Honestly Kim is one of my favorite female characters in TV of all time. I feel like they compensated for their mistakes in BB by dedicating the time and effort into her character.
Kim Wexler, Ignacio Varga, Chuck McGill, Howard Hamlin, and Lalo Salamanca became characters every bit as compelling and fully realized as the legacy characters from _Breaking Bad._ This show really did achieve the impossible, and it was a joy to go along on that journey.
I thought it was at its best when it was furthest away from doing BB fanservice tbh. S1 ep. 1 ending with a close-up of ZOMG Tuco was one of its worst moments imo. But they did use that to introduce Nacho who was the most interesting character imo
I really hope she gets an Emmy now that the show is over. I don't think she will because of how hard HBO and Showtime have been campaigning, but I think she has by far been the best lead actress in years since Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black (although Zendaya has also been phenomenal as Rue Bennett).

FINALLY! Didn't think you guys would ever do an analysis of Kim Wexler. My favourite character of the series. And just as I hoped, it was pretty solid. Thank you!
Since we kind of knew where Jimmy/Saul was headed, Kim was basically the protagonist of the series, a true study in what an unfair society can do to a good person with bad company. Kim always wanted to do good, but she hated how the powerful stepped on the weak, so she was all for Saul's shehnanigans in order to restore balance without realizing how oportunistic he was. This is one of the best written females characters in the history of television, beautifully executed by Rhea Seahorne, and everyone in Hollywood should take her as example on how a strong woman is also a vulnerable woman... Thanx, girls!!! Great as usual!!!
Always good to see more discussion around Better Call Saul, which is very under appreciated imo. I can't believe I haven't seen Rhea Seehorn in more stuff since after this performance.
Fun Fact: All the episode titles in Season 1 end in the letter "O" except Alpine Shepherd Boy (2015). It was originally titled "Jello," but they were not allowed to use that trademarked name.
Such a well rounded character. Has serious legal talent and work ethic but puts it in jeopardy cuz of personal flaws and the occasional poor judgment. And played with so much depth and perfection by rhea perlman.
Usually, it takes me a while to fall in love with characters. Just like in real life relationships, it takes a while get to know them and what they're about. But Kim I loved right off the bat. And not just because of Rhea Seehorn's superb acting (though that was a massive part of it!) There was something about her sharing a cigarette in some dark parking garage with Jimmy that made me think, 'Oh yeah.... Im gonna love her...' 😊 I think its so cool when actors can bring something to the show that makes the writers and creators rethink that character's trajectory completely. Just like Aaron Paul as Jesse, Kim wasnt supposed to be a constant character and she was only meant to be in a few episodes. And what a brilliant choice to keep her ❤
I'm actually surprised that the DA did not go for some jail time for Kim. We also never found out whether Howard's widow sued Kim, although Kim had no money and had resigned from the Bar before they could kick her out.
My favorite character in the Breaking Bad universe. As a lawyer who started all very empathetic and wanting to “do good” you slowly lose some of your morals when tou realize how ungrateful people are
What about leaving your man at a bad time and living the merry life being married to another man. And also, confessing only when she is reminded how bad she was?
@@saeeshtendulkar Their actions led to an innocent mans murder and defamation, she couldn’t be enabled by Jimmy anymore, and eventually she took full responsibility for her actions
I couldn’t LET myself get attached to Kim for the longest time, because I knew as soon as she and Jimmy became a couple…there was a target on her back.
Love Kim Wexler and how immaculately and subtly Rhea Seehorn plays her... but I do wonder why she's so loved while Skyler White is so hated. She's flawed and can be irritating, but hate?? It's a strong sentiment to have for her. I suppose that Better Call Saul's equivalent character to Skyler is actually not Kim, but Chuck.
Skylar got the unjustified hate because too many people didn't realize Walter is just fucking evil and were rooting for him to win. They think Skylar was getting in the way of this totally badass kingpin and ruining the fun. They completely missed the point. Kim, on the other hand, participates in a lot of Jimmy's antics. Sometimes she even goes beyond what even Saul is comfortable with. The same people who hated Skylar liked Kim because it was a question of how much they got encouraged the shows' antiheroes.
An easy explanation would be that Skyler was an obstacle to Walt's path becoming drug kingpin Heisenberg. In a sense, she was spoiling all the fun for us viewers. Whereas Kim was more and more the driving force behind Jimmy's downfall. Also I feel like they put much more thought and nuance into her as a character, the same goes for Chuck which is why he might not be as hated as Skyler (also sexism ofc).
yea it's weird when ppl try to argue that Kim was somehow a "better partner" than Skyler. when she ultimately enabled his worst qualities that led to their ruin. good partners also have a moral conscience and aren't narcissistic psychopaths in denial
So wait, has The Take ever done a video essay on, what is it about narratives that hammers in the message, that a person can only have either a romantic partner, or friends, I.E. that's their only choice in life, (granted it's more like, why is it that finding a romantic partner is what proves a person's worth? Especially if they're a loner I.E. have trouble making/keeping friends) &ironically groups of friends are what can help &save people from toxic partners(&essentially abusive marriages)
Hard disagree here. When Kim was given an opportunity by Cliff to advance justice for the underserved, she prioritized scamming Howard over it, and then made love to Jimmy while listening to Howard’s life fall apart. She isn’t good, she’s unlawful evil who occasionally does good.
I would love to see a glimpse into the lawsuit against her from Cheryl Hamlin. How many of her pro bono clients would write letters and speak on her behalf to show the good she's done.
Throughout the series I thought that both Kim and Ignacio Varga were the only characters they were completely good in a moral sense and everything they did was to protect the family they loved: Ignacio for his father and Kim for Jimmy. If only Ignacio lived through his ordeal he could’ve wound up with Kim in the end. Jimmy was too selfish for her.
Ignacio went out on his own terms, and as tragic as it was, it was the ending he chose to protect his father. In a season full of unforgettable moments, it was a standout. Looking back I really am in awe of what _Better Call Saul_ did. I really didn't expect it to live up to its predecessor, but in all honesty it surpassed _Breaking Bad,_ at least in my opinion.
I love Kim but I know one of these perspectives was coming from the women of the Take. Kim might start off as neutral good but midway she's chaotic evil. She hurts Howard not because she wants to help Jimmy or to fund her pro bono work but because it was fun for her. There's so many times she's given an out and she refuses. When Lalo resurfaces, when she's given that grant that would help with her pro bono she literally blows off to continue the con, the second time Jimmy tries to talk her out of it. She's the one that talks him into it. As Jimmy uses conning as a means to get his desired outcome. Kim uses seems to be addicted to it, she uses it as a drug ;needing a bigger and bigger hit each time. I think who Kim wants to be is her in the first couple seasons and who she is ,is her in the last later ones. And Jimmy was just the gateway to it.
