It is truly an honor to have met Guro Lamberto Ticsay yesterday, (june 27, 2015). He is now 84 years old. He lives in Laguna with his loving family.
He is the arnis teacher of Guro Jun De Leon of Kali De Leon who, in turn, is the teacher of Sir Roland Isla of Isla Mandirigma Kali.
I am proud to be a student of the art handed down to us by these fine warrior-gentlemen.

    Translation from Kapampangan:
Ticsay: (inaudible owing to the narrator) pagkali-kali in other countries, or towns here in the... Philippines.
Old man: I play Arnis de Mano. [My] age: 50 years old.
Old man with "Arnis Referree" shirt: I am 77 years old. I already have sixty years... of playing Arnis de Mano (or I have been playing Arnis de Mano for 60 years.)
Note that the only person who used the term "pagkali-kali" was Ticsay. Not the two old farmers. There is no kali in Kapampangan.

Nice and rare video of Singko Tiros style of Arnis de Mano as taught by Lamberto Ticsay at the Far Eastern University in Manila. Ticsay was continually gathering information and collecting knowledge of different Arnis styles by seeking and meeting with old practitioners of Arnis on village squares, "Sabongan" or cockfighting arenas, along rice paddies after harvest, in coconut groves, on beaches, backyards, and any other convenient place. My first Arnis was learned from him at his P.E. class.

that 8yo kid is amazing. His power and timing are just right there. The shame of it is that in 1950s Philippines, chances are that he would never have had an opportunity to learn modern sign language or have special needs teachers. But people used to wear watches painted with radium... you know? everything usually gets better with time

    • @Hanshi64
      @Hanshi64 5 ปีที่แล้ว

actually, gentlemen, it is Doce Pares which means the 12 pairs or the 12 equals representing the twelve founding members in Cebu and in Arnis or Kali or Escrima all the same thing the term Grandmaster was identified as Presidente or Punong Guro the term Grandmaster was never really used in Filipino arts until into the 20th century. Finally the Conquistadors
did not utilize fencing methodology like the french they utilized more fencing styled footwork because midst of their fighting was done on a rolling ship and was very unstable at times.

@@spartanwarrior1 You left out Pigafetta's references to the huge scimitars (kampilans) that were used to hack Magellan to pieces. Likewise, Magellan had metal armor so the arrow and spears were not enough to kill him. Plus there are several stabbing techniques in arnis/eskrima/kali which are translatable into spear skill sets.
Arnis/kali/eskrima is a blade art. The sticks are just trainers. As the video narrator says: the long stick symbolizes the saber while the small stick symbolizes the dagger. 1:58
Likewise, taga means to hack. 2:12

In Placido Yambao's book,"Mga Karunungan sa Larong Arnis" published in 1957, it states that Kali is also know as Pagkalikali in the Luzon region of the Philippines. So I don't believe there's no Kali in that region of the Philippines.

indeed. Although, thinking of great japanese martial arts masters (especially in ancient Aikido as far as i know) the masters didn´t say too much at all... students could try - and learn.
    But it´s only what i´ve heared.... i´m a noob!
I guess it would just take longer without words.... and, sometimes, it´s even better without... words may confuse the experience because of the meaning one applies to the word... whatever.... i also would like to see the kid nowadays ^_^
