The Chinese association and media have been pressuring him to retire for years. He's got eager to improve and play, but he doesn't have a say in the ticket of international events. That's how the system works. They avoid mentioning the word Goat in official media assets to discredit his achievements most of the times.

Being a stepping stone for younger generations is a martial arts mentality but in sport when you are not giving your best, you fool the audience and pity the opponent. Not to mention betting people. The other case is a king should retire after big win and i hope Ma Long has that mentality.
