I want to thank everyone for the well wishes and condolences over the of #5 aka Blockhead. Part of life on the Ranch is the ability to welcome new life, and with life also comes death. Do Erin or I ever get use to that part of the circle of life? NO, but we do understand that death is going to happen. I have wondered and thought though out the day "Did I do all I could?" and my answer to that was YES. So, tomorrow life goes on, the herd will require attention, new calves will be born. I will continue with the 30 in 30, Ranch and Dad duties. Again Thanks to everyone.
I have a question if I may… knowing now that this lactic acid build up is something that can happen with big babies, is there something that can help rid the body of lactic acid, and if so does there have to be a definitive diagnosis or would treating for it “just in case’ do more harm then good? I hope this makes sense. Watching #48 not wanting to walk away from her baby brought a tear to my eye, so sad. I hope she heals quickly. 🇬🇧
Death is always a sad event, no matter the animal. In your case it isn’t just about the money or the animal, it’s both. That takes a toll depending on the births, think positive and I’m sending my positive prayers. Everything will balance out.
@@joanneriley3899 it is necessary to know what the blood pH is for exact treatment protocol. The more acidotic the pH is the more aggressive the treatment is. IV’s with 0.9% sodium chloride then 5% glucose to treat the dehydration & increase blood glucose level. The amount of each depends on the severity of dehydration & blood chemistry values. Then sodium bicarbonate dissolved in 500 ml water via stomach tube into the stomach after IV fluids are completed. I had to treat calves over the years for acidosis but always did it with the Vets protocol recommendation for amount of each IV fluid over the amount of time according to the blood chemistry values & severity.
We all know that losing Blockhead is losing money for the ranch, but in all the years I've been watching your channel, you've never made the loss of a calf about money. You've always stood by your mantra of, "the cows only ever have one bad day on the Ranch," and you and Erin truly do all you can to make sure that happens. That's one of the reasons why I've been watching almost since the very beginning, and will continue to watch until you decide to hang up the camera.
Mike & Erin, I want to applaud you for this video. Losing a calf or cow or any livestock is hard. Mike, the care & tenderness you showed that little calf #5 shows what an amazing job you're doing! Between pulling #5 and making sure he bonded with mom you did everything thing you could for him. If people make negative comments, then they've never experienced raising livestock. And those negative Nellys should be ashamed of themselves. So, thank you for showing that while unpleasant, this happens and you paid great respect to that little guy. And that is why we watch!
Hi Mike, he’ll that was sad loosing that calf, I’ve been farming most of my life, been there, done that, but seeing you walk that heifer out into the coral brought a tear to my eye, thanks for sharing your life, the good and the bad it needs to be seen, thank you and take care, all the best from John 🏴 wales UK.
Hey Mike. I am not a farmer just a mum. Would it be prudent if you have a kit with stuff to treat the runs in the animals so you don’t have to run back and forth . Not trying to tell you what to do . I just know when my son was a baby I alway carried everything I needed with me when we went out xoxo
Sorry for the loss, Mike! I was encouraged by your statement some time back when you said, “If you have livestock, you’ll also have dead stock.” May your calving season see more happy births…💔💔💔
Man that sucks. Mike, you did your best. By looking at your operation, you're a damn good rancher. At the start of calving season I say a prayer for you and them cows.
Sorry about you losing #5, you do a great job with your animals. Your ranch is where I would want to live as a farm animal. Keep up the great job caring for your family and the animals. We need more people like you and Erin showing us the right way through life. Take care and god bless you all
So sorry for the loss of that calf, Mike. You always go above and beyond and trying to take care of and save the lives of your animals. This is a fact of nature - life and death, and, like you said, it’s how you choose to view it. Let’s hope you have some better days ahead.❤
In life one thing is inevitable that there will be death. Doesn’t make it any easier, especially since you had to help #48 so much to bring that calf to life. There will always be negative in our lives, but it so much harder to be negative than it is to be positive. Being a positive type person makes your life so much better too. Thank you for caring so much for all your animals and making their lives on the ranch positive. Be safe out there with this storm brewing. Blessings my friend.
Sorry for your loss. We lost a young puppy a month ago to unforeseen health issues. We did everything we could and couldn't stop death. Totally understand how hard it is to lose part of your livelihood on top of it. Life is not easy. Praying God will provide in other ways and grateful you found something positive.
God Bless you Mike..you wear your heart on your sleeve! You love and care deeply for these animals. If anyone has a brain they should know you cant save them all, but damn if you dont do a great job taking care of all of them. Thank you for sharing the heartbreaking part of the 30 & 30. ❤🙏
Poor Mama. Charlie was so special. You and Erin did whatever you could; you're good people. Its the way it goes, unfortunately. Hope you have no more losses. My prayers to you. God Bless!
This was a real life video Mike on the Ranch❤ so sorry for your loss of BlockHead (Charlie)😢he sure was a big boy. I grew up on a farm with Cows and many other animals. You experience life and death which is reality just as life overall. Great message about being positive and not focusing on the negative. I have enjoy the 30in30 and can’t wait till tomorrow to see the next one. Stay safe and warm during the storm❤
And they say animals don't have feelings. That mama cow didn't want to leave her baby. This loss, though deeply financial, takes a bit of your heart each time, Mike. I'm so very sorry.
😢❤🙏😢❤😢🙏 great advice where's there's life there's death...... Where there's love there's grief. You did all you could do, Mike. So many you help who make it.
My heart breaks for your loss. There is no place on earth that life and death is more visible than on a farm or ranch. Thank you for your great efforts to keep every animal safe and healthy.
If it were not for TH-cam I would not even know about you, your family or your 'Ranch Life'. Thanks for letting the world have a sneak peek into it and how trying it can be. Keep up the good work.
The love and respect you have for the animals is inspiring. Thank you for what you do and for sharing it all with us. The 30 and 30 has got to be very difficult and taxing on you and the family. But it is so wonderful for your viewers and fans. Thank you for the work you put into the videos. Your production skills have grown so much and the videos are incredible.
So sorry for your loss. And we were quite literally watching you trying to weigh him yesterday too! Thank you for showing us not only the great things that happen, but also the bad too and how much care you give for these wonderful animals.
Dang it. That's a huge Bummer. Praying for many many more alive babies! Bottom line is that Ranch life is tough and losing anyone of your animals you pour your heart into is no fun at all. Sorry Mike and Erin Thank you for showing us the good and the ugly!
The loss of the calf to your family operations is a considerable hit Mike. And yet, just by being Mike, you sure have captured some video of a mother cow, grieving the loss of her calf! Hopefully the rest of calving season also brightens! -Bob...
So sorry for your loss. I can't imagine anyone finding negativity in your operation. The first thing I noticed, and reason I subscribed, is the heart you put into your animals. Those who get it, get it.
Mike, I'm sorry for your loss, you worked so hard to keep the little one alive. I, like all cattle farmers have had a similar problem, the frustration and sadness, feeling we did all that we could do. You said it best, we give it all our heart and sometimes, unfortunately, we don't always succeed. I can tell, you did everything you could to keep the calf alive, again heartfelt condolences. Thanks and have a good evening, see ya tomorrow.😥
So sorry for your loss Mike. That mama cow looked as sad as you. I’ve been watching long enough to have seen this before and as sad as it is - you still bring the ranch life to us City folks with dignity and Grace. Thank you…much love & friendship
So sorry for your loss, it makes me so sad to see one pass away. You all do a great job for as long as I have watched your channel I have not ever seen you mistreat any of your animals, just do the best as you do and no one has a right to say anything negative. Prayers for you and your family!
It's hard losing animals. Heartbreaking. Be safe with the storm coming. We have storms coming in our way.. I love your channel it shows us the good as well as the bad. God bless y'all.
Mike, you don't have to explain yourself or your life style to anybody. You do the best you can and stuff happens, it's part of ranching. Just keep on doing what you do, and thank you for sharing your life with us.
You are such a caring person and family man. On a ranch, raising cattle or any other kind of animal you are going to run into this kind of problem, issue from time to time. You did a wonderful thing helping that cow and calf. Doesn't matter what anyone else says. Thanks for the videos Mike you do an awesome job!
Mike those times are the hardest, and we are here with you during them!!! From one rancher/farmer to another we do the thing we can “keep move”!!!! Again with all of me I love the 30/30!!!!!
First of all, thank you for your openness over a tough situation. There's no doubt you are an expert in caring for livestock and daily activities of a ranch. So very sorry for the loss of a calf that struggled coming into the world and you without a doubt did all that you could. We never have full control over who stays or goes, and when it's our time.
I’m sorry for the loss. It’s tough. I remember when my family would fight for lambs but some just didn’t make it. Prayers to you and yours. Never second guess yourselves. I know the 30 in 30s are tough.
Absolutely huge respect for showing that life and farming isn't all sweetness and flowers. For sharing your sadness and the toughness you need every day.
Hats off to you Mike. Most people couldn’t deal with the extreme highs and lows that you deal with in this life you’ve chosen. Great job for staying positive and reminding others to do the same. I can’t wait to visit the ranch again someday 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
😭 I am so sorry for the loss of Blockhead. Praying that every other calf born makes it through. You may have lost this calf, but had you not been so attentive to your cattle you could have lost Momma too. Your care and attention doesn’t go unnoticed.
Sorry for your loss. It’s always a sad day when you lose something. You worked so hard to save the little guy too. I had to cry for both of you. God Bless.
Very sorry for the loss of #5 Mike. We know how you care so much for your animals and we get attached to them too. Hope the rest of the calving goes well!!

I love your heart and the care you give to your animals. I am so sorry for the loss of this beautiful boy. Hopefully this mom’s milk will be able to help in the future.
Very sorry for your loss but your attitude about looking for the positive is the key to happiness... We all have to find a way to pick ourselves up & carry on... GBY ALL 🙏❤️💙💖💖💙🤗✝️
It is called "Lactic Acidosis". It is caused by lactic acid build up in the muscles with lack of oxygen. Likely due to the traumatic birth. Such is the fact that you just can't win them all. You never appreciate the sunshine if you never see the darkness. Losing one reminds you to appreciate the ones you save. Keep your head up, Mike! Thanks for sharing your highs and lows with us!
“I always feel like somebody’s watching me!” So sorry for the loss. Watching you deal with this every year, doesn’t get easier. Like you say, you create life. And in doing so, you also have to deal with death. I wish you success.
Thanks for taking us as far as you did with taking tender care of your animals. Playing that easy music also was good It gave me time to pray for you as were doing a very important part of the ranch care for you animals. Thanks for making it possible me to be an important part of your ranch. May God Bless you and your LARGE family
RIP No. 5. After all the hard work you put into helping his Mama calf and the euphoria, I am sure may of your viewers, I was one of them, felt when he was alive to finding him gone that is hard. Even though it happens yearly on a Ranch, it never gets easy, yet you show up every new day with new hope and optimism that speaks volumes as to your character and your love for the animals that trust you and your family every single day for their well-being. Blessing to you and the family from Australia
I'm so sorry for your loss of #5. My heart breaks for you and your family and for the mama. You are a wonderful caregiver of your animals, and it's a joy to watch the videos and the love and care you show them every day. Take care and stay safe from the storm. ❤️🩹💝
I know we are all entitled to our own opinions what I’m not sure about is why people watch this video would leave a negative comment instead of just not watching these videos. Your commitment to providing quality beef while showing compassion to your animals is what a farmer is about. Great job Mike, this is my 3rd 30/30.
I,m so sorry for the loss, my heart is in tears. I know it's life but I could see the hurt in your heart. It's never easy. please know you are loved and respected by so many of your viewers. you are willing to give your all. I have learned so much from you and your wife. you are truly an inspiration to many. with love from Arizona.
Have watched your channel since it’s beginning. This episode captures the essence of being a beef producer. The joy of a new calf, the struggles of the process and the emotions of failure. Your body language during the segment captures everything. From one cattle producer to another, keep it up!, Signed, RD BAR Ranch, Cooper, Texas.
Hey from uk..just want to say how much your content and quality of videos have improved so much over the past 3yrs i've been watching. Love 30in30 so much, awesome idea.. the music is a great touch to your videos too,the content and filmography has blown me away this 30in30,jeez not over yet and I'm already looking forward to next year..lots of love to you all, wish we could order from you here in uk..❤
😢😢😔 The little guy was so handsome but this loss is so sad. I hope the rest of the calves survive and have good lives. I Love the care and attention you lavish on all your livestock.
Hi Mike, thank you for showing us the REAL life. ❤ It is like you said „the good, the bad and the ugly“. Many greetings from Germany And R.I.P. little Blockhead 😢
Mike, so sorry that's a tuff day for real. I know you did every thing needed to give the calf a good life. You truly care about your live stock. Take care my friend
You and Erin do a great job sharing your life with us. Thanks for being so transparent. I always enjoy your videos, even when bad things happen, like today. Blessings on you all as you continue on your journey.
I'm so sorry for the little calf, and his mama was breaking my heart telling her baby goodbye.😪 This was a hard one to watch. I'm sorry Mike. I sure hope you don't lose another calf or mama too. I thought of all the newborn calves, he was going to grow up and be a big ole steer someday. You never know, like you said another cow may reject her calf and this heifer can be a surrogate mom, or if one of the cows has twins she could replace having to bottle feed one if the twins. Losing an animal of any kind is sad, but the loss of a calf means a loss for the ranch. I hope the little calf with scours improves after his medication. Thanks for taking such good care of your livestock😘
mike....i kno the feeling. i hav 16 moma cows and lost the last calf. it lived 4 days. so 15/16 is the best i have done. but we get up and keep feeding. life goes on. good job and good day pg
As always, Mike, thank you for keeping things real. I always believe that out of every sad or bad situation there is good that comes from it. 🙏 Hope you all stay safe during the storm!
Sorry for your loss. It’s reality. Thank you for giving the mamma some time with her calf. I’m certain that you have done your best. Thanks for sharing with us. I never met a rancher with such a positive attitude. Life moves on and you will be blessed with many good things in the future. 🐄🐂
Thank you for your positive attitude. I love being on your ranch from the t.v. You have brought a whole new level of appreciation for ranchers and farmers.
I'm so sorry about #5 Mike. You did all you could possibly do for him Hun. I was really hoping he'd be ok & he seemed to be but as you said Mother Nature knows better than we do because we don't know what all was wrong with him. Please know you & yours & animal family also are in my prayers.
It is never fun to check on the animals and find that one is no longer with you, you always do everything that you can but you can’t watch them 24/7. So sorry for your bad morning😢😢. You have not do everything wrong. Life some times sucks. Have a better afternoon. Cattle are alway so curious and they sure love the cake. You are very proactive.
First time with you on the 30 in 30! Gotta say, I'm hooked. I've learned so much about how rough, yet rewarding farmi life can be. There is so much to it. Sorry about Blockhead, he was a big one. On to the next one. Hope the storm wasn't too bad. Keep 'em coming, I'm all in! Thank you for sharing you and yor families life. Beth
I’m sorry for the loss of the calf. It’s not easy but thank you for showing this side to farming. Animal husbandry isn’t easy but you’ve got the right mindset and are able to articulate it well to your viewers. So thank you again and truly enjoy your videos. God bless 🌻

Sorry for your loss. It’s always a sad day when you lose something. You worked so hard to save the little guy too. I had to cry for both of you. God Bless.
Thank you L R.
Sorry for the loss. That's a "sucky" job; having to bury that calf; but comes with the territory.
Thanks. It is sucky but its got to be done. Thanks for watching RB

Sorry for the calf loss. I know it is hard....even on us tough guys.
Thank you BlueHaya.
That is a heartbreaking part of your job Mike, when Blockhead died a part of you died as well, life goes on and you grow stronger. 🙏🏽🥰🇺🇸
“I always feel like somebody’s watching me!” So sorry for the loss. Watching you deal with this every year, doesn’t get easier. Like you say, you create life. And in doing so, you also have to deal with death. I wish you success.
Thanks Thomas
Aw, Mike. Sorry for your loss. 😢 You and Erin hang in there.
I'm so sorry for your loss of #5. My heart breaks for you and your family and for the mama. You are a wonderful caregiver of your animals, and it's a joy to watch the videos and the love and care you show them every day. Take care and stay safe from the storm. ❤️🩹💝
That was so touching when you said the cow was saying goodbye to her calf.😢💕
Sorry for your loss.😢 I'm crying now.

Hey, thanks appreciate that. Thanks for watching.
Well, I'm in tears. I feel so sorry for that mama. Such an innocent baby.
😢😢😔 The little guy was so handsome but this loss is so sad. I hope the rest of the calves survive and have good lives. I Love the care and attention you lavish on all your livestock.
God Bless you Mike and your family. Working with animals is a tough job so thank you.
Hi Mike,
thank you for showing us the REAL life. ❤ It is like you said „the good, the bad and the ugly“.
Many greetings from Germany
And R.I.P. little Blockhead 😢
Mike, so sorry that's a tuff day for real. I know you did every thing needed to give the calf a good life.
You truly care about your live stock.
Take care my friend
Thank you Our Wyoming Life family! Appreciate the commitment to content even when it’s hard.
So sorry for the loss of your calf. You did everything you could to save him.
Sorry for your loss. Praying the little heifer survived the scours. Great show. God protect you during the storm.❤
Our wyoming life I hope you have a great week and night and sorry to hear about the calf and I enjoyed the video
What a great job! This is not a factory farm, that's for sure. Nice job Rancher!!
You made me cry. What a wonderful message you have given us. (from Toronto, Canada.)
Don't think you hurt alone. My family cried over this calf. So sad You worked hard. Thanks for sharing your life with us.
mike....i kno the feeling. i hav 16 moma cows and lost the last calf. it lived 4 days. so 15/16 is the best i have done. but we get up and keep feeding. life goes on. good job and good day pg
A sad day but tomorrow is another day for better things and fresh opportunities. Keep the faith 🙏 moving forward
As always, Mike, thank you for keeping things real. I always believe that out of every sad or bad situation there is good that comes from it. 🙏
Hope you all stay safe during the storm!
Sorry for your loss. It’s reality. Thank you for giving the mamma some time with her calf. I’m certain that you have done your best. Thanks for sharing with us.
I never met a rancher with such a positive attitude.
Life moves on and you will be blessed with many good things in the future. 🐄🐂
Thanks for sharing what really happens on the ranch. I appreciate the closure of knowing what happens when a calf doesn’t make it.
Sorry about life's realities. You are one of the hardest working cowboys out there. We appreciate you, even thru the hard times.
God bless you all on the ranch. You did your best and sometimes your best isn't enough.
Sorry Mike it happens you do an excellent job taking care of your animals also you take care of your family during the storm ❤️
God bless 🌻
