    Pathetic. Its terrible, that you don't have more of a platform. All these "big" names in the POE community that have cult followings, but don't take time to breakdown concepts of the game for everyone like you do. You've been doing this for awhile now. Just know your work is appreciated beyond expression & we do enjoy you being part of the community, a pillar believe it or not. Please keep up your contributions.

      @CowPimp you're doing good work. I would only suggest that you offer a couple tips for people, for example I run a build that is a bit of a glass cannon and the build guide is nice but doesn't explain how the defensive mechanisms work, and watching your video made me realize it uses endurance as part of the defense. The items are really bad and leaves me with like 30% damage reduction from armor, no evasion, but it can feel tanky at times. If you make a couple suggestions for people leveling it could be helpful too.

    Great video!
    Something i'd like to add about immortal call that i don't see mentioned often enough is that though in a lot of cases it gives less mitigation than other guard skills (unless you have a lot of hp) it has a few key advantages:
    -Doesn't really need gem levels for scaling, this means that getting str is not a problem
    -It doesn't only scale with endurance charges, but also with skill effect duration. Which if you are getting for some other reason, it becomes a very solid guard (thinking wintertide brand or storm burst, you already want skill effect duration)
    -It doesn't deplete. Sure the other guard might give you more mitigation when they are full, but immortal call gives you the same mitigation no mater if you take a hit or not.

    • @CowPimp
      @CowPimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good points! I do actually reference the first point. I have a bullet point noting that Immortal Call is the best guard skill to use if you can't reasonably invest in the stats that make the other ones powerful.
      Technically all of them scale with duration, but duration is perhaps a little more powerful on Immortal Call because of your last point. With enough HP recovery, it can mitigate insane amounts of damage without "breaking."
      I think IC is undervalued a little bit because of the power provided by a decent chunk of armour + Molten Shell. I'm still trying to figure it out, but my league starter may actually utilize IC and endurance charges on a Slayer running Masterful Form. I'm not fully decided, but a good chunk of evasion + Grace, a bunch of endurance charges, and IC could be the core of a pretty solid defensive package.

    • @apocryphascribe5019
      @apocryphascribe5019 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another important point to mention here is that Immortal Call is the only guard skill that directly mitigates damage from DoT effects, which is important if you're otherwise covered against hits.

    • @CowPimp
      @CowPimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@apocryphascribe5019 Very true indeed. The last build I played this league really tried to leverage the power of IC. It was effective enough that between taking that and the armour wheel which increases duration, reduces cooldown, and grants a bleed/corrupting blood clearing effect for guard skills, I was able to survive without a bleed flask.
      I also went alt quality to reduce cooldown further, and had lots of endurance charges for big duration. I was thinking of going Ashes of the Stars too, which would have lowered the cooldown even further.
      That setup really showcased the power of the skill.

In both this defensive video and your recent offensive video you briefly mention the usefulness of charges, but how to raise and keep up these charges is not really discussed. • @Shanjaq
    @Shanjaq 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very informative and immediately useful! I no longer scoff at the "3% reduced physical damage taken" crafted shield mod, as I see now why it's so rare and so small: it pushes way beyond the linear cap which would have taken 10s of thousands of Armour to lift normally, which is just out of reach for my current Witch char. Thanks for the thorough explanations, I now have a few goals to reach along the way to reducing my death rate from that of a techno song BPM :v

    • @CowPimp
      @CowPimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not just being a pedant here, but "3% reduced physical damage taken" is not the same as "3% additional physical damage reduction" (which is the exact text of that mod). If it said the former, then it would not aggregate with other sources of physical damage reduction (e.g. endurance charges) or armour.
      All that aside, you are correct that it's powerful with other sources, and that's really the key takeaway.
      Glad you found some of the info useful. Cheers!

    • @Shanjaq
      @Shanjaq 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yes, "3% Additional Physical Damage Reduction" is the one. Now I'm thinking about working Evasion into my defenses, it feels a bit weird going for all 3 when the classes seem focused on just 1 or 2, but for now I'm hoping to: kill fast->evade->block/suppress->mitigate(Armour/Resist)->fast regen buffer(ES)->regen life. Interestingly, there's a unique shield: "Emperor's Vigilance" which adds Glancing Blows, doubles attack/spell block and unblocked hits bypass ES, which seems like it would allow you to capitalize on life regen which might get wasted while ES is up normally?

    Just 1 thing I wanted to find out, and you didnt know either. Really wanted to know the order of the spell suppression damage calculation, which, in the case of the armour, does matter if it comes before or after for the sake of reducing the big hit before the armour formula kicks in, but i guess that, until GGG answers on any post on reddit or the forums, we wont find out.

    • @CowPimp
      @CowPimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Armour is definitely calculated before Spell Suppression is applies. Armour considers "raw" damage. The only thing that happens before armour is the damage taken as/damage shift that something like Lightning Coil does. Technically evade happens first, but it doesn't really change anything because you take 0 damage if you evade.

    • @ZelotITO
      @ZelotITO 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CowPimp i disagree on that.
      When using Transcendence keystone (armour reduction applies to elemental damage), elemental resistances apply before armour, so maybe other things could.
      Do you think that, on the wiki(receiving damage page), step 5 (reduced and less damage taken) applies to spell suppression? That would make sense, and come after armour on step4, but we have no real confirmation.

    • @CowPimp
      @CowPimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ZelotITO I guess that's technically true, but the Transcendence mechanic is a bit of a niche situation. Because elemental damage is balanced around the assumption that you have 75% resistance to elemental damage, the keystone would be absolute garbage if raw damage values were used. I suppose they could have it apply to raw damage and then quadruple the value of something, but this seems more "intuitive." Also, under most circumstances, it's not relevant which is calculated first because they affect completely different things. Anyway, I suppose this doesn't prevent spell suppression from functioning the same way, but let's just say I would be very surprised if it did. That is, I highly doubt spell suppression influences the armour calculation.

    I'm pretty much a complete beginner at this game so I don't know if this exists but I would love a source that categorizes all of the skill gems into their use types and explains what support gems are effective with them, as well as notable passives and unique gear. As a new player not knowing all of the skills, gear and passives that are available to me makes the game pretty daunting. Sure I can look up the skills themselves but without the notes of what works well with them I only have part of the picture. I feel it would be a useful resource while learning the game.

    • @CowPimp
      @CowPimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can search PoEDB.tw/us to find what supports work with a given skill. Search for the skill, then you'll see a tab called "supported by". This doesn't tell you what the best supports are, but that's impossible anyway because they are context dependent.
      There is so much content in this game that there isn't really a shortcut to becoming familiar with all available skill synergies. The best thing you can do is learn the foundational concepts so that you can look at a skill and understand what kind of things would synergize with it. Then, when you stumble across those things, you will intuitively make that connection.
      Again though, there are no shortcuts. I have played thousands of hours, and there is a ton I don't know about the game. To really enjoy this game, you need to embrace the depth and enjoy the learning process, content with the notion that there is always more to learn. At the very least, you have to make peace with not knowing everything, and knowing very little for quite a while. The learning curve is steep, and you will likely be inefficient and fail at certain goals for quite a while. It's definitely not for everyone.
      I make these videos with the hope of giving people the foundational information to evaluate and understand all the other pieces that connect. It's an uphill battle though, as there is quite a bit to learn before concepts really start to click. Don't hesitate to leverage resources like the Reddit page either. Yeah, it can be toxic sometimes, but there are lots of folks really willing to help. I wish you the best of luck!

    Is entropy considered in the roll that determines whether critical strike damage is applied?

    • @CowPimp
      @CowPimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a fantastic question. To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure. Because the entropy counter is "shared" among different enemies, and there doesn't appear to be a second entropy counter that is active at any time, I imagine it's one of two possibilities. One, the entropy counter ticks up and considers the crit roll to be functionally the same as a separate attack. Two, the entropy counter is not used for the crit check, and it's simply a random roll. This is a great question though, because if it's the former, then that would make you functionally immune to critical strikes from incoming attacks. Maybe I'll try asking on their forums. Again, really great question. Cheers.

    • @kaizer989
      @kaizer989 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CowPimp After looking at the wiki, it does state, "A critical hit is evaded on a separate random roll and will not affect this entropy value." I'm not sure if this means that it does not affect the entropy counter value or if it means it ignores the entropy system entirely. Also, if I understand entropy correctly, the counter value would reset much more often with critical strikes, making the next crit a purely chance-based roll anyways. Not sure about that though.

The mods probably have a big impact on what is actively threatening at any given time. Because you can't reroll them, it does seem like it can vary wildly.

      It is, but only if that's somehow universal. You don't mention eHP with respect to what damage type/source? For example, it's probably not worth the change if that's only for physical damage, but meanwhile you die more easily to elemental and chaos damage.

    Hi Cowpimp
    Just a question with regards to "avoid" damage, if I get 75% chance to avoid damage from hits by scaling elusive effect
    1) Does Avoid work like block ? a total random or Does it work like evade or dodge?
    2) From Poe wiki "avoidance" section, it say avoid happened if block failed, however from poe wiki "receiving damage" section, using example of Glitterdisc shield, avoid is placed higher than block.
    So which is correct?

    • @CowPimp
      @CowPimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Avoid is random.
      I think they are using "avoidance" as a more general term that refers to some kind of chance based mitigation, as opposed to something like resistances which are not chance based. Avoid takes place before block, but you could still block a hit that you avoid I'm pretty sure. It just wouldn't matter because you take 0 damage either way (but still might be relevant if you have any on block effects).

    • @CowPimp
      @CowPimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went and looked at the page to see what you mean. Now I'm not so sure. I guess the question is why does it matter? I think in most situations the order in which those things occur is irrelevant.

      @@CowPimp Thank you for the reply, one last question, if I to combo with Avoid(75%), Spell Dodge (75%), and block (75%), 3 of them being random ,would that lower the chance of taking damage to 0%?

    • @CowPimp
      @CowPimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edwinsim6024 Spell dodge and block don't work against the same damage sources. Block only works against attacks and spell dodge only works against spells, unless you're talking about spell block.
      In the case you present, the chance of a spell or attack dealing damage to you is .25*.25, which is 6.25% (which is 93.75% to prevent the damage). If you meant to say spell block, then you multiply .25*.25*.25, which is a 1.56% chance a spell deals damage to you (or 98.44% chance to prevent all the damage of an incoming spell).

    How would elusive buff affect the evasion effectiveness? Obviously it's hard to calculate with the constant decaying plus different sources of it, but, as I understand it, the function will become tighter to 0 as the buff is applied and decay to normal afterwards.
    I am curious about this cause I want to see how much practical evade chance can be stacked with the minimal evasion investment due to using Hollow Palm technique. Dread banner, blind, Arrow Dancing and Elusive seem like a good start but I wonder if I am missing something.
    Thanks for the video, it helped me a lot!

    • @CowPimp
      @CowPimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elusive has no effect on evasion, and vice versa. They are completely separate multipliers. 50% evade chance will double your eHP against strings of attacks whether you have 15% chance to avoid damage or 0%. Dread banner and blind will definitely help though. You absolutely need +% chance to evade and/or more chance to evade from Raider to get the most out of a minimal investment into actual evasion rating though.

I actually discovered a pretty in depth guide from the same content creator who created the leech guide I linked. Perhaps I should link it in the description. Thanks for watching.

    I made a reddit post recently asking if more evasion, specifically, any amount beyond 95% chance to evade (watcher's eye or not) had the same effect as armour where more armour actually helps against bigger hits. The discussion boiled down to whether or not monsters' hit chance can ever get below 5%. The rationale was that 'monster chance to hit' is the calculation you presented which factors in accuracy and my evasion rating. Astronomical amounts of evasion would mean astronomically low monster chance to hit and therefore more than 95% chance to evade. Essentially getting hit less than once every 20 hits, which, in turn, means getting a monster's chance to hit less than 5%.
    Are you aware if there is such a hard cap or is my thinking flawed altogether?
    Also, thanks for these videos, super helpful

    • @CowPimp
      @CowPimp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Evasion is hard capped at 95%. There is no way to increase it beyond that point.
      Also, evasion has no interaction with the size of the incoming hit. It either completely prevents the damage, or it doesn't, and that's entirely dependent on a successful evasion roll.
      Bottom line: any investment you make beyond that which gets you to a 95% chance to evade is completely wasted. The only exception would be for maps where evasion rating is lowered by the map mod, or if the enemy has an increased accuracy mod, and thus you would need a higher evasion rating to be capped against them.
