Honestly, I think the Moon is what starts the whole curiosity thing that gets us interested doing astronomy in the first place. Thanks for another great video.
So, I was having a sip of whiskey when "I totally ha....love the moon" line landed. This triggered the first whiskey spit-take I've ever had. Fortunately the glass was still near my mouth. Unfortunately, the spit-take splashed whiskey from the glass back into my eye, but I couldn't stop laughing. Love the editing Dylan - eye damage and all... Love it.
I love the final image! That‘s exactly how I see the moon in the evening sky with my eyes. An idea would be to have that light blue all around the moon, not just on one side. Because that‘s how it often looks after sunset with the sky not being pitch-black yet.
Thanks for this - I always wanted to take an earthshine pic and had several fails before watching this video. Now I’ve got a good one. I think for me the key improvement was using the gradient fill on the layer mask.
Thanks Dylan. Very informative info as always.... unfortunately as a newbie my weather here in Quebec is not allowing for any astrophotography outside... Getting hit with another 40cm of snow tomorrow... so always remember too “ snow is meaningless and I might die shovelling “ Cheers !
Dylan. Thanks for keeping it clear and simple. My new scope and tracking arrives today.. my first dslr shots will be of the moon. Cheers and clear skies.
Nice and quick. I make these type of 3D moons using two images of moon from different nights and superimposed onto each other in snapseed android app. Yes some libration effects to overlap accurately since I don't have tracking mount to get better earthshine image but for social media it does great job and attracts people. My fb page is MoonVerse for you to check some. I will tag you there.
It's definitely a bit easier in one shot before the crescent heads towards 30% .. that early first quarter phase isn't so bright that it starts to wash the rest away.
@@DylanODonnell Yeah. The only thing setting me back so far has been the need for a mosaic with my high focal length, but with the weather being so deplorable, I'll gladly set a night aside for a moon mosaic.
Have you ever bracketed (for shutter speed) say 4 or more shots of the moon, about one stop between shots, then combine in Photoshop's "Merge to HDR". Or even better use something like Aurora HDR to merge them, not for that over-baked HDR look that is everywhere on the internet, it might provide a much smoother blend? You have a lot more controls in something like Aurora. If you have the data, I would love to see the results.
Yes the cmos 174mm I have is great but doesn’t have a big enough chip to take the whole disc so I’d have to mosaic (which also can be done to great effect!)
Is there a way to do this with stacked video? I tried but the overexposed vid (for the shadows of course) had the sunlit parts flooding everything with blooming, diffraction and lots of other weird artifacts.
Great video and picture. Seeing the images you produce always makes me want to get into it myself! Hopefully one day but definitely seems like an addiction once you start
I had no idea someone who wasn't already doing astronomy would be watching any of my vids at all! I'm glad it's still entertaining enough in some way! And yes.. addictive and impoverishing heh.
beautiful, many thanks, but here’s a question that i couldn’t find a satisfying answer so far, how can you properly focus on the moon, i tried focusing on a star but it didn’t give me sharp focus on the moon, difference in distance maybe, anyway it would be great to hear your thoughts about it, thanks again
What is the electronic dance music you use in your opening and closing? Thanks for the videos! You inspired me to do an HDR of the Moon with my abominable Meade ETX something-or-other and my cell phone. Dang, they're no fun but at least lunar photos don't require expensive equipment. It's basically daylight photography.
Dylan - nice tutorial. Since you hate the moon, do you think astro photographers like yourself would have any interest in a relatively long focus (f/8 to f/10) Cassegrain form telescope that was optimized to reject bright sources just outside their field of view? Such a scope would be useful for viewing or photographing deep sky objects in the vicinity of the moon and would also have some utility closer to dawn hours or earlier in dusk hours. The guys who do satellite and asteroid tracking complain about the moon a lot but their targets are more time critical.
Hey Mark! Yes definitely. All astronomers want better access to the sky during moonless nights or even just to improve images like horse head were alnitak blows out. But as you noted the utility may be more for discoverers than photographers. I wonder how much of this could be achieved with new filters instead of a new scope though?
Dylan, with the great moon photos, it’s a shame you missed the eclipse a few weeks ago. I got lucky that it was on one of the only 5 crystal clear nights we had.
Hey Dylan, first thing is sorry for highjacking this video... Can you do a video on the F ratio myth with the same size aperture with and without a focal reducer. Does the reduced scope indeed gather signal in less exposure time for astrophotography? Thanks for all the Celestron we are on the same team! Clear skies!
I feel like you were massively trolling us all about photographing the "dark side of the moon" Dylan, haha. Thanks for the video, will definitely give your technique a go. I once tried to photograph it but the atmospheric disturbance was ridiculous, it was like looking at the moon at the bottom of a swimming pool. Took a whole bunch of subs and had to throw them all out in the end.
When I first got my telescope I looked at the full moon, big mistake, the thing was too bright lol. Also the first light of my telescope was with the cap on, I hope the gods of astronomy forgive me for that newbie mistake xD. The lunar eclipse that happened a day later was amazing though :D, I hope you get some good views of the upcoming eclipses over there in Australia.
