Scott Awaywithit The needles never track properly, the manufacturers don't care. The motors are reused from older cheaper portable machines, which is part of the issue above, the rest is due to crap tone arm manufacturing. Single use needles, although sacrificial, do not save a record when played with a crooked needle, and often that can't be tuned out of these "machines". The sound quality is also atrocious.
Looks like one of those India-made "crap-o-phones" Did you have to re-work it so that it would function properly? I have heard that most of these don't work properly "out of the box", and will destroy records, and need extensive tweaking for proper function - so much so that many vendors sell them as being "for display only".
Is it still working? I just bought one to see what they were like. It works but speed always too fast even when i put that slider on slow. It's too loud as well and had to put something in the horn. Maybe the needle they supplied are hard tone. Also it winds down before then record has finish most times. It looks alright for being on show but I can't see it lasting long as a usablle player. I think I'm going to get a genuine dated one.
That means you're over cranking it... Cranking also goes into the speed and if it's going to fast even when it's on low it's because you're cranking to much or there is a problem with the record.....
+Neal Wilson old ones are hard work.....better to save your records for a good one with lots of one play needles.....crap ones can be converted to a ipod holder with the head phones inside the trumpet.....even a d.c.run turn taple.....has he desired effect to the non expert.
I got an HMV 101 picnic gramophone made around 1929. All serviced. Great condition. No4 Sound box. Sounds brilliant, and works well. Much better than the horned one. I just keep that one for show.
i'm hoping someone will see this (even though this video is several years old) and possibly help. i just got hold of a wind up gramophone (i'm guessing from the 1910s or 1920s) after my late great aunt, and i can't get it to work. when we try one of the old records it just moves very quickly to the center without playing it. the record plate is also spinning extremely fast without any winding up, and i'm wondering if it's possible that it has been wound up way too much? and if so, do i just let it sort of run out? i appreciate any help. :)
If it doesnt play the record at all you probably dont have a needle on, and the speed could be either the governor inside is missing or the speed is set too fast
Yes. There are 4 different types of steel needles. Extra soft tone, soft tone, medium tone, and loud tone. I usually use extra soft and soft for the 1950s records because they are loud. The pre 1950s I use medium tone, and if you take a gramophone outdoors best to use loud tone needles. Also you need to change the needle after each play. They come in packs of 100. If you want a gramophone best to get an original one such as an HMV 101 or 102. Doesn't ruin records and sounds great.
its a crapophone all REAL gramophones never had brass horns id recommend if you want a gramophone you couid get a portable or a table top you dont have to get a horn gramophone has really such as portables or cabinets have better sound quality due to they were made later on such as in the 1930s
Hii, i bought a gramophone just like this one and when i place the pin on the record, it stops spinning.. Its almost like the weight of the pin is too much coz as soon as i remove the pin the record starts spinning again.. Do u have any solution for this??? Please do reply :)
with as the one on te vid its a remake that are basicly over piriced garbage the reason is that the crappy spring inside alot u havnt wound it up enogh and the pin is called a needle id recomend you to buy a real one as the resulys are amazing :)
back in the 1920s they had cameras you could focus on what you wanted... :)
Nice crapophone. It looks like an indian made HMV, replicated during the 60's and onwards.

Why do we need to change the needle?
Thank you
