The available Intelligence and reconnaissance to know where the Chinese Army was and how many troops they had was almost non existent . Evidently the South Korean Army also did not have spies in the north to watch troop movements to help the Allies. Combine that with severe cold and the Marines having to live in tents outside it is a wonder that as many of our guys made it out alive. It was cold and snowy in France and Germany for our troops but the Mountainous snow and cold in Korea in 1950 would have even challenged our modern military.
Mac Arthur never spent time on the ground in Korea he commanded from japan. MacArthur was an idiot as was Almond he cost a lot of lives by splitting his forces at least Walker was smart enough not to spread his division too thin.
The so-called Chinese PVA "human waves" were a myth. In the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, the PVA 9th Army, consisting of the 20th Corp, 26th Corp, and 27th Corp, had a total strength of 150,000. The 26th Corp was the reserves and was too late for most for the battle. So the total committed strength from the Chinese side was about 120,000. On the US and ROK side, they were the US X Corps and ROK 1st Corp. The total committed strength was about 30,000, with the US 1st Marine Division as the core at about 20,000. So the ratio was 4:1 to favor the Chinese side. But the PVA were poorly equipped, with no air support, no tanks and almost no artillery. They were basically light infantry. Worse, the 9th Army was rushed to Korea from Southern China and with only light winter clothing. Therefore their non-combat casualty from cold and frostbite were staggering and far exceeded the US side. Despite all these, the Chinese POV fought bravely and also smartly. They took advantage of the terrain and landscape, employed better tactics to engage in close-in and night fighting to blunt the huge superiority in armor, artillery, air and logistics that the US had over them. It was one hell of a battle for the Chinese PVA.
