We had turtles feeding around our villa in the Maldives. Every time I entered the water via our steps they swam off like lightning. I couldn't get near any of them. The sharks and sting rays however would swim right by us.
Almost always far from the shore. That's why we go by kayaks to see them. But still they prefer shallow water. In that spot it's about 6-8 meters deep only.
It is best to go by canoe or boat to the cliffs of Montana Guaza. You can go with Kayaking Atlantis Tenerife. There is also a chance in Abades to see turtles, but you need to swim around 200m from the beach.

Sometimes turtles are friendly sometimes not. It depends on the species and personal character of the turtle.
