I can't believe you noticed the Mr Copper reference. I have rewatched these episodes multiple times. Only in the last few years did I notice someone else point it out.
Remember way back in season 1 episode 6, 'Dalek', when the Doctor described the creator of the Daleks to Van Statten? Calling him a genius, the king of his own little world...? Well, meet Davros, the father of the Daleks.
"Cloms gone. Who would want Clom?" I don't know about you but I find the idea of the planet of the abzorbaloffs going to war against the Daleks pretty funny
The utter terror from Sarah Jane upon hearing the daleks is so powerful. Hats off to Elizabeth Sladen for that performance I think you're the only reactor I've seen who had noticed the reference to Mr Copper. He clearly put his money to good use
The devastatingly serious way she played those moments always hit hard. For at least a few moments, the show isn’t that campy timespace romp it often is. It’s not that she’s just scared of some sci-fi monster, she’s existentially, immediately terrified for herself and her child.
@@julesreacts- Sarah's run on the show was really great. She met many aliens and visited a mixed bag of time periods with the Doctor. She also appeared in one of the most iconic Dalek stories of all time in 1975, so she knows them of old.
@@julesreacts At the time this season ran, she also had her own spinoff, The Sarah Jane Adventures, that was made with younger viewers in mind; some of its characters were in these episodes
My main memory of this episode is swearing quite loudly when that Dalek shot the Doctor and somehow getting away with it despite both my parents being in the room because by this point it was accepted in our house that I was overly emotionally invested. I was about 12 at the time. Fun fact, Wilf shooting the Dalek with the paint gun was not in the original script. Bernard Cribbins, Wilf's actor, phoned the writers up and asked for it to be added in for no other reason than he really wanted to fight a Dalek with a paintball gun.
@@simongiles9749 There’s also a similar incident in a seventh doctor episode where a dalek says my vision is impaired when the doctor threw a hat over its eye
Welcome to the ultimate cliff hanger episode. Three shows combined. Doctor Who + Sarah Jane Chronicles + Torchwood Then all the "companions" have returned... And Everyone is dying or under attack... Lucky you, you don't have to wait a week or more to see the next one.
@@Hexagonal_Goblin Fair. They never aired this side of the pond (that I know of) and thought it looked wrong... probably combined "Sarah Jane Adventures", and "Sarah Connor Chronicles" and got... garbage.
I remember back in '08 the whole country was holding their breath on this cliff-hanger. Everyone, and I mean everyone, was wondering what would happen next. It was the hardest week for all Doctor Who fans
Your genuine heartbreak over ten regenerating, the fact your not spoiled about anything basically which leads to that more sincerity in your reactions, your attention to detail (one of the few reactors who actually remembered mr copper, and the bees disappearing for example), your investment in the story and all going on, you joy in other moments where joy is the natural response, Jules you’re a brilliant reactor, i cry and smile along with you. Loved this reaction!
And as for doctor who no longer being your happy place to go, there are always those moments Jules and always remember there is so much to learn from the sad and happy times in doctor who and as Dumbledore said “happiness can be found even in the darkest times”.
I've watched this episode so many times but for some reason hearing Harriet Jones say, "Oh, you know nothing of any human. And that will be your downfall." made me teary-eyed. The way she goes out is so respectable.
@matttv94 As I recall it was a short poem in a book RTD was working on, that book was technically the first appearance of the 13th Doctor and possibly the 15th
Fun fact; the Shadow Proclamation scene was originally going to be a much larger epic call back; they had planned a massive crowd sequence in which almost every single alien creature ever to appear on the show had shown up to demand answers about the missing planets, including the Adipose, the Krilitane and the Slitheen. They were even going to have the now happily adopted child Margaret Slitheen have a brief speaking appearance (and got as far as recording her lines). A lot had to be cut due to time and budget limits, but even so it's pretty obvious that Russel T Davies was grabbing every single continuity reference he reasonably could for this finale.
@@charliechar__ his writing is absolutely shocking lately they new series is nothing like the previous. It's never felt less like doctor who as it has now.
Yes it was! We could not believe it! I still remember the sheer horror I felt of hearing the Daleks along with Sarah Jane!! The ending of this episode is a core memory for me haha
Typically it's widely known in advance that a Doctor is leaving and who the new actor will be by the time it actually airs - they'd kept this a complete secret. I remember that the various fan forums exploded that night. ^.^
I was 9 when this episode first aired in 2008, I remember THAT cliffhanger being all anyone talked about for a whole week at school, and everyone around the country was the same, it was the front page of some newspapers, the longest week of my life! 😂 Great reaction Jules! Can’t wait for the finale reaction 😊
The scene at 16:29 (if I recall correctly) was altered in David Tennant's version of the script. I believe his didn't include Rose, but everyone else's did. So when Donna said "Why don't you ask her?" that's a genuine smile from a coworker who knew his best friend was there. Tennant's reaction was authentic to seeing Billie.
Honestly as a child I cannot explain the feeling of excitement to see a Dalek inside the Torchwood Hub (yes I know I shouldn’t have been watching torchwood as a child) and Luke Smith from Sarah Jane adventures hiding from the Daleks. Just iconic
I'll tell you something, this episode was absolutely mind blowing to me when i was younger cause i watched all three shows Doctor Who, Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood. This was like Avengers 4 years before the Avengers movie. As a kid it blew my mind and how many names were in the opening credits lol. Something i thought about is that the earth was taken but the moon wasn't so does the moon just stay where it is due to gravity or does it begin to float off. Mini thing but it crossed my mind lol. The bees were disappearing and i love that line where bees are aliens... well not all of them lol Spoilers for Classic Who (Not sure how to bold writing on TH-cam) The reactions of Jack, Martha and especially Sarah Jane to the daleks was very powerful mainly cause Sarah Jane was there at the creation of them with Tom Baker's 4th Doctor and met Davros. That ending where the Doctor regenerated on the cliffhanger was absolutely mindblowing to me cause you didnt know what to think. It was absolutely wild.
Also the cast for this is absolutely nuts: -David Tennant -Catherine Tate -Billie Piper -Elizabeth Sladen -Freema Agymen -John Barrowman (Oh dear nowadays) -Bernard Cribbins -Eve Myles -Alexander Armstrong (Mr.Smith) -Penelope Wilton not to mention Julian Bleach as Davros creator of the Daleks
You can *bold* a word in TH-cam comments by surrounding it with asterisks (like *bold*) -- but it can get fiddly if you try to include punctuation or spaces or even if you just put punctuation next to but outside of it. TH-cam comment formatting can be a pain.
Now you DEFINITELY need to watch The Sarah Jane Adventures to find out who Luke, her son is, and Mr. Smith, the super computer is and how he has so much power.
My favourite episode ever, this is THE crossover. After the unbelievable cliffhanger, the week between this and episode 13 felt like an eternity, the week was full of speculation on who the next Doctor was, it was on the news and everything haha it was mad. This era of the show was total hype!
Since you started this series there’s been 2 moments I’ve been looking forward to your reactions in this series, this is the first. How transparent you are with your emotions is just so real to witness
19:53 The story of Sarah Jane and her son Luke are told in the tv show The Sarah Jane Smith Adventures which ran for 5 Series. Technically 4.5 Series since Liz Sladen passed away from cancer during filming Series 5. The computer on the wall "Mr. Smith" is also a regular on the show. The spider on Donna's back from the Turn Left episode is agent/tool of one of Sarah Jane's primary villains , The Trickster.
5:49 Ideed! The Daleks tried to steal the Earth in the old show. This was the Season 2 story "Dalek Invasion of Earth" with the First Doctor. If you ever see old pictures of Daleks rolling up and down the bridges of the Thames River with Parliament and Big Ben in the background...Yep they filmed it! And yes, that was how gonzo popular Doctor Who was by that time in the UK.
Bravo! I was wondering if I was going to have to mention it. Thank you for saving me the effort of typing it up. They finally completed their plan using the same device to collect the worlds.
The Daleks hadn't moved the Earth in that story though. I thought it was a reference to the first story in the Trial of the Time Lords arc (since the Time Lords had that whole business with Ravalox in The Mysterious Planet back in season 23 of the classic era).
A heads up that Catherine Tate & David Tennant (& in one story Bernard Cribbins aka Wilf) have recorded a couple of boxsets of full-cast audio dramas with sound effects for Big finish called The Tenth Doctor Adventures. Boxsets 1 & 3 are on the Big Finish website (boxset 2 was David Tennant & Billie Piper aka Rose & boxset 4 was David Tennant & River Song (Alex Kingston) & Spotify has boxset one.
11:45 yes! 16:45 this is why donna is my favorite companion.... she is just happy for the doctor, her friend, that he and rose found each other again. that smile, clearly showing, she is happy for him....
This is the best cliffhanger in the whole show. Crazy. You have finally met the creator of the Daleks. He has been mentioned in series 1,2 and 3. Well not mentioned really but The Doctor has told you about him.
What an episode! It's a testament to the writing that so many characters can feel fleshed out and work so well together on screen in ways that we sincerely care about. Well done for noticing the Mr. Copper reference! Can't believe you've now met Davros too -- a total maniac. That regeneration took everyone by surprise. I was 14 at the time and was so depressed about losing Tennant😢
I don't know if you remember but around this time the bee's actually were dissappearing in real life and they just decided to incorporate it into the story.
They did the same for climate change in the finale of series 2. The casual interweaving of real world headlines was what really made the first RTD era quite so good.
They're still declining, as far as I know. The news outlets just don't talk about it anymore. Various efforts are being made to help them flourish again, like the "bee roads" scheme here in the UK, but I've lost track of progress.
@@YourBeingParanoid [NODS] Not literally vanishing (as far as I know!), but simply not showing up in such large numbers as they used to. There are, declining numbers of bees in the UK and elsewhere... In particular, the kinds of bees that we rely on to pollenate lots of our food crops, which is bad news for our future food security. It's relatively easy to persuade people to breed and raise honey bees, because they can make money from the honey. It's much harder to persuade people to help the many other kinds of bees, as the benefit is much less immediate. And we don't need them mass-farmed in small locations; We need them out and about in the countryside, travelling the length and breadth of the country, carrying pollen from one field to the the next and the next and the next. With more and more land old farm land and wild land being built upon, they've tended to get stuck in small islands of accessibility, with no way to get across to the next "island" (if they try, they die of hunger or exhaustion en route). The "bee roads" scheme involves planting suitable food&rest plants for them all along our country roads (and not just along the B-roads, either! =:o} ), so that they have a viable way to travel around the country using the same routes as motorists.
One of my favourite stories in all Doctor Who from seeing all the companions and their such complete fear and hopelessness at the daleks especially Sarah Jane to the return of the daleks and Davros! It was also cool as someone who was a child watching this seeing Mr Smith and Luke from The Sarah Jane Adventures. I still get emotional at that final scene all these years later.
What an amazing catch I've watched this episode several times and I never knew the Mr copper foundation was supposed to be like the guy from the Titanic episode
Crisps? Tick. Pop? Tick. New Jules Doctor Who vid? You know it. Now this is the good stuff! The fear when he heard Davros' voice for the first time in who knows how long - chills. Next to the Master, he's the Doctor's biggest individual enemy. Even If you don't show it, you have to watch Genesis of the Daleks with the 4th Doctor and Sarah Jane. Classic story, classic Doctor, and a classy companion.
This is a good double parter too. A good cliffhanger, reveals of the other shows connected to Doctor Who (Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures). I love how the minute everyone hears the Dalek's they just know there is no winning. Don't know if you heard the name of the Dalek in the destroyed case but it's Dalek Caan (the one that escaped in the Dalek's in Manhattan episode). Wilf: You wanna swap? I love him so much. HARRIOT JONES! I love how you remember her because I remember being like 'wait who's this lady?' UNTIL she said her name then I'm like 'OH!' I love how she gives up her life, goes to show that while she may not agree with The Doctor she trusts he'll save the Earth. I love how even the Daleks know who she is XD Davros is an old Doctor Who villian and creator of the Daleks (I think, don't quote me on that because Classic Who I know little about). The Doctor and Rose together again! Only to be shot in the heart (literally). You have the luck to just keep watching, WE HAD TO WAIT A WEEK! People everywhere whispering about who the next Doctor will be. Legit it was a big thing.
I get so nostalgic for this episode, it was such a massive deal when it aired. It was front page on every news paper, everyone was talking about it. I was only 9 at the time and that whole week at school was just everyone speculating about what was going to happen and who the next doctor was going to be. Good times.
This is honestly the best crossover, everyone and evrything comes together, in the history of TV. I was 8 years old when this aird on TV and I loved every moment of it and still do to this day! Seeing everyone come back, even harriot jones is just amazing. The only thing that would have made this episode even better is if we got a name drop of River Song.
Elizabeth Sladen's acting in the scene where the Daleks send their message gets me every time, the way you can see the horror on her face and how she cries while hugging Luke.
instantly tearing up... if you know her, she has seen some real bad things with the doctor and came through, her, in instant terror, just by hearing that voice and word.... shows the $hit just hit the fan....
@@julesreacts so gronded and normal among all that other stuff that happened... a house, with a garden...... while he could have done whatever he would have wanted with that money....
A crushing episode. So much tension, so much happening, the feel of hopelessness is so intense. Good writing as always. There is one loophole i am considering: if the earth was taken from its coordinates, was it taken alone or together with the entire array of satellites? Because otherwise, global communications would not work. Anyway, minor detail...This show is so good and i promise you it will keep getting better, at least for quite a while.
Davros! Some of the best episodes of "classic" Who (4th Doctor) were the series including Genisis of the Daleks. This is when you are first introduced to Davros.
Back when the pandemic started, there were Doctor Who Lockdown watchalongs. The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End wasn’t the first, but when it did happen, Zoom had already blown up. So watching the Subwave Network scenes very much had a “look how far we’ve come” vibe
Man that was such a shocking cliffhanger, i remember when i watched it the first time and i was wondering who was gonna be the next doctor. Also they did the whole avengers team up before the avengers movie even came out lol
This was actually the first episode of Doctor Who I ever watched! I was so confused, missing all the references and I had no idea who anyone was, but I was hooked.
That's the episode I was talking about some time before in terms of watching an arc from the classic era. Usually they either explain the enemies or simply introduce them anew, but for some reason with Davros they just kinda forgot about it, but at the same time not only Doctor remembers him, but Sarah Jane does too, which makes it really weird for the new viewer (for me at least). Even more so, in the new series the Doctor actually refers to Davros several times when he describes the creator of the Daleks, but never by name until this episode. In case you want some information and you're not planning on watching "Genesis of the Daleks" from the classic era, here's a quick rundown: It's the Fourth Doctor's era, he's wildly considered the most popular and iconic of them all, Tennant is a close second. His companion at the time is Sarah Jane Smith, the same that is in this episode, but 35 years younger, she's also considered one of the best companions of all the eras, so this is literally the golden match. The plot is that the Doctor is sent back in time by the timelords to the Dalek planet of origin, Skaro, with a mission to stop their creation before they take over the universe. There is no "Time War" in the classic era, so the Daleks are literally just the Doctor's arch-nemesis - the ultimate race of racists who want to exterminate everything that isn't a Dalek. On Skaro there's a thousand year long war going on, with nuclear strikes and chemical warfare, and there the Doctor meets Davros - a scientist without moral code (looks about like in this episode, but with his chest still intact), who's working on a new warfare machine to win in the war between the nations on the planet. Turns out that it's not exactly a machine, its a person that is very inhumanely experimented on, with evolution from the nucs and chemicals additionally sped up and twisted by Davros, turning his people into the squids we know and love and putting them into the classic metal cases. This is the first, but not the only time the Doctor meets Davros, and in most of those cases Davros is basically described even by his actors as "Hitler meets Stephen Hawking". He not only twisted the evolution of his people, but he also deliberately infused them with pure nazi fascist ideology, to turn them into controlled ruthless killers. However, by the end of the episode, while the Doctor contemplates where he can decide who's to live and who's to die, the Daleks go mad on their own and refuse to take orders from Davros, because - yeah, he's not a pure Dalek. Still, he pops up from time to time to rebuild this race when they are for some reason almost extinct.
And people said Avengers: Infinity War was the most ambitious crossover of all time!? Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures beat them to it! I love this finale, so much fun getting to see everyone come together to face the Daleks! Remember back when you first met the lone Dalek in Henry Van Statten's museum, The Doctor told Van Statten that the Daleks were genetically engineered by "a man who was king of his own little world," right? Well, now you've met the man himself, Davros! Good on you for catching basically all of the callbacks and references in this one! The bees, The Shadow Proclamation, The Medusa Cascade, Mr Copper, the Lost Moon of Poosh... you even remembered Clom! Impressive stuff! And then there's that cliffhanger! I was 11, and let me tell you, the UK broke for a week! Everyone went mad wondering who the next Doctor was going to be since they hadn't announced a successor to Tennant yet. There were some insane theories being thrown around!
Ooh boy, there's a lot to unpack here! But first of all, good job catching that Mr. Copper reference. I've watched this episode dozens of times, but I've never picked up on it. Now, it's important to note that Season Four was Russell T. Davies' (the man responsible for reviving Doctor Who) final season as showrunner (he'd do a series of specials in 2009/10, but this was his final full season), so he really wanted to tie his whole era together. That's why there are so many returning characters and references to other episodes. Apparently he originally wanted the Shadow Proclamation to be filled with aliens from his era, but they didn't have the budget for it. It's hard to describe just how epic this felt at the time, especially with since it crossed over with Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. This was 2008, so pre-MCU or Arrowverse, so it felt so unique. The role Harriet Jones plays here was actually originally meant to be occupied by Donna. RTD had hoped they'd be able to get Catherine Tate back for this role, with the idea being that Donna travelled the world and set up the Subwave Network. However, when Catherine said she'd actually like to do a full season, they jumped at the chance to make her a companion. RTD considered filling her original role with a descendent of Joan from Human Nature/Family of Blood, before someone else in the production team suggested Harriet Jones. They pointed out that she needed a third appearance to give her a redemption arc. Now, Davros. Davros is the creator of the Daleks, first appearing in the Fourth Doctor story, Genesis of the Daleks. Here, the Time Lords sent the Doctor, Sarah Jane (hence her recognition of him) and fellow companion Harry, back in time to stop the Daleks from being created. He then went on to appear on every Dalek story for the rest of the classic run. When the Doctor says that someone tried to move the Earth before, he's referring to the Daleks' second ever appearance, The Dalek Invasion of Earth. It's a hugely popular and important story that sees the Daleks occupying Earth in the 22nd century, attempting to remove the Earth's core so they can put an engine in and pilot it around the universe. It and the Daleks' first story were both adapted into movies starring Peter Cushing as 'Dr. Who'. This is such an epic two-parter and I'm so glad you enjoyed the first part, even if it broke you at the end. Sorry, but that regeneration is one of the moments I've been eagerly waiting for you to get to. That's only the second time that an episode has ended in the middle of a regeneration and it's the first time that it's happened in the middle of the story. I am so psyched to see what you think of the finale Jules! Eek!
Man I've been waiting with baited breath for you to get to this two part story. So many lines of time combined into this story. More than anything Harriet Jones return was the big jaw dropping moment for me. Hated to see her go out like that, but she proved the doctor wrong as well, despite what she did she was right to want to protect the earth because he cannot always be there at the right time. Old gal went out like a boss. SOOOOOO GOOOOD! Was a bit annoyed of about Rose being petty about Martha and not being on the call. Totes coll that you made that connection to Mr Copper. I always thought that was the name of one of the men the Sigarax's killed in front of her in the xmas special. But you hit the nail on the head J-bird. Seriously please apply to write for the next season of Dr. Who, we need someone with your skills at the helm.
The Run that is what sums up this episode for me, rose and the doctor running towards one another at the end. When I watched that scene for the first time around in the spilt second of the Dalek showing up in slow-mo, I thought the Dalek was going to get rose and as rose being my joint favourite companion I was freaking out then I doubled freaked out when the doctor got hit. Even tho it's emotionally hard that the doctor was hit and has to change ( I'm putting a positive spin on a negative bit of the story here) at least the doctor will be alright with the regenerative circle. If the Dalek had got rose, she would have been gone, no coming back which I emotionally would have been done with this show if that had happened, but rose is good, the doctor will change and that will be emotionally hard but ready for the final episode of this series it will be an emotional rollercoaster of an episode.
I would like to point out that the Dalek which shot the Doctor is the only Dalek ever to exterminate the Doctor. Too bad it was destroyed immediately after, he would have been revered by all the other Daleks but they never even find out about it.
A couple of things about the episode: Eve Miles played both Gwen and Gweneth (from the unquiet dead) they are related. 5:46 is a reference to a First Doctor serial where the Daleks tried to extract the Earth's core to turn it into a spaceship. Mr copper was supposed to be in Harriet's place. The actor declined. Giving us more Harriet. Stephen Moffet hated that Harriet died and asked Russel to revise her. In expanded media Russel wrote that Harriet fell through a trapdoor and rode a Moped to safety. Russel confirmed this to be true.(Do with that with you will.) Meet Davros: my favorite staple villain of the series. First appearing in 1975, Sarah Jane's friend shot Davros's hand off that's why it's a metal hand.
How are Gwen & Gwyneth related? I ask, being particularly fond of Torchwood’s Gwen. One lingering disappointment I have is no storyline ever emerged where Gwen had occasion to step into the TARDIS. Just to see her reaction. A short trip optional. But it wasn’t to be… 😢
The Absorbolof from Clomb, sister planet to Raxicoricophallipatorious. The expectation subversion in this episode was brilliant. For those of us who were watching the spin off shows at the time, this episode, this two parter and the re-emergence of Davros from the Time War itself was mind blowing. The fact that Bad Wolf in the moments it existed in Rose Tyler changed so many branches of so many possibilities, is brilliant writing.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the second chance they gave to the former prime minister Harriet Jones (you might know who she is) in this one? She was a really fun character in the season 1 and it was SO disappointing to me how she went against Doctors wishes and ended up losing her trust in 10's first real episode instead of becoming a recurring ally instead. But the thing is that while the Doctor lost his faith in her at the time, she never did lose her faith in him. Always trusting that he'd be there for the Earth and humanity when he is needed the most. And in the end, even if she knows Doctor doesn't really necessarily consider her as a real ally anymore, she is still willing to go down and sacrifice herself pretty much just give him a call. ...And I'm SO GLAD they brought her back for this and allowed her this slight redemption! I mean, sucks that she gets killed off, but at least she goes off as a unsung hero now! Here's to you Harriet Jones, here's to you! o7
It seems normal now but to have multiple shows in the same world come together, all the previous seasons and the spin-offs, in this massive finale was insane pre-avengers. And that cliffhanger!
I must admit, I am MADLY glad that I could still binge all these episodes when I watched them for the very first time. 😅 I started watching the show, just about when series 7's first half finished airing. And I fell in love with the show instantly. I started with "Rose" of course. But I never looked back... And I probably have a whole essay more to say, but I want to keep the main thing, I wanna talk about. The basics. I realized all the way back, that Doctor Who basically means endless possibilities. Because if this of all the episodes is the episode, I wanna talk about it, I must say: To all the Doctor Who haters and nay-sayers out there, who just HATE the show: ... I hear you... 😅 *I feel you...* 😔 Because ever since I showed my brother and his wife the episode "Blink" and they absolutely hated it and couldn't finish watching because "cringe" and "logic".... I had to TRY and listen because I wanted to understand how ANYONE could think that.... And I think, this is finally the conclusion! Seems, that one random TH-camr I saw ages ago, with the coffe mug and the beanie (I think), who said, he knows what Doctor Who's problem is, was right all along: Doctor Who basically has no rules... Like, it's a VERY basic framework for a story, that works ... But it's basically carte blanche for any writer. 😅 you can come up with so much crazy sh^t and never have to explain most of that, because "time".... Right? And space... And Russell does a LOT here. And I almost tried to make comparisons now and try to uncover the main differences between loving or hating the show, but this already IS an essay... 😅 I would need another one.... So let's just sum up by saying this: I noticed that Russell is willing to give up a lot of logic for spectacle. And I kind of get it, because I can feel what it does emotionally. I got SO invested in the story when I saw this the first time. When I see it now.... I have some MAJOR problems.... Like, he drops ALL this stuff on you here, so many returning characters (I know, Davros is not a "new" character per se, he was in Classic Who already but can we all agree, that he's just AWESOME? And Julian Bleach plays him BRILLIANTLY and I can kind of sort of relate to the character way more than I'd ever be comfortable admitting...🤭😔) , so many new things, too (like "Project Indigo"? "Osterhagen Key"? Wth?), which are basically ALL just Magguffins. But we need them, because plot! And I'm here for it. But I also kind of get the people who say, this is way too much and confusing for them. And I'm of course still generalizing some things too the whole time here, this is just my experience with the show. But I'm just basically saying, if you're more of an "emotional" thinker, who starts to cry easily (which I do all the time), then this is the stuff for you. If you can embrace a bit of chaos in life or had to and you can deal with it, try it out. This is creative, emotional character drama (and god, YES let us throw a BIT of romance and daily soap in there as well, to all the "The Doctor and Rose"-haters!! 😡😅) you can get invested in and cry your brains out... If you prefer "functioning" in life. Always do the same. Logic and reason are your friends... This stuff could give you nightmares. And of course I hate generalizing people like this. But I want to point out something very important: Either if you're neither one, I think that there is stuff for you in Doctor Who. There's still a lot stuff for my brother and his wife there, too but I don't wanna force them to try and find it. 😅 But there is stuff for anyone in this show. Which is what *I* love the most about it... But this show had me argue and think and sometimes question more than any other show in my life (I mean, THIS basically took me like 50 minutes to write and it's garbage... 😅🤭 ) but that's kind of awesome, too. This is the easiest show to write for with so much emotional baggage and over 60 years of lore, I've also already loved some of it and hated other stuff of it myself. But it's like THE show you can do that with. And I really hope it never dies... But as I said, I've noticed, Russell is more of a spectacle guy. Who maybe "thinks" more later sometimes... But this could probably be *the most* you can get emotionally invested in it ever... People may have pointed out that after this season, Steven Moffat took over the reigns as a new showrunner. And he's more known for.... just having a massive, massive brain. 😅 It already became like a running joke. But the stuff that's gonna follow now for you, became what many people, me included, also like to call "the golden era" of Doctor Who... Whoa... 🥵 So... Hope this was... interesting to read... Without too much spoilers. Basically 60 minutes now and I'm sleep deprived. But this is EASILY the longest comment I've ever posted, so I hope at least someone got a kick out of it. This show is worth it for me... And Jules of course, too... 👍🤝
there are quite a lot of happy moments in the show, but you will have to fight, to get to them.... or as Madame De Pompadur said: " one could endure a world full of daemons, for the sake of an angel"
That’s Tommy Knight as Luke Smith, Luke is Sarah’s adopted son, a 13-14 boy at the time of his introduction in The Sarah Jane Adventures, if you want to get to know Luke & Mr Smith, (the super computer voiced by comedian/game show host Alexander Armstrong,) you’ll have to check out the Sarah Jane Adventures. Tommy was an age appropriate casting for the role of Luke over the Dawson casting that you see in movies and tv shows, (casting older teens and adults to play younger characters to skirt by child labour laws.)
LOL "Can we have David Tennant as... the Doctor forever?" I've heard it said many times that if David Tennant had his own way - YES - he would have stayed in the role forever! :) I think he could easily have done another season. In the classic era, the most famous Doctor was played by Tom Baker. He stuck around for 7 seasons, and it was too long. It really was... It did not do the show any favours ultimately, because you ended up with an entire generation of kids not knowing about regeneration, but also - Well, as AMAZING as Tom was, there really is only so long you can carry the huge energy you need for this role...
Hey Jules, we feel your pain. As others have said I remember seeing this episode when it came out and thinking holy crap this can not be happening! It's so brilliant to see everyone again - Rose, Martha, Jack, Sarah Jane, Harriet Jones and of course our number one star- Wilf and just as we're cheering the team on - bam, there goes the rug from under our feet. Great reaction as always, tissues and all :)
Stay strong - we each have had to face losing "my Doctor" at some point. For me, it was 8th June 1974 - I'm over it now, mostly. The show goes on and you find new things to love, without ever losing that attachment. I love the gathering of the Doctor's allies here - I imagine the impact was slightly enhanced by me having followed both "Torchwood" and "The Sarah Jane Adventures", but it obviously meant something to you anyway, as I hoped.
Eve Myles (Gwen of Torchwood) appeared as Gweneth the undertaker maid in the episode about Dickens and the gas beings . Gwen is related to het just saying.
Love it when the whole gang gets together. Whenever there is a new regeneration, everyone has the same feeling of not wanting a change yet. It is this episode where they are wanting to draw you into the Torchwood realm, and the Sarah Jane Adventures, and you may not realize it yet, there are some Easter Eggs.
Like I said Sarah Jane's been off having her own adventures. Mostly good stuff. Harriet's sacrifice is honestly one of my favourite scenes in the whole series. Acts of selflessness like this is just something I love to see and all the Doctor's friends rushing towards him and working togethor you can see the impact he's had on them and feel the weight of history there.
Omg 11:42 you caught on immediately! When i was a kid i swore this was gonna be the next bad wolf/torchwood/mr saxon/rose returning bees and planets - hidden clue for season 5 but nobody was talking about it!
@@christianschoff2490At the very least, I'd say she's got the *right kind* of intelligence to be a companion. After all, we've got The Doctor for booksmarts, what a companion needs most of all is emotional intelligence and an eye for the tiny little details that The Doctor misses.
This episode has so many characters in it, it's crazy. Eventually I did watch Torchwood, but when this came out I hadn't seen it yet. I'm looking forward to you getting to see the next episode! Whenever there's more than one part, I always just want to see you react to the next one, but I'll have to wait! Thank you for these as always!
Spamming comments. Don't worry Doctor Who is a roller coaster. Happy fun episodes are always around the corner and then around the next corner is another heart breaking moment. So many people wished for 10 and Donna to be forever
I'm glad your finally watching this story arc of Doctor who, this is Dr who verision of Avengers Infinity War/Endgame before those movies even came out. Also the Actors who Gwen & Ianto also voice two Elven characters in Dragon Age games. Eve Myles who Plays Gwen voice Merrill in Dragon Age 2 & Gareth David-Lloyd who plays Ianto voice Solas in Dragon Age Inquisition & upcoming Dragon Age Veilguard/Dreadwolf.
Somebody’s probably already mentioned, but this takes place after series 2 of Torchwood and series 1 of Sarah Jane Adventures, but you can totally understand everything happening, as you did, without having watched them 🙂
Except if you haven't watched Torchwood before you've spoiled the first two seasons because Gwen says Owen and Tosh died, so if you then go and watch Torchwood you know that you're going to lose them at some point
Yeah, I could understand the Torchwood team and Sarah Jane team were a part of this finale. I just honestly don't have time for more reactions on the channel, so I wasn't able to watch them. I think some people think I snap my fingers and it all gets watched/edited instantly 🤣
@@silverbrumbyfan that’s an easily missed detail for someone who has no idea who they are - but if someone were to plainly explain it in a TH-cam comment… 🫠
@@qqqqqqqqqqqq121212 You're missing the point, if someone were to watch Torchwood after this episode they would be introduced to more characters than they met in this episode, so they would already know that somethings going to happen to them. @@silverbrumbyfan and your missing the point that it would at least still be a bit of a mystery - but if somone comes into the comments to outright say it, then it’s well and truly spoiled. 1. First things first: Davros is the Big Bad Monster from the past. He and his creations do not always get along, but like The Doctor do single him out as important. Davros is frail, but he is the genius scientist created the Daleks and can do other nasty tech tricks. 2. Sarah Jane Smith KNOWS Davros! The origin of the Daleks was revealed during the time of The Fourth Doctor. Sarah Jane was hia Companion in the story "Genesis of the Daleks" where Davros is iintroduced. The Time Lords sent the Doctor to stop their creation, many fans declare now that the old story is the first shot of the Time War!
That cliff hanger. And your crying *hugs* It is such a big gut punch having Rose and The Doctor reuniting only for him to be shot by a Dalek. But yes! SUch a good episode and calling back and bringing in on the plotlines and spin off shows
One of the biggest cliffhangers in New who, it was talked about non stop all that week leading up to the next on radio and even on the main news headlines, new who's peek popularity in my opinion
Always a pleasure watching this show form your eyes. Luke, Sarah Jane's son, is a regular in Sarah Jane Adventures, while the two people with Captain Jack - Ianto Jones and Gwen Cooper - are regulars in Torchwood.
3:34 Heres a glimpse of the Torchwood team. Unfortunately due to story events, its just the three of them, but Ianto and Qwen are still such sweethearts ❤
0:25 "oh no... all the milk!" is hands down my favourite thing anyone has ever worried about in a doctor who finale
🤣🤣🤣🤣 LOVE IT!!
I can't believe you noticed the Mr Copper reference. I have rewatched these episodes multiple times. Only in the last few years did I notice someone else point it out.
Same!
I never noticed it until this episode!
I've seen it so many times too! lol
I was thinking the same thing. Jules, if you read this, I concede that you are a better Doctor Who fan than me. I now go to hang my head in shame.
I am amazed
I have watched these episodes 20 times and didn't make the connection.
I love the running gag of Harriet Jones introducing herself. Everyone seems to know who she is.
Remember way back in season 1 episode 6, 'Dalek', when the Doctor described the creator of the Daleks to Van Statten? Calling him a genius, the king of his own little world...?
Well, meet Davros, the father of the Daleks.
When i first heard his voice, watching this for the 1st time, it still makes giddy knowing the true villain is back, and better(?) than ever
Even without watching the original series, his reveal sent chills through me
"Cloms gone. Who would want Clom?" I don't know about you but I find the idea of the planet of the abzorbaloffs going to war against the Daleks pretty funny
Raxacoricofallapatorius might miss it once its orbit goes wild.
Imagine if the abzorbaloffs could pry the dalek casings open and absorb the daleks 😂
The utter terror from Sarah Jane upon hearing the daleks is so powerful. Hats off to Elizabeth Sladen for that performance
I think you're the only reactor I've seen who had noticed the reference to Mr Copper. He clearly put his money to good use
The devastatingly serious way she played those moments always hit hard. For at least a few moments, the show isn’t that campy timespace romp it often is. It’s not that she’s just scared of some sci-fi monster, she’s existentially, immediately terrified for herself and her child.
She is just amazing, isn't she?! I really want to see her on Classic Who at some point. She's brilliant.
@@julesreacts- Sarah's run on the show was really great. She met many aliens and visited a mixed bag of time periods with the Doctor. She also appeared in one of the most iconic Dalek stories of all time in 1975, so she knows them of old.
@@julesreacts She witnessed the daleks' creation.
I love that 😊
I'm sure his character did something similar in the Peter Cushing film, and the Dalek's line about "My vision is *not* impaired" was also a callback.
@@simongiles9749 There’s also a similar incident in a seventh doctor episode where a dalek says my vision is impaired when the doctor threw a hat over its eye

I remember back in '08 the whole country was holding their breath on this cliff-hanger. Everyone, and I mean everyone, was wondering what would happen next. It was the hardest week for all Doctor Who fans
Producers: "So, Russel T Davies, how many callbacks and easter eggs do you want to have?"
RTD: "Yes."
It works so well though
Back when he liked and respected the fans.
She is a true hero 💜
Saw a theory that she didn’t actually die. She had a secret trapdoor in her floor that she fell through instead!
@@matttv94 not a theory, but said directly by the showrunner. So its technically canon.
@@alextrill1746 ah I wasn’t sure. Thanks for confirming!

I read that England was like, "WHAAT???" :)
yeah, I bet!!
The very best of Dr Who all in this episode
i was 13 at the time and it blew my mind
I was 6 at the time, and honestly it was crazy lol it was on BBC news and everyone was completely shook
Jack’s gun is the one he made all the way back in S1. I love little details like that.
That cliffhanger ending was the longest week in my life to find out what happened
This was the Infinity War for Doctor Who back in 2008.

The bees were disappearing and i love that line where bees are aliens... well not all of them lol
Spoilers for Classic Who (Not sure how to bold writing on TH-cam)
The reactions of Jack, Martha and especially Sarah Jane to the daleks was very powerful mainly cause Sarah Jane was there at the creation of them with Tom Baker's 4th Doctor and met Davros.
That ending where the Doctor regenerated on the cliffhanger was absolutely mindblowing to me cause you didnt know what to think. It was absolutely wild.
Also the cast for this is absolutely nuts:
-David Tennant
-Catherine Tate
-Billie Piper
-Elizabeth Sladen
-Freema Agymen
-John Barrowman (Oh dear nowadays)
-Bernard Cribbins
-Eve Myles
-Alexander Armstrong (Mr.Smith)
-Penelope Wilton
not to mention Julian Bleach as Davros creator of the Daleks
You can *bold* a word in TH-cam comments by surrounding it with asterisks (like *bold*) -- but it can get fiddly if you try to include punctuation or spaces or even if you just put punctuation next to but outside of it. TH-cam comment formatting can be a pain.
Now you DEFINITELY need to watch The Sarah Jane Adventures to find out who Luke, her son is, and Mr. Smith, the super computer is and how he has so much power.
The sadly missed Paul O'Grady's cameo was filmed on location of his TV series The Paul O'Grady Show
My favourite episode ever, this is THE crossover. After the unbelievable cliffhanger, the week between this and episode 13 felt like an eternity, the week was full of speculation on who the next Doctor was, it was on the news and everything haha it was mad. This era of the show was total hype!

The Daleks hadn't moved the Earth in that story though. I thought it was a reference to the first story in the Trial of the Time Lords arc (since the Time Lords had that whole business with Ravalox in The Mysterious Planet back in season 23 of the classic era).

Were disappearing?
Jack was at Torchwood and Sarah Jane was seen on the Sarah Jane Adventures set.

In case you want some information and you're not planning on watching "Genesis of the Daleks" from the classic era, here's a quick rundown:
It's the Fourth Doctor's era, he's wildly considered the most popular and iconic of them all, Tennant is a close second.
Ah, yes! Doctor Who. The show that will make you laugh and cry (and sometimes all at the same time). Welcome to the rollercoaster!
The luckiest Dalek in the universe… and immediately the unluckiest.
A couple of things about the episode:
Eve Miles played both Gwen and Gweneth (from the unquiet dead) they are related.
Russel confirmed this to be true.(Do with that with you will.)
Meet Davros: my favorite staple villain of the series.
Here's to you Harriet Jones, here's to you! o7
Agreed!! It was so awesome to see her back and she absolutely redeemed herself. I'll miss her 🥹
It seems normal now but to have multiple shows in the same world come together, all the previous seasons and the spin-offs, in this massive finale was insane pre-avengers. And that cliffhanger!
I must admit, I am MADLY glad that I could still binge all these episodes when I watched them for the very first time. 😅
I started watching the show, just about when series 7's first half finished airing.
*I feel you...* 😔
Because ever since I showed my brother and his wife the episode "Blink" and they absolutely hated it and couldn't finish watching because "cringe" and "logic"....
But there is stuff for anyone in this show.
My favourite episodes of dr who ever😊😢 remember ‘mad’ Dalek Khan he has met the doctor a few times…I felt your pain at the end 😢
Doctor Who a happy show? What? Who said/told you that?? 😂😭
I really had NO idea what I was getting in to 🤣🤣
there are quite a lot of happy moments in the show, but you will have to fight, to get to them....
or as Madame De Pompadur said: " one could endure a world full of daemons, for the sake of an angel"
I was always interested that the TARDIS didn't translate the Judoon language for Donna.
That’s Tommy Knight as Luke Smith, Luke is Sarah’s adopted son, a 13-14 boy at the time of his introduction in The Sarah Jane Adventures, if you want to get to know Luke & Mr Smith,
(the super computer voiced by comedian/game show host Alexander Armstrong,) you’ll have to check out the Sarah Jane Adventures.
Tommy was an age appropriate casting for the role of Luke over the Dawson casting that you see in movies and tv shows, (casting older teens and adults to play younger characters to skirt by child labour laws.)
LOL "Can we have David Tennant as... the Doctor forever?"
I've heard it said many times that if David Tennant had his own way - YES - he would have stayed in the role forever! :)
I think he could easily have done another season.
That bloomin Jason Statham rumour that Tennant would regenerate into him this episode…
🤣🤣🤣
Hey Jules, we feel your pain. As others have said I remember seeing this episode when it came out and thinking holy crap this can not be happening! It's so brilliant to see everyone again - Rose, Martha, Jack, Sarah Jane, Harriet Jones and of course our number one star- Wilf and just as we're cheering the team on - bam, there goes the rug from under our feet. Great reaction as always, tissues and all :)
When this was broadcast in the UK, people were placing bets at shops on who would be the next Doctor. Robert Carlyle was in the lead.
You NEVER EVER get rid of the Daleks, they ALWAYS find a way to
Stay strong - we each have had to face losing "my Doctor" at some point.
She knew that she needed to get to the doctor and smart about the software needed to get the various parts of Dr who universe together.
@@fayesouthall6604 Yup
Omg 11:42 you caught on immediately!
When i was a kid i swore this was gonna be the next bad wolf/torchwood/mr saxon/rose returning bees and planets - hidden clue for season 5 but nobody was talking about it!
Jules really does seem to be like one of the most intelligent people I've ever seen on TH-cam. She's so brilliant she could be a Companion.
@@christianschoff2490At the very least, I'd say she's got the *right kind* of intelligence to be a companion. After all, we've got The Doctor for booksmarts, what a companion needs most of all is emotional intelligence and an eye for the tiny little details that The Doctor misses.
I cracked up at you calling out Harriet Jones before she said her name 😂😂
Her voice is so distinct! And she's introduced herself SO many times, we should remember 🤣
This episode has so many characters in it, it's crazy. Eventually I did watch Torchwood, but when this came out I hadn't seen it yet. I'm looking forward to you getting to see the next episode! Whenever there's more than one part, I always just want to see you react to the next one, but I'll have to wait! Thank you for these as always!
the doctor is never really gone
I had thought the species that 'tried to move the Earth before' were the Time Lords. Line still works.
Spamming comments. Don't worry Doctor Who is a roller coaster. Happy fun episodes are always around the corner and then around the next corner is another heart breaking moment.
So many people wished for 10 and Donna to be forever
Love your reviews on doctor who massive fan of this show
Thank you!!
“Doctor Who used to be my happy show… and now it’s turned into an emotional cry fest.”
Now you’re getting it! 😀
You’re a true Whovian now. ❤
Here we go. - my two favourite episodes. Happy Wednesday x
Yes its a quick line from Gwen but its not the dialogue here its the lack of characters
@@silverbrumbyfan and your missing the point that it would at least still be a bit of a mystery - but if somone comes into the comments to outright say it, then it’s well and truly spoiled. Dude, she’s already watched The Stolen Earth - what’s the use in this? (Rhetorical question, I don’t need you to answer)
