  • On October 23, 2021, the National Park Service for Lake Mead was invited to make a presentation, in Meadview Arizona, about the South Cove launch ramp conditions, future plans and what to expect as the water level declines with regard to boat launching.
Our local lake and South Cove "Guru" Randy Glaser arranged the meeting.
Randy hosts a facebook page featuring great info and frequent updates.

Thanks for posting the meeting. We have a place in Meadview been coming here for over 27 years, it’s hard to below we may not have a place to launch. I don’t have 4WD so last May was my last time on the lake. I have an old ‘83 Dodge D150 that I need to get running so I can possibly drop the boat in with. At least for a few more years.
Have you heard of the 500+ Plan to conserve water in Lake Mead? It says it’s to keep the Lake with 500 acre feet of water in the lake. I don’t believe it helps in Elevating the water level but rather keeping them at current levels.

It will be interesting to see, with our own eyes, what the 500+ Plan and the Tier 1 restrictions (which together is about 1 million acre feet) will affect the lake this year. I believe Tier 1 obligates California, Arizona and Nevada to cut 533,000 acre feet of take out in 2022. Lake Meads storage capacity is roughly 9 MAF. 1 MAF is a lot of water to find in a short time.

@@arizonaeric9598 do you know what the current MAF of the lake is? Their forecast don’t look promising but I don’t believe they take any of this 500+ plan in account. You leave in Meadview?

Hey Joe. I hope you and yours are well and doing as good as humanly possible.
As long as the development of the Nevada, Arizona and California deserts remains unchecked, the Colorado River as a water/electricity/recreational resource will become a thing of the past.
Bottom line… they are treating the symptoms versus attacking the cause. Sad!!!

Back in the late 30's, when the water was backing up against the dam, a study which included data from land surveyors and aerial stereoscopic photography, calculated the max capacity to be about 31 MAF. In the last several years the BOR acquired LiDAR (a combination of light and radar measuring emerging shorelines) to compliment their side scan radar (3D data below waters surface) to measure capacity. At the October meeting NPS said Lake Mead was at 9 MAF which is about 35% capacity. And. yes, I live in Meadview.

@@arizonaeric9598 well we are not off to a great start we will see where we are around this time next year. We are around Silver Creek and Bright Angel north of the market.

Finally a video with real information in it! Be interesting to see what becomes of all this when the lake refills.. Will these new ramps be useable again when the level drops again in years to come or will they be under 20 ft of mud...

Being out here in the perimeter, I am self taught. I did a full service including outdrive myself just in time for South Cove to be closed in a few weeks. Why can't you fire a PSL North America pipe plant and run pipe plants with pumps and pump the water back in 6 ft diameter we had a 40-man crew you can run two pipes in 4 months with pumps and feel like back up what are you doing for me and people don't have water you have a catastrophe so bad that even the army won't be able to help
