  • Real estate and housing costs in Jackson, Wyoming, have become unaffordable to many, even those who would be considered wealthy in most other places. It's causing a stark divide between those who can afford to live there and those who work in town but have been priced out of living there. Mark Strassmann has the story.

Hundreds of billions of dollars at zero percent interest (free money that doesnt have to be paid back anytime soon) was given to private equity and hedge funds in 2006-2020 (and its coming back in 2025 no matter who is president) which was used to "take America private" (youll rent forever and you'll like it) which facilitated buying up stocks and bonds (all time highs), businesses (1/2 of NYSE stocks have been bought out/disappeared), homes and apartment buildings (rentals and no starter homes to buy) made this happen, and the Federal govt. couldnt care less.

Part of the issue is people asking $300,000 dollars for something that cost only $100,000 or less.
I just had this debate with the local realtor in my town. I paid $79,000 for my 1800 square foot house and 3/4 acre. I made no upgrades to the house in the 3 years I’ve lived in it, just maintained it. All I’m asking is what I paid and she is telling me to ask $134,000 for it. Why? I’ve done nothing to warrant such a price hike. Now if I remodeled or did landscaping sure I’ll add on the cost of that upgrade, but I’ve done nothing but maintained it. so why?

The economic dynamics in Jackson have been like this for more than 30 years back when I was considering moving there. I didn't move there because I didn't want to drive the pass from Driggs every day for a low paying job. It's the same story in any western ski town. It's just magnified in Jackson because it's perhaps the most beautiful place in the US with extremely limited land and quick airport access. Therefore the .000001 have homes there. Why not look into The Hamptons and places like that too? You will find the same situation. Surprise!

Personally is very hard for me to feel sorry for people like this because they have been driving this issue for many years and when anyone spoke out about it EXAMPLE like Occupy Wall Street. They were told to get a job and they're a bum.
Now 10yrs+ later from that protest that I thought was very valid but somehow it got made political. Likely because they wanted people to shut up and fight between themselves and not the big issue. Put 10 years plus later you see that is a ginormous problem in the United States that the working class isn't getting paid enough money and they need credit cards to fund their ability to live. Now like what I originally said it's hard for me to feel sorry when the working class once a full size SUV or a full-size truck just to get groceries. If people decide to put their foot down and say NO to Big corporations they're going to lose money and they're going to have a change. But the people are so stupid that they are creating the modern day of Kings and Queens in society.
But hey what do I know. I'm on the Spectrum right 🤷‍♂️....🙄

This is being said because the government doesn't really care. They want you to pay your taxes and then they want you to go. So because of that people need to start being Smarter with your daughter and as soon as somebody is giving you a hard time you should stop spending that dollar.
There has been many times in my life that I stopped spending money somewhere out of dislike for something they did to me or something they did overall that's a company. A $1.00 has power. Regardless of how you feel

My guess is NIMBYism is taking place. What exactly is the answer then? Do you just say to people, you can't buy a home here if your income and/or wealth is above a certain amount? Do you, by law, put a ceiling on how much a person can sell a home for, or rent home/apartment for? Do you just outlaw short-term rentals completely, even though the owner is paying property taxes and thus, ought to have a right to rent their property out? It seems to me this is just markets at work... but why aren't new homes, multi-family and single-family, being built to meet demand?
NIMBYism is almost always what creates this problem. People who own property to live in or rent out short or long term, use their "property rights" as the excuse as to why they should be able to do whatever they want with their property under any circumstances. Fair enough, but they only have property rights over THEIR property. This idea that somebody can dictate that no new homes are built, such as a multifamily apartment complex or condo complex to support workforce housing, when it's not their property, has GOT to go. "Public Comment" is fine, but its up to council and mayor to recognize the city needs and not bow to pressure from NIMBYs. The only leverage NIMBYs have is that they'll leave... let them. A race to the bottom in housing prices is what many people claim this city needs.
