So sorry for you ! You are 35 Years too late to visit Berlin! Nowdays its just a celebration -party-Amusement going to Berlin. Before the Wall fell down and your home address was in Berlin, you must not go to military duty ! This fact and also the rent was the cheapest in whole Germany, that was because of the special status Berlin West had have! So living was really easy there and a lot of artists, musicians and all sort of crazy people lived there ! Me included 🛸🛸☮☮👼🏻👼🏻👹👹🎼🎼🎇🎇🎇🎇🤣🤣✨✨🎈🎈🔥🔥
Berlin has always been a different place than the rest of the country, whether you take the time of King Friedrich II. the Great, a King playing flute inviting artists and the exiled French playwright Voltaire and other persecuted French protestants to Prussia or while becoming a centre of industry and technology with companies like Borsig, Schwartzkopf, Siemens&Halske, Steinweg, AEG and many more, or a centre of entertainment with its famous UFA Studios in Babelsberg, the Berliner Philharmoniker, printers like Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, George Grosz, or so much more ... During the first one hundred years of industrialisation Berlin was exploding like so many other cities eg. London, Paris, Vienna, Munich, Prague, Milan, New York, Chicago ... in industrial activity as well as in size. Even if there isn't that much industry left in these places today it has left a significant mark on them by becoming centres of progress in many aspects. Could Berlin survive without Germany? No. Would Germany be the same without Berlin? Very probably not. The same applies to Bavaria and Munich as well as Austria and Vienna.
Mea culpa if i post it twice. 1. Germans open windows, most of europe does in the evening to make the house cool off. Cities are hotter than countryside or suburbs. There are ACs everywhere but it depends on the energy company you are with. If tis an expensive one... especially with now the digital meters.. There is also an easy solution to this for that lady: dont be a cheapskate and rent an apartment that has AC. But then the price for rent in Berlin with that kind of grand sights is way too high to the point you can basically rent a villa in the country side for a year and still pay only HALF of what it is for rent in Berlin. DONT get me wrong i love berlin but i like southern germany more. 2. you want the best pies/pastries you should visit the region around Aachen-Maastricht ( netherlands) and Belgian Limburg ( in Belgium). 3. German music scene in general is epic, doesnt matter if you are into hardstyle, heavy metal, Classic, folk, hardcore music, and so on. 4. Cash only... NOT REALLY in most stores you can use your creditcards... or download the store app and link your card to that. HOWEVER small shops may not have credit card option because of the A) INSANE fees on transactions ( upto 10+ euros and more depending which service the shop uses, which means they have to put that fee amount on products pricing them higher which drives away potential customers) B) the number of transactions. ( i have heard small shops are required to have at least 50-100 transactions a day.. also depends on shop and the service they are with... to be even eligible to be able to use credit card terminal and if they drop below that number well there is a penalty) 5. there isnt an anti-intrepreneurship, but there is a regulation for that because in the past criminal orgs used that way to launder money. there are also a crapton of startup locations ( Hanover, Bonn, southern Germany). So that point the x poster is making is 100% wrong. I know i worked highest echelons of the finance sector. 6. "bad cell reception".. meh it depends. if you want internet actual internet not that cellphone junk, its pretty fast. 7. Anti big tech? Nope another 100% factual incorrect. Musk is a special case because his cars are catching fire right left and center so yeah, if you wanna make a German or any person for that matter mad, you make shitty cars that catch fire ( note: all EVs have this potential but tesla takes the lead in the sheer numbers of this happening and its why people do not like EVs at all they prefer their diesel and gas powered cars). Yeah Europe isnt as fanatical for musk or billionaires as the US is ( well some of the US is ). 8. "high taxes" ROFL no, Germans DONT have high taxes. You want high taxes you go to Belgium where if you are single you pay 58% taxes on your salary if you are single, 52-56% if you are living together. Netherlands is not as high as Belgium but higher than Germans. There is a reason why Belgians and Dutch go shopping in Germany. great video but yeah that guy is in berlin and berlin is not Germany. its like most capital cities in any country.
As for music, are you only looking for hardstyle artists in Germany or are you feeling adventurous to venture into the Dutch and Belgian hardstyle/hardcore music scene? Some concerts venues that also post on the regular on youtube are: Q-dance, Masters of Hardcore, Defcon1, Reverze, Dominator, Thunderdome, and so on. Artists are, for example: angerfist ( excellent for working out), nosferatu, DJ mad dog, Dr peacock ( not as heavy as angerfist but the speed is there ), furyan, dj anime, Neophyte, tha playah to name a few. If you are looking for other genres and German bands, well heavy metal is very popular as well with many festivals ( If you like Metal Wacken is a great introduction). German bands: Scorpion, helloween, blind guardian, rammstein, avantasia, Grave digger, Powerwolf, wolfchant and many others. There are also mix matching of different genres like classical with folk and folk with metal and so on. Saltatio Mortis is a fun band not really metal more folk but they do their own thing.
@@MrLotrecht Pretty sure living in Berlin freed you from being drafted rather than making it a necessity to dodge it. ("must not" bedeutet das man es tunlichst lassen sollte, "nicht müssen" wäre "you don't have to")
James you say use A/C because of global warming, but from a logical standpoint you should do the exact opposite because of global warming. A/C units are one of the worst things for global warming. That and the energy costs are why we don't use them..
I live in Germany, I have AC as part of the heating and it's fully powered by solar. This year I had to use it on exactly 2 days... If your house is properly isolated you don't really need AC for most German summers. Yes for the 2-3 weeks of heat wave we get every couple of years it's really nice to have but for most parts it's really not that important. Now if everyone around the world uses AC we for sure will need it to in a decade or two, maybe even sooner. AC everywhere without renewables powering it is insane.
@@MustYouHaveAUsername I have an air to air heat pump in the UK for winter heating my well insulated house. I can use it for heating, cooling and drying. Last year and the year before I used it for cooling about three of four days in the year, that included when it was over 40°C. I used it as an air dryer a bit more but not much because in the UK the warm damp air in summer is worse than the hotter dry heat you get in many other countries. So is it worth paying for A/C just to be able to cool a house on the few days when it is really needed? Probably not.
@@lolermosskoss1834 that itself doesnt influence climate. but the energy it takes for doing that, when people could just open a window - that is the real problem.
Well said, but I would say it can still happen that you give them your best smile and your friendliest behavior and they STILL treat you, the customer, like garbage. My experience is that it's mostly a "neutral behavior" so they do their job, but are not recognozieable friendly or unfriendly. But of course I know those who are friendly and I sadly made the experience of unfriendly pieces of sh*t without having said anything bad or rude to them. I ALWAYS say "exccuse me" when I have a question and I ALWAYS say thank you. I'm not one of thise who just go with "HEY! BlahBlahBlah" but still, some people will be rude to you, no matter what.

1:24 - That picture is a pain for the eyes. We Germans love efficiency. And pumping hot air out of the window while new hot air is coming in is just cruel. Yes, it cools down the room, but it is dumb and heats up the world instead. Besides, Germans are not a bunch of puzzies.
@Alexander_Kale I can't believe I read this. You do know that the thermal energy from the cooled down air is just transported to another place right? Plus the energy you invest to achieve this physical process is turned into additional thermal energy, right? Do you believe that an AC is "destroying" thermal energy?
@@grieveromega6060 Of course not. But the world is not heating up because we are releasing more heat energy into the environment. It is heating up because we are changing the composition of the atmosphere. In case you have not noticed, there is this enormous heat source hanging in the sky that we call the sun. THAT is were the heat energy comes from, and that in combination with the atmosphere determines the average temperature. Reduce the co2 content in the atmosphere, and you reduce the trapped heat, local heat sources make ZERO difference to that. Increase the concentraton, and the temperature goes up, no matter how many local heatsources you kill. Yes. ZERO. That's not how this works.
@@Alexander_Kale 1) By running an AC, you release additional thermal energy into the atmosphere which you wouldn't do without AC (electric energy converts into thermal energy while running an AC). 2) Getting the electric energy to run a AC comes along with a lot of CO2 emissions globally. So you obviously don't understand physics and energy politics at the same time. Impressive.
@@grieveromega6060 Holy shit, man, did you even read what I wrote? Your original argument was solely about heat energy, not a peep about where the electricity comes from. For all you know, since she lives in Germany, the electricity comes from a wind park or solar plant. So no, that does not save you, stay on topic. And again, no, it does not matter how much heat you release locally on the planet. The equilibrium is determined by the atmosphere. Heat up the planet more, it will start radiating more heat. How much more heat is determined by the composition of the atmosphere. The number of local heat sources is irrelevant to the resulting number.
What do Berlin, London and Edmonton in Canada have in common? They are all close to the same latitude, about 52° north. Do people in Edmonton need A/C? People in the USA often do not realise how far north the UK and northern Europe are.
I had some pets (Chinchillas) and they literally die when they have temperatures above 25°C in their room. I don't have AC and guess what, none of them died during heatwaves. Insulation, blinds and lüften during the night and you're good.
TIL there's people who don't understand how windows and blinds work and that if you just open a window when it gets dark it gets cooler inside... humanity you can always surprise me with your stupidity
Yea it helps that our houses aren´t made of paper mache. It´s really not that hard to push through the two or three weeks a year where an A/C would potentially be useful.
No, we just think it's nonsense to heat up the climate even more with AC! Just turn on a fan and open the window at night and pull down the blinds during the day. How the US could be colonized, I can't get my head around after watching videos like this!
If you really think you are going to save the planet by not using AC, you need to go get your head examined. Also keep in mind, the US as a whole is a lot warmer than Germany, and a lot of people in Italy would LOVE to have more AC.
about the AC, from a German's perspective... Our houses are built different than most american ones. The outer walls are designed to keep the warmth in during winter, when it's cold. That also works with keeping the heat outside for a bit. It's built so that the heat seeps into the house at night, when it's supposed to be colder. For an even temperature. And no, it's not for "withstanding summer" it's mainly for keeping warm in winter xD So, like someone else already said, open the windows at night, close them shortly after the sun rises because that's when it starts to get hot. Open every window and room door for 15 minutes before bed time so it's cooled down a bit before you sleep. (just close the ones you don't need open before bed again xD) and keep the blinds down and the windows closed during the day. You can also put damp towels up on the window, it'll cool down the room a little. And yes, over the years (because of the climate change) it has gotten warmer in Germany and in newer buildings you can get ACs built in, but it's just not that common yet. Southern europe is different in that regard, so don't just lump everything together ;3 because, you know, different countries and cultures. Just because Germany is like that doesn't mean (eg) Spain is, too.
americans can't have windows open at night, because crime would probably go up un double digits. I'm cynical a bit, but it has some ground in reality :)
Schau dir mal die Temperaturkurve der Durchschnittstemperaturen in Deutschland der letzten 200 Jahre (oder länger) an. Wir bewegen uns langsam wieder in Richtung "normal".....;)
As far as our disdain for those billionaire tech bros is concerned: Has this guy actually ever taken a good look at what kind of people they are? Defending people like Bezos and Musk? Why would anyone with a conscience do that? Also, there seems to be a common understanding among Germans that there is no way to become a billionaire without being ethically and morally bankrupt.
My room is not very well isolated, but it never got hotter than 25°C. Humidity is the most important problem, and you fix that by ventilating at night and not staying in the same room the whole day.
Here in Spain we close the windows during the day and open them at night, despite the temperature is much higher than the ridiculous summer temperatures in Germany, I live quite good without Aircon!
I live in the warmest region in Germany (Oberrhein) and it actually gets up to 37°C here for some days but it is way more humid than lets say Albania (where my grandparents are from) so it really does feel very hot. And on those days the temperature only drops to about 23°C at night. Of course Albania is hotter overall but the difference isn't that massive except that the hot period lasts a lot longer in southern Europe.
ac is also a massive pollution issue, so i'd rather be a bit more hot and use a ventilator and have houses built energy efficient than worsen the local climate in addition to pollution
that first woman, just hit me straight with her Karen-Hand-Gestures. 2nd. Pumping hot air out of an open window in the summer is like shuffling water while standing in a lake
That people expect you to drink in Germany is BS, and if you driving a car even less (don't drink and drive) there might be people who act like they insist or say things like "Hey why don't you have a beer with us, just one, come on!" but guess what? Just say NO! if you don't want! It''s ok! And if someone still keeps bugging you or makes fun about you, AVOID that person, Problem solved!
you also throw in some CO2 and other emissions the AC produces and the oil/coal that has to be burned to produce the energy... it's literally trying to put out a fire with gasoline
@@la-go-xy it's actually the fastest growing sector of the German economy and the sector with the most start ups for like 6 years in a row now in Germany
@@Alexander_Kale That is not how AC works and it's also not a clever idea. You want to move the heat energy outside within the refrigeration circuit, and condense outside to release the energy. The outside unit gets warm, the inside gets cold, there is no air exchange. When the unit exhausts the hot air outside, there will be negative pressure in the room and you'll pull fresh air into the room which when it's coming from the outside is warmer than your target temperature. This has a severe impact on your efficiency because the more you cool, the more air is being pulled in which requires more cooling.
I have to admit his twitter post got me quite angry for the following reasons: This guys Points about Entrepreneur ship and billionaires is the reason America is what it is. Being able to become a billionaire is a mistake in the System: it destroys Meritrocacy Elon Musk has invented nothing that helps society: Paypal he bought himself in later but before it became famous. Same for Tesla which didnt have a decent new product in years completly overtaken by Chinese Car manufacturing when it come to E-Cars The reason our social state is so good BECAUSE we try to tax the rich (not even close to enough) instead of taking the money from the poorest. Start up dont really help the country they are a way rich ppl or ppl with rich backgrounds can creat a firm out of nothing bubble up its value and enrich the rich rarely do start up do good for society Using Cash instead of card is not primarily to dodge taxes (it is used that way but can only reasonably done by small businesses which when it comes down it are not the ones with the tax burden) but to protect privacy The same goes to AI, the way the models are trained and used infringes strongly on privacy and copyrighted material, and thats coming from someone studying computer science with a focus in Machine Learning And last but not least i hate the air ACs creat and personally never had a problem with german summers it will get worse in the longrun because of climate change so i might change my opinion on them I dont think we should let Crypto and Start up peeps direct our politics or we will go the same way america is going. Less controll over the rich and corporates will not make the live of the working class better. Trickle down is a lie!
Germany had more start ups per capita than the US for like the last 7 years.... and how do Start Ups not help society? They literally create a whole bunch of jobs.... people with jobs are usually spending more money than those without a job... meaning more business and more taxation which again leads to more economic growth etc etc etc... the problem with the silicon valley model was... most people tried to create a start up just to be bought by a bigger company and get a cash out... Germany had like 1200 Solar Energy start ups alone in 2023... that's all high paying jobs that affect multiple industries, generate a HUGE amount of economic movement and are future proof....
From personal experience I don't like air conditioning - it's like being inside a fridge and they produce very dry air too... I'd rather open the window/s, which costs nothing and let's in natural fresh air... 😂 David Fletcher Bradford UK
AC are definetly not good for the health! They are energy expensive and our summers are not that long so hot that we really need them so much. Better is to install Außenjalousien, that keep the warmth outside! Bio food was expensive in the first years but getting cheaper the more it gets common. Alcohol is a problem all around the world, in SK they drink so much, but we are getting more and more aware of this problem. I stopped drinking at the age of 30 and no one accused me for that when we go out. That with the Bargeld is correct, it‘s because of criminals. The problem with the service is easy for me, I am respectful to everybody, if s.o.means to be disrespectful to me, he doesn‘t get a tip! Yes Internet is quite bad, even in big cities! Tesla is hated because of Elon Musk who cares the hell about environment and the employees, same with Bezos and more! And it‘s not just related to Berlin! Living in the big cities is getting more and more expensive!
Bargeld is just better for privacy. I study computer science and a part of my studies is learning about data managment. The amount of data you can gain just by knowing how much a person spends where is crazy. And yes your banks have that information and yes they do sell it even though thats not technically legal.
I never hear that someone thinks starting a company is exploiting workers, maybe if you have super left friends in Berlin. It's nuts that Germans are big on safety. Maybe because we lost everything in ww2. So risking all your savings and a safe job to start a business is something a lot would almost look at like gambling.
Honestly, I can't remember the last time I *had* to use cash somewhere. Granted, I work from home and don't get around that much, but still... it has been years since my visa card wasn't accepted somewhere
While there are some "duh" points (and some that are very specific to Berlin) the man does seem like a bit of a libertarian sigma-grindset techbro. Basically, he'd probably fit in better in LA or Dubai.
If a billionaire would use it in a way beneficial for society I'm ok with that - despite being a bit left-leaning. They can address and tackle issues more directly and possibly more effectively than administrative institutions - provided that they listen to some experts instead of making up some theories about a problem on their own "wisdom".
the thing with the aircondition is, we didnt have much hot days in the year, the other thing is modern houses or old houses (altbau) have a good isolation, and get not so hot in the summer this year was my hottest room temperature 25°C, thats fine for me
You listen to Techno? i have 2 playlists. 1 is filled up with about 700 tracks of techno and the other has about 100 uptempo tracks. There are also local djs in the first playlist, they are from Frankfurt.
The difference in average alcohol consumption between the US and Germany is really negligible... you maybe don't see as many people drinking in public in the US... because it's banned to drink in public in literally most of the US
I'm glad I don't have AC and live in an old house underneath a few 200yo oak trees. it's always much cooler inside on warm days and warmer during the winter. A friend of mine who lives in Münster is always super shocked how cool it is here vs. her city apartment. AC is just unnecessary cost, hassle and gives me headaches. The only place I'm wishing for AC is in a crowded train when it's broken in the summer or when I'm in a traffic jam with my old car that has an issue with the heater never shutting off completely. Edit: Yeah most of those are very Berlin centric, but the hatred for giant corporations wanting to industrialize the - ever fewer - forests and untouched nature is widespread. Possibly a part of the socialism vibe of not wanting to help the super rich as they don't need the help. Just conjecture on my part though. It's mostly smaller very active groups rather than a majorities' opinion as those corporations also bring job opportunities with them and help the economy.
Who has the bigger drug problem, whether it's medication, coke or fentanyl?* If he had an American Express card, for example, I'm not surprised that he was turned down. Bush Jr. once said "France ("socialist") doesn't even have a word for Entrepreneur" (Entrepreneur is French).🤣 This guy should have been in Berlin or somewhere else in the 80s. Have you seen tent cities in DE? How do you know if someone is homeless? Just because he's sitting on the floor at the station? Do you know the German movie "Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo"? David Bowie not only appeared in it but also contributed the music to "Heros". *In 2023, the Federal Criminal Police Office registered 2227 drug-related deaths in Germany. In the USA, the country that suffers the most from illegal drugs in the world with almost 70,000 deaths per year, the mortality rate recently amounted to 314.5 deaths per million inhabitants. (Source Statista) Doing math: 26 in Germany per million inhabitants, 12 times higher in the US 🤔
Regarding the 500€ bills: They stopped printing and distributing them since 2018. They are, however, still legal and usable. That being said: It's compliance in a lot of retails, gas stations, ... to check any 100+ bills so they outright don't accept them sometimes. It is also the reason that most fake money comes in the form of 50€ bills. It's the best risk/reward spot for scammers.
You really should visit Berlin when they hold the 'Gay Pride Festival' at the end of June or the beginning of July - it's a truly amazing experience!!! I'm not gay but it's not about that - it's about freedom and peace and it's the best street party I've ever experienced in my entire 60 years of life!!! 😂
The point is, that AC ist one small, but mentionable reason for global warming. So ist is kind of illogical to use it. And by the way your body hast his very own way of cooling down. WE are warm blooded 😏
We still use cash because it's less expensive for the shop owner. They pay for the expenses of the banks, all the fees.. you have to buy or lease the card readers, etc. With cash, you do not have all of that. And no, it's not to avoid taxes easier xD Germans are also way, way less over the top with emotions than Americans. (Except maybe while driving xD) So someone might come off as grumpy for someone who's more attuned to that over the top but isn't actually grumpy.
yep, you are right- AC is a question of costs, I couldn't afford to install it (nor would I be allowed to. It's a rental home) nor could I pay for the electric bill.
The protests against Tesla aren't just because people hate billionaires. They built a factory that produces outdated expensive batteries and requires lots of resources especially water in a water protection area in one of the driest states in Germany - Brandenburg. Yes, the draught there may not look as bad as what people in the US have seen, but also we don't want what happened in California to also happen here.
Nah, it's mostly that Germany just isn't as hot as the US and for the longest time it would simply not have been worth installing one. That only became an issue in recent years. Germany is much further north than most of the US. The US-Canada border is roughly halfway through Germany latitude-wise.
@@Llortnerof Yeah, you're actually right. Additionally, we don't experience those long periods of extreme heat or cold during the year like they're common in the US. If (IF) the temp manages to get above 105°F (~40°C), it'll usually be over after a few days at most or at least we get a slightly lower temperature for a few days before it gets hotter again. In the US you partly have 115°F (~46°C) for weeks on end in some states like Florida or Texas.
I think that it is definitely the idea of environmental protection that plays a role, as it has traditionally never been as hot in Germany as in large parts of the USA.
15:55 i think it's especially the mix of different cultures, that clear the differences and show the similarities like the "no trash on the street" and such like
Always important to remember... neither in Germany (nor anywhere in the EU) nor in the US... Organic means fruits and vegetables are free of pesticides... just that certain pesticides can't be used... also none of the pesticides Monsanto/Bayer currently produces for the agriculture industry are banned in either country.... I WONDER WHY
The customer is king is a rule that has been implemented by rich people. Why should the customer be "King"? It is a giving and taking. They take the product you take the money. Its a trade.
Literally every office building and public building etc etc has AC, most houses build between 1911 and now are build to insulate heat and cold... if you don't understand how windows work we can't help you.... ACs are absolutely TERRIBLE for the environment, not only through the massive amount of energy they use but their heat exchange produces an astonishing amount of CO2... i would happily get rid of my AC... instead of buying an AC you could learn that Air is cooler during the night... so if you open your window when it gets dark it gets cooler inside... really not rocket science Also ACs produce moist air... which is black molds best friend which is why any rent agreement in Germany will have a clause about how often you should open your windows and for how long and what the room temperature should be... because if you get black mold as a renter.... YOU will have to pay to get it removed
How someone experienced customer service in germany depeds on where you are. The maybe nicest people in customer service are in Berlin, but everyone thinks they are the rudest, because they speak to everyone like you would to your best bro. Direct, with all the unnice truth and often offensive to make a joke, but on the same hand they would help you steel everything in the shop if you ask them. The other extrem in my experience is south germany, where they're talking to you like honey but hate everyone who is not from germany, from south germany, from the area, from the city or village they are from or their family. With a fluid change wich one is more important only to have a reason to hate you. But they would never let you know this.
Be honest, You WANT to be spotted! If you didn‘t wear your special hair ribbon, or whatever you choose to call it, harly anybody would recognize you at once.😂
Lies… I went to Germany this last time and walked around several cities without my headband and was STILL spotted quite a bit. Trust me, I thought people only recognized me by my headband, not the case apparently.
That guy again... Lehmann is a person that fits perfectly into American society and is a hardcore neo-liberal. He lacks the understanding how an economy actually works and mistakes good entrepreneurship in late stage capitalism with understanding economy. He's got a few valid points tho.

Bro, the reason why Germans have no AC is because it wasn't that hot in the past. It's a "new" thing for us to justify buying an AC. I have one. One like yours. That's the next thing. These mobile ACs are incredibly inefficient and runs up the electricity bill and to install a normal AC you have to own or get the ok from the owner of the property and on top of that have the cash to get one installed. I live in the same house as my Dad and my Grandma. Everyone has their own apartment. We want to get one installed for the whole house for years but then you'd also want to go the Wärmepumpen route (idk what it is called in English) and by then you'd need to get your ground evaluated. That costs 15k€ without a guarantee that you'd be even allowed to install one. After that you'd have to invest another 40-60k€ for the actual Wärmepumpe, AC and the installation. That is why we don't have AC as commonly as in the US. Edit: To the question about the 500€ bills. No, it isn't because it's drug money but because they were faked too often. Same with the 200€ bills. The most counterfeited bill is the 20€ bill I think but they can't get rid of a 20. And yes, Berlin is different than the rest of Germany. I hate it but to each their own.
First of all cash is freedom. If there is no cash there is no freedom, because anything that is not in your hand can be frozen. Thats why cash is so good.
as a German I also love ACs. But seriously, we don't live in the south of Europe and for the two weeks of over 25°C a year, it's simply not worth buying an AC for most people. Most people ventilate early in the morning and then close the shutters to block out the sun. But yes, if I ever build a house, I'll also have an AC integrated. To the mobil phone thing. Unfortunately, this is a thing that the government has approved. The corporations have been told that they should cover households with the network, not the country. That's why I can do Facetime in Kenya, in the middle of the bush and here in Germany I have to tell the company that I'm driving into Emsland in 5 minutes and won't be reachable there. the reason: wide area, sparsely populated..
LOL I'm in Germany. We have an AC. I don't use it because it makes me ill. I have no problems with sleeping in the summer. I just sleep naked without a blanket. No issues with sleeping at all. What i find is more a culture shock to me is that in America people don't have a heating system installed in most states. The reason that we do not use a AC, for sure is not that its too expensive. When we travel to another country in the South we always turn off the AC because its loud and thats the reason why i can t sleep. Not the heat.
Cash: the 500€ bill is NOT drug money. I prefere those bills, as it is the safest way to transport your money well hidden in special situations e.g. holidays, bargaining of any sort. Normal shops don’t accept them, asthe staff has to pay for a falsificate. Guess: Aldi mostly take them after validity check by a superior.
I think she didnt mean it like „get a better job brokies if you cant afford an AC“ I think she meant it like „spend your hard earned money on things that make you more comfortavle, thats what money is for“
Why smaller businesses don't have card readers is because they are expensive, not "to avoid taxes." (Some maybe do, but tax fraud is not worth sitting in for. The penalties can be harsher than for violent crimes sometimes...) Excluding the cost of the hardware itself, there are a bunch of monthly fees and terms you have to go with. If I remember correctly, the monthly fees are about 40-60€/month + 1-3% transaction fees per terminal. (40-60€, depending on whether the terminal is mobile or stationary.) That's why some only allow cards if the total is ~10-15€ or more. I mean, if you think about it, they have to pay to get less profit for pretty much the same service. (Excluding the comfort of paying not in Cash)
It never got that hot when I lived there. I'm from the Northeast US and summers are hot and humid. Most of the time Germany is cool and even in the summer it tends to be rainy.
I have got AC in my house. I did not use it for cooling within the last two years - no need for this. I like it for fast heating in winter times. I even do not use them when being in the US. I think the temperatures in American public rooms way to cold.
Am an avid listener of EDM (Prog Trance, Hardstyle, Lofi House, French House, Detroit Techno, Jungle, Drum & Bass, LDNB, Dark DnB etcetera etcetera). I've heard about Detroit House & Techno. I used to listen to a German Radio station called 'Nightline Radio'; heard some good stuff from there. I can't say if it was Berlin House though 🤔
4:31 that's true. even when someone sís visibly in pain, most germans go away. most often physically disabled people talk to me. otherwise people don't strike up convos.
We Germans just think that ACs are not good for your health, also the sound is annoying., also you can keep your apartment cool, by keeping the window closed during the day and close the drapes when the sun shines directly into the window... also, you can sleep naked
I would still have a rebuttal against the use of an air conditioner. Yes they are expensive, Yes the bill is expensive and Yes the summer is short in Germany. And add to all of that, they can make you extremely sick here in Germany. Because we have very humid air here, and that together with the AC just festers Bacteria and Mold faster then you can say AC.
Cash is the best way to control consumption. The simplest way is usually the worst. If you have the money in your hand and realize more how much you spend, you can better organize your financial budget.
Never missed an AC in my life ... and when I went to hotel rooms with AC, it was the first thing I turned off. I am used to this "heat-" conditions since 40+ years and so I don't mind the heat. Same with Coke! I don't need (or want) a ton of ice cubes in my coke glass. If the coke is "fridge-cold", I am fine with it as I am used to it! XD
I mean, the AC may be costly a bit, but its not like it's unaffordable for most people. Main cost is with the unit itself, not with the electricity afterward. Basically this means people do not have them, because the heat is not that high to spend money on AC, not because they can not buy/maintain it.
Whereabouts in Germany? I live in the UK and, at this latitude, even with the Gulf Stream, we really don't need AC in most buildings. Seriously, we do not - you'd probably use it about five days per year. Obviously, when we do (rarely) have a heatwave, we just have to man up. Americans don't seem to be able to do that.
I think germans just excepting that its hot. Of course there are flats in germany where you need to buy an air conditioning unit to sleep. Its like winter, the first few weeks feels cold, but after a while your body adjusts to the cold temperatures. It the same the other way around.
A very dumb statement from somebody who seemingly have no clue about Germany. Somebody who don't understand that a country only can funktion if EVERY work is done not only the nice paid once!!! So not everybody, dispite someone is working or not, will be able to afford a AC especialy on there powerbill. Don't judge others if you give a fuck about there lifes and there history!!!! I think the red flag under her nose say enough in this case.
Respectfully, there are only like 4 weeks of heat that is really exhausting. I live in a well insulated home. If it's 32°C outside, most rooms in my house will be 25°C, which still is a little too hot, but eh, it´s not that bad
James! PLEASE go to Potsdam, if you haven't been there, it's the capital of Brandenburg and it's really really beautiful, it's my favorite city (I live in Berlin, and haven't been to many other german cities actually😅) but I just love how almost all of Potsdam is incredibly beautiful. It's like day and night compared to Berlin. Because it has so much beautiful historical architecture. Also, I think it would be interesting if you would maybe learn a little about austria, because it's an incredible beautiful country, with the alps and the culture is so rich and the food is amazing. And it's the same language just with an accent and I think it's generally better understandable than the swiss accent which is like a completely different language.
For the Tesla factory are a few reasons they get hate, none of it is anti big tech. Elon tried his hardest to keep Unions from his factory, that might fly in america, but in germany that is just not something you do. You are not allowed to union bust and basically the whole German car industry is built with unions everywhere. Furthermore the factory got a lot of flag, when Elon tried to handwave away the issue of them draining a lot more groundwater than sustainable. I pers live in Berlin for almost 10 years now, failed to escape so far, but come from Saarland and I cannot really say big Tech gets much flag otherwise, at least not in my limited corner of the world.
The A/C issue-we have maybe three weeks a year when it would be nice, so why bother? I have lived my whole life without A/C; it's not necessary in Germany. Then you need to store the AC unit somewhere for the other 49 weeks of the year. That sounds like more problems than it's worth.
She has the most inefficient air condition i know. It blows hot air out, but (warm) air has also to come in to replace the blown out air. Yes it cools, but it wastes up to half the power. With best efficiency this leads to a COP factor of 2 or less. You need a air condition with TWO hoses (in and out)! To me a air condition should be efficient COP factors should be 5 to 6 (This factor tells about how much cooling/heating power it gets out of the electrical power: COP = 2: 2000Wh cooling from 1000Wh electrical power. COP = 6: 6000Wh cooling from 1000Wh electrical power. Hot nights are rare - 10 to 20 days a year - Houses are good insulated, we are able to switch off electrical devices and to "lüften" early in the morning. Also houses are made with brick or stone, we have a cellar which can get the cold from the earth so it is cool in the basement. Newer (slight luxury) houses have automatic air systems and/or a ceiling which can heat and cool. The air system saves you around 10% in winter as it transfers the heat from the air outtake to the air intake ("Kreuzwärmetauscher") Most new "Wärmepumpe" (Heat pump) can also cool - it replaces the gas/oil heater and is more efficient. In summer we like to have Air condition, but in Germany it is not worth the price. Also the landlord may not allow it.
ACs were in Europe in general not a thing (with a few exceptions). In the US but also some hot Asian (and other) countries had those also only for few spots (usually more touristic ones). In the 21. century this changed more and more. Since then the AC is on the raise (also in Germany but since the climate is less 'urgent' than in many hot countries it spreads slower). I am in an old 'Gruenderzeit' building in Berlin which means its in summer less hot and in winter less cold as base (especially true if you are on a low level). In ordinary aparments which most countries/cities have the situation if of course more serious if it is hot (or cold). The customer service in Berlin is not different to the customer service in NY. And in general the customer service is not unfriendly - thats just bullshit. Most are nice. And in Berlin the 'Berliner Schnauze' is in decline (which liked to comment on and with the customer which could be seen as rude but usually was just an own kind of smalltalk). The customer service in Germany in general is usually friendly - every other stereotype about that it is not is just wrong. It is just often still a bit more casual depending on the context (which also is true for most of Europe). You have this more rude customer services still more in some less developed countries in Europe. Apart from that, people should learn to focus on relevant things, irrelevant if in the US or Europe or anywhere else. Does a customer service actually does its job? Thats more relevant than the attitude.
MOST of These 17 “culture shocks” seem very specific to Berlin haha! But maybe I’m wrong. What do you guys think?
( i have heard small shops are required to have at least 50-100 transactions a day.. also depends on shop and the service they are with... to be even eligible to be able to use credit card terminal and if they drop below that number well there is a penalty)
5. there isnt an anti-intrepreneurship, but there is a regulation for that because in the past criminal orgs used that way to launder money. there are also a crapton of startup locations ( Hanover, Bonn, southern Germany).
A/Cs pump cold air in and hot air out that's even hotter than outside
I live in Germany, I have AC as part of the heating and it's fully powered by solar. This year I had to use it on exactly 2 days... If your house is properly isolated you don't really need AC for most German summers. Yes for the 2-3 weeks of heat wave we get every couple of years it's really nice to have but for most parts it's really not that important. Now if everyone around the world uses AC we for sure will need it to in a decade or two, maybe even sooner. AC everywhere without renewables powering it is insane.
I would answer the lady she should not be such a Mimi.
We have a saying in germany that explains a little bit the customer service thing. "The customer is king but a king also has manners"
BlahBlahBlah" but still, some people will be rude to you, no matter what.
i don't get the need for someone to be nice... my focus when i call customer service is to get my problems resolved as quickly and easily as possible... couldn't give 2 sh**s if they call me whatever words they choose as long as my problem is fixed

We Germans love efficiency. And pumping hot air out of the window while new hot air is coming in is just cruel. Yes, it cools down the room, but it is dumb and heats up the world instead.
Besides, Germans are not a bunch of puzzies.
Anyone who says stuff like "it heats up the world instead" unironically has no right calling other peple dumb.
Germans can accept the heat

What do Berlin, London and Edmonton in Canada have in common? They are all close to the same latitude, about 52° north. Do people in Edmonton need A/C? People in the USA often do not realise how far north the UK and northern Europe are.
Which heat are y'all talking about?
I had some pets (Chinchillas) and they literally die when they have temperatures above 25°C in their room. I don't have AC and guess what, none of them died during heatwaves. Insulation, blinds and lüften during the night and you're good.
TIL there's people who don't understand how windows and blinds work and that if you just open a window when it gets dark it gets cooler inside... humanity you can always surprise me with your stupidity
exakt das - ich wohne unterm dach und hatte auch nie ein problem xD
And no, it's not for "withstanding summer" it's mainly for keeping warm in winter xD
So, like someone else already said, open the windows at night, close them shortly after the sun rises because that's when it starts to get hot.
ACs are a huge producer of CO2 and other emissions... fighting fire with gasoline is a bad idea
americans can't have windows open at night, because crime would probably go up un double digits.
@@LoFiAxolotl Such a German thing to say. And no that is not a compliment.
@@Alexander_Kale sorry that basics of global warming offend your sensitive stupidity and you rather kill our planet then learn how to open a window...
Nobody has ever gotten rich from honest work.
Most Germans would probably want to be well off and no need to worry. But getting richer and richer for it's own sake is insane
To cool down with AC you head up the air outside, what a clever idea.
you also throw in some CO2 and other emissions the AC produces and the oil/coal that has to be burned to produce the energy... it's literally trying to put out a fire with gasoline
That's how AC works, yes. Here is another one. To cool down your food in the fridge, it heats up the air in your room.
Where needed, we'd install a proper heat pump for cooling and heating, solar powered during summer. (Not solely) German engineering...
I have to admit his twitter post got me quite angry for the following reasons:
This guys Points about Entrepreneur ship and billionaires is the reason America is what it is.
Being able to become a billionaire is a mistake in the System: it destroys Meritrocacy
Elon Musk has invented nothing that helps society: Paypal he bought himself in later but before it became famous. Same for Tesla which didnt have a decent new product in years completly overtaken by Chinese Car manufacturing when it come to E-Cars
The reason our social state is so good BECAUSE we try to tax the rich (not even close to enough) instead of taking the money from the poorest.
Start up dont really help the country they are a way rich ppl or ppl with rich backgrounds can creat a firm out of nothing bubble up its value and enrich the rich rarely do start up do good for society
Using Cash instead of card is not primarily to dodge taxes (it is used that way but can only reasonably done by small businesses which when it comes down it are not the ones with the tax burden) but to protect privacy
The same goes to AI, the way the models are trained and used infringes strongly on privacy and copyrighted material, and thats coming from someone studying computer science with a focus in Machine Learning
And last but not least i hate the air ACs creat and personally never had a problem with german summers it will get worse in the longrun because of climate change so i might change my opinion on them
I dont think we should let Crypto and Start up peeps direct our politics or we will go the same way america is going. Less controll over the rich and corporates will not make the live of the working class better. Trickle down is a lie!
Ole Lehmann is just another grifter with worthless "choachting" programm

The german Summers are getting cooler and shorter with every year !!! That's a fact !!!
AC are definetly not good for the health! They are energy expensive and our summers are not that long so hot that we really need them so much. the thing with the aircondition is, we didnt have much hot days in the year, the other thing is modern houses or old houses (altbau) have a good isolation, and get not so hot in the summer
this year was my hottest room temperature 25°C, thats fine for me
You listen to Techno? i have 2 playlists. 1 is filled up with about 700 tracks of techno and the other has about 100 uptempo tracks. There are also local djs in the first playlist, they are from Frankfurt.
Nur 700? Was stimmt nicht mit dir? 😂
@CavHDeu Ist das Ironisch gemeint?
@@Andreas-ml5pr nein sarkastisch
Ich lese "Frankfurt" und denke "Talla, Taucher und Väth". Shit, I'm getting old.
These little AC´s actually work, but the sis with the fucking window open xD
You need to install it properly with in,- and out take
Right, that crap with a hose just extending through an open window to blow warm air out is just expensive nonsense.🤣🤣🤣
Who has the bigger drug problem, whether it's medication, coke or fentanyl?*
If he had an American Express card, for example, I'm not surprised that he was turned down.
Bush Jr. once said "France ("socialist") doesn't even have a word for Entrepreneur" (Entrepreneur is French).🤣
This guy should have been in Berlin or somewhere else in the 80s.
(Source Statista)
Doing math: 26 in Germany per million inhabitants, 12 times higher in the US
🤔
It's called Keta-Pony.
I guess AC is just completely free in the US. What weird things you have.
A AC with a open Window, brainy.
Regarding the 500€ bills:
They stopped printing and distributing them since 2018.
It's remarkable how you've already received a quite reasonable idea of Germany.
Thank you for sharing your experiences of exploring our country!
The point is, that AC ist one small, but mentionable reason for global warming. So ist is kind of illogical to use it. And by the way your body hast his very own way of cooling down. WE are warm blooded 😏
Personally I hate AC .. so the first thing I do whenever I get to a place with AC, I search for a possibility to shut it off 🙂 ..
We still use cash because it's less expensive for the shop owner. They pay for the expenses of the banks, all the fees.. you have to buy or lease the card readers, etc. With cash, you do not have all of that. And no, it's not to avoid taxes easier xD
Germans are also way, way less over the top with emotions than Americans. (Except maybe while driving xD) So someone might come off as grumpy for someone who's more attuned to that over the top but isn't actually grumpy.
I live in Switzerland and organic food is double the price as the not organic food sometimes.
yep, you are right- AC is a question of costs, I couldn't afford to install it (nor would I be allowed to.
I don't like that it is repeated and repeated again and every time wrong. The real phrase is: "The customer is always right, in matters of taste."
If you had to pay $.50 per kWh, you wouldn't want the AC running all the time either... So yes, it very likely is about the cost here.
The window is open.....eerrr?
The customer is king is a rule that has been implemented by rich people. Why should the customer be "King"? It is a giving and taking. They take the product you take the money. Its a trade.
Literally every office building and public building etc etc has AC, most houses build between 1911 and now are build to insulate heat and cold... if you don't understand how windows work we can't help you.... ACs are absolutely TERRIBLE for the environment, not only through the massive amount of energy they use but their heat exchange produces an astonishing amount of CO2... i would happily get rid of my AC... instead of buying an AC you could learn that Air is cooler during the night... so if you open your window when it gets dark it gets cooler inside... really not rocket science
Also ACs produce moist air... which is black molds best friend which is why any rent agreement in Germany will have a clause about how often you should open your windows and for how long and what the room temperature should be... because if you get black mold as a renter....
@ Just keep your Ego at bay.😀🤓👍
In regards to electro music might wanna have a look at your home country as well check out BUKU he creates some crazy songs.
That guy again... Lehmann is a person that fits perfectly into American society and is a hardcore neo-liberal. He lacks the understanding how an economy actually works and mistakes good entrepreneurship in late stage capitalism with understanding economy. He's got a few valid points tho.
The amount of sugar in US bread probably makes a huge difference in how unhealthy it is - European bread typically has no added sugar!!
"Der Kunde ist König, der Verkäufer ist Kaiser"
Spaß beiseite - ich habe in den letzten 20 Jahren beobachtet, dass die Professionalität von sogenannten "Fachverkäufern" in fast allen Branchen nachlässt. Als ob die Azubi-Genertationen, die nach mir kamen, immer weniger lernen oder einfach kein Talent mehr dafür haben, mit potenziellen Kunden normal zu kommunizieren.
Nowadays the most people comming to Berlin, for example, un the age of 30 to 40 as couples. Show me a country were it is easy to find new friends. outside a bubble of Strangers, if inlander or not.
I am from Berlin, 50 jears of Age and i never had an air condition ( Klimanlage ) my hole live and what can i tell you? I am fine my hold live. To have air condition and cupholders all over the place is something special to the American´s.....Greedimgs from Andreas in Berlin, Germany
Yeah, we get like a maximum of 10 days a year that are hotter than comfortable during a particularly warm year. Super not worth it and over the top.
If you are looking for a heat pump: There are different types, not all need the ground evaluated
First of all cash is freedom. If there is no cash there is no freedom, because anything that is not in your hand can be frozen. Thats why cash is so good.
Exactly. People who are against cash are probably the same idiots who go by "who has nothing to hide has nothing to fear".
as a German I also love ACs.
13:16 In Germany they say, "Yes, the customer is king, but the service worker is emperor."
Problemhaarschnitt.
I think she didnt mean it like „get a better job brokies if you cant afford an AC“
I think she meant it like „spend your hard earned money on things that make you more comfortavle, thats what money is for“
Why smaller businesses don't have card readers is because they are expensive, not "to avoid taxes."
(Some maybe do, but tax fraud is not worth sitting in for. The penalties can be harsher than for violent crimes sometimes...)
Excluding the cost of the hardware itself, there are a bunch of monthly fees and terms you have to go with. If I remember correctly, the monthly fees are about 40-60€/month + 1-3% transaction fees per terminal. (40-60€, depending on whether the terminal is mobile or stationary.)
That's why some only allow cards if the total is ~10-15€ or more.
If that's her happy face, I'm scared to see her angry😂
That dude just wanted to flex his emigration and literally just copied every "10-Things-In-Germany"-video^^
For real 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I believe in Germany Bier is often referred to as Liquid Bread or Brot... 🍺🍺🍺 Cheers!
How the hell do you sleep with an A/C making noise the whole night?
Respectfully, there are only like 4 weeks of heat that is really exhausting. I live in a well insulated home. If it's 32°C outside, most rooms in my house will be 25°C, which still is a little too hot, but eh, it´s not that bad
Some problems listed like the Homeless situation is only valid for Big Towns like Berlin.,
As someone from germany, yes we all hate the super rich
I'ld rather have a grumpy waiter then a prentending to be friendly one like it is in the US.
Most of the stuff being talked about are Berlin/Big city things and by far not what to expect everywhere
bag of grapes - $20? What?
The A/C issue-we have maybe three weeks a year when it would be nice, so why bother? I have lived my whole life without A/C; it's not necessary in Germany. Then you need to store the AC unit somewhere for the other 49 weeks of the year. That sounds like more problems than it's worth.
Der König 👑 of currywurst 🤣
She has the most inefficient air condition i know. It blows hot air out, but (warm) air has also to come in to replace the blown out air. Yes it cools, but it wastes up to half the power. With best efficiency this leads to a COP factor of 2 or less.
You need a air condition with TWO hoses (in and out)!
To me a air condition should be efficient COP factors should be 5 to 6 (This factor tells about how much cooling/heating power it gets out of the electrical power:
COP = 2: 2000Wh cooling from 1000Wh electrical power.
COP = 6: 6000Wh cooling from 1000Wh electrical power.
The air system saves you around 10% in winter as it transfers the heat from the air outtake to the air intake ("Kreuzwärmetauscher")
Most new "Wärmepumpe" (Heat pump) can also cool - it replaces the gas/oil heater and is more efficient.
Thats more relevant than the attitude.
the whole quote is: "the customer is always right in terms of taste". so anything else ...f*** em. no reason to be disrespectful to the worker
