musical forms have always embraced and been heavily indebted to the African roots and, unlike elsewhere, acknowledged as such.
PS this is the rumba clave they are basing this groove on, not the son clave ubiquitous in most non-Cuban-made Latin music. Ironically, the rumba guaguancó sections of many a non-Cuban salsa recording have the rumba clave on the exact wrong side, crossed as you say. Be aware that the four people on this stage are constitutionally incapable of being "crossed", or on the wrong side of the clave, by virtue not just of origins (for two aren't Cuban) but of being diligent students, for decades, of the Afro-Cuban roots music that spawned most forms generically known as Latin today.
