My philosophy is to blend in with the crowd. One camera and one lens. No camera bag or backpack. Comfortable clothing and shoes similar to what others are wearing. No silly hats or tee shirts.
You may have been cautious about covering the fashion subject but this is incredibly thoughtful and helpful advice. On the other hand the advice from the cop in NYC is just based on a very sad reality in the US 🙄
I prefer to look a little bit eccentric, so I'll wear a blazer and a trilby hat and smart shoes with a leather satchel. I feel that makes me look a bit bohemian, or artsy, thus the camera becomes an excusable part of that aesthetic. I get noticed, but I get accepted.
I see way too many photographers carrying big bags and to me, I’m wondering why? A long time ago I learned that if I carry a big bag of lenses, I’m less likely to get the lens I need quickly and therefore missed the shot. I prefer to wear a jacket or two - maybe a vest. I carry all my lenses in my pockets, for quick accessibility. I usually carry three lenses and that includes the one on the camera. I’m looking to blend into the crowd and not stand out in anyway, the only thing I have is my camera around my neck, like a tourist. I find for the most part people don’t notice me at all. So basically, it’s just a vest inside my jacket with multiple pockets for carrying lenses. A few other pockets for the phone and keys and of course, easy access to a lens cleaner cloth, and or filter.
I was in Buenos Aires, wore jeans, black leather shoes grey vest, shirt and a tie, kept my small non-camera bag and camera discreet. Another tourist was wearing a photographer's camera vest, Tilley hat, obvious camera bag and standing on the corner waving his camera about looking for a shot. His camera was robbed from his hand 10-metres in front of me.
I absolutely think the clothing i wear shooting street is critical. So you are going to be recognized gor what you are but if you are presentable, clean shaven not a 3 day scruf. Keep your hair in manner that is presentable. Sharp clothing that says you care about your appearance. If you do this people will be more comfortable seeing you shooting than if you look scruffy, bland or worse sneaky.
I think blending in works when you are average height/weight...as a tall person, I get noticed no matter what I do so I just decided to go with the flow and try not to creep on people cause that would be a pretty unsettling experience for the subject haha
You are absolutely right. That’s why I don’t love to do this kind of videos because I have to generalize a lot but with a lo it of luck we might adapt some things hopefully! Thanks for sharing my friend!
Well-done! Sensible advice. Regarding the use of front shirt pockets for one’s pass/credentials/identification, it is generally true that reaching for a small front shirt pocket is generally less-provocative, and and seen as less potentially-threatening, than reaching for one’s waist area or trousers’ pockets. A weapon would generally make a shirt pocket sag, noticeably, whereas trousers’ waist bands and pockets provide more support and concealment to weapons. Plus, for my own security, a front shirt pocket is more within my “work space,” while photographing. Items carried along my high center area are less vulnerable to stealthy theft attempts.

Why upgrade, you said. 2 years on, you have the X-Pro3 (although I see you still have the X-Pro2). Are the new features of the X-Pro3 worth spending the money? Of course, the X-Pro3 is very hard to find these days.
Haha thanks! Yes, I have the Pro3 as well because for work I need to have two bodies so I use to have two Pro2 but one of them broke so I had to get a new one and at the time there was not a huge difference in price so I got the Pro 3. ( There is not a massive difference to be honest, maybe a little bit faster but I still use the Pro2 a lot )

TLDW; denim jeans and button up shirt. Dress for the season, like ordinary people, with ordinary colors. Don't forget the lip balm and your Casio! When shooting in war zones, keep your press pass handy. Bigger bag for your spare cameras and lenses, and passports. Smaller bag for your hand sanitizer, notebook and a lens. Choose the appropriate bag for the appropriate lenses for the appropriate environment.
@jnonl is so right about smiling, it says you are above board and approachable. One last thing I do is carry buisness cards with just my instagram user name this way when people ask what you are doing with the photos give them the card and avoid a lengthy conversation about contact info.
Today I put a big Parker coat on large pockets waterproof the hood as no thur around it so easy to see out of when working its also very warm with a fleece inside I can carry all my lenses and two cameras with it all in pockets I use it in the cold and wet weather jeans trainers comfy on my feet my gear is a small XT30 normally with a 23mm on it or a 35mm the other camera is a XT1 like you in warmer weather I would use one body one lens I don't work as a full time photographer smart casual clothing good shoes again I tend to go for smaller gear easy to carry I used to use full frame but the cameras much to big for my liking these days found your views helpful Jorge thanks .......
Very tru bout the fashion I enjoy this Convo...i dress down and where i live its hot all the time so its a camera bag, micro fiber tee shirts , sneakers and short pants ... lastly black does not make u disappear ppl still see you with a camera always appear kind and courteous
I would really like a video about visual coherence. If you use a 20mm and a 135mm, they don't really match each other. But a 35 and a 50 do. Some people use a 28 and a 50 or 35 and 85. Maybe the solution is to use a single lens and adapt it to everything? I would really appreciate a talk about that.
The only way to know what works for you is to go out and try it. I find that I go from Fuji 18, 33 and 56 or I mix it up and get a 23, 33, 90. You need to see what works for you.
Wear clothes that are 18% Gray. Makes setting white balance on the go a breeze.
