I would imagine that the American director and production team of 1965 found Dave rather disturbing in close up. Whereas us Brits couldn't get enough of the little rascal. Those really the days.
This was the beginning of a proud tradition in music cinematography. It was so highest unspoken law of cameramen all over the world. "And Thou Shalt Not Film the Guitarist During the Solo." In honour of this ancient law, even today cameramen will zoom in on the rhythm guitarist during a solo, or they will leave the camera on the bottom of the drum kit, perhaps a few quick cuts of the bassist and singer. There is a lot of room for creativity as long as you're not including one single frame of the guitar solo being played
This music was light years ahead of what Frankie and Annette had been pumping out...
I remember watching this, I was 11 yrs old. Been a Kinks fan ever since.
Cool clips. I know this is lip-synced, but what the heck with not focusing on Dave during the solos?
Baffling, isn't it?
Thanks very much for posting this. You may enjoy Dave’s recent book (Living on a Thin Line), if you’ve not yet read it.
