The Mysterious Mr Elgar. Episode 15 - The Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar

  • How to win friends and influence people! They say great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget. Well, not if you're Edward Elgar. He counted up his friends. He gave them each a theme tune. He threw in an enigma. And he dazzled (and mystified...) generations to come.

I once read that, as a child in school, E.E. was asked by a teacher: “What’s your name?” he replied “Edward Elgar.” The teacher, offended, told him: “It’s ‘Sir’”. E.E. prophetically replied: “I’m sorry, Sir Edward Elgar!”

we played Nimrod in high school concert band, with no string players. Our band teacher explained the origin that the Variations were about Elgar's friends and nobody knew who Nimrod was. The name sounded like an insult but the piece was so warm.

Unfortunately, the pandemic canceled the concert and I was a little disappointed. But I still have my second violin part so I can still have a little bit of Elgar in my heart.
Edit: I wonder what the next piece you are working on next

Brilliantly done! I have also read that throughout his life Elgar was prone to exaggeration, and after his death some of his closest friends speculated that the “enigma“ in this was just another one of his exaggerations meant to exasperate people as they searched to solve the puzzle. My favorite theory, though is the one that you propose. “Friendship” makes the most sense in context of what Elgar’s circle of friends meant to him and his ability to achieve what he did with so little formal background. Thank you, and Cheers!

Thank you for making these videos. I never thought that such beautiful music could be made even more beautiful. Adding some context to this piece really makes me love it so much more. I wish everyone could experience a love as beautiful as Elgar's love for Augustus Jaeger. It makes me cry every time I hear it.

5:35 Another piece in time signature 1/1 is the scherzo of Borodin's second symphony. I've heard it said that Borodin chose that ti,e to emphasize the breathtaking speed of the movement.
