Inside Jimmy's Mind: How Karen Nearly Got Whacked

  • Jimmy Conway eliminates practically everyone associated with the 1978 Lufthansa theft at JFK Airport. Karen Hill, his closest friend's wife, is one among those he accuses of knowing too much. Given his deteriorating state of mind, he would want her dead.
But did he truly intend to murder her? And what difference would this have made?

See, I don't think that's the case. Jimmy is too smart to loudly shout "go in there" where anyone on the street could see/hear and have her whacked in the warehouse. If she turned up missing and people found out (people as in regular pedestrians just walking down the street), they would immediately pin it on Jimmy.
He could have been feeling her out, see how trusting she is of him in order to whack her at a later time

I've seen Goodfellas literally countless times but even when I first saw the film as a little kid, I always assumed Jimmy was 100% looking to either murder or kidnap Karen as a hostage. There were obviously no Dior dresses and a couple of sketchy ass guys who pause in silence upon seeing her peering at them so it was definitely not Karen imagining things. Plus Jimmy's expressions, yelling at her to go inside the building, and frustrated look after she drove away should cement that. It would make sense for Jimmy to intend to kill her right then and there due to his profound paranoia and murder-happy attitude about potential witnesses, but I had it more in my head he was looking to kidnap her as leverage against Henry to lure him over and murder him. Then he would have most definitely whacked Karen too.

There were obviously no dresses in the warehouse, but I’ve always wondered what Jimmy’s plan here was. I’ve always felt that it was too late in the game to be killing people who were close to the heist, and Karen wasn’t even involved with that. My guess is that he was gonna either kidnap or kill her in order to lure Henry out of his mouse hole. But seeing how the mob doesn’t take prisoners, it seems more like the latter.

I read somewhere that Jimmy had told Henry to meet up with Roy Demeo to get something from him.
But Henry was smart; he knew of Roy Demeo's reputation, so he carefully approached the situation.
Henry sent Karen ahead to scout for him (pretty dumb move to risk your wife, but very slimy coming from Henry); Karen did enter the famous murder room by herself.
But Roy made no move on her, Karen said Roy looked surprised to see her and was expecting Henry and only Henry.
Roy had taken out women before, so the reason he hesitated to take out Karen has probably not to spook Henry even more and make it harder to get Henry.
She quickly left the place, and meet up with henry a few blocks away and told him that the place looked like a trap.
That's when Henry decided to give up Jimmy.
There's a documentary on youtube, and Henry Hill was standing outside the Gemini Club, and he said on camera this is where Jimmy told him to meet.

In the mid seventies I worked loading and unloading cargo at Kennedy Airport. Every day there was a flight coming in from Iceland that carried a load of caviar which was kept in ice in boxes. One day in particular I remember that while I was busy unloading the plane a unmarked van came up right on the ramp and two guys got out and briefly spoke to the ramp supervisor, my boss, whereupon he told me to load about a dozen boxes of caviar into the van. I did what my supervisor told me to do but later on when I asked him what all that was about he told me that La Costra Nostra had a strong presence at the airport and to never question them. Angelo Sepe (Frank Carbone in the movie) is generally accepted as being the one one who killed Krugman, pretty much certainly on the orders of Jimmy.
The guy wanted half a million dollars as his share of Lufthansa, and was pestering constantly for it.
Sepe wasn't killed by Jimmy and left in a freezer truck, as Carbone was in the movie.
Him and his Mrs were taken out at home by a professional hit team with silenced firearms, probably over robbing a load of cocaine from dealers who were backed and financed by another Lucchese family crew.

The money he gives her “take this it’s a couple of thousand” no doubt he said to the guys that were gonna do it, she’ll have the money. For her own death as well which makes it even crueler! Also Jimmy may have given her the money as he didn’t want to do it himself or see the aftermath either way he wanted to not get his own hands dirty.
2 is his reaction when she leaves, the look of frustration and disappointment “so close” was the look. I think Jimmy had planned to kill no matter what she said or knew.

I used to rehearse in Brooklyn for years and get off on 4th ave and 9 street station right where that scene was filmed at all hours of the night for years. Most people would probably call that area Smith and 9th street. Its truly a creepy place and a great location for a scene like that. I rehearsed music there because its in a mostly industrial area of Brooklyn filled with old style factories and not many if any houses whatsoever. Its not too far from civilization, its Brooklyn afterall, but within like a 5 block square radius or so the place is practically desereted and bands played music there so the loud music at all hours wouldn't bother anybody, so if something went down aint nobody likely to hear any cries for help no matter how loud. Well minus a rare person or two coming off the train near by but that trains schedule at night was once an hour or so and it was far from a popular stop. Theres a little bridge you have down as well near smith and 9th street and the storefront Jimmy wants Karen to walk into that makes the place even more creepy and desereted. Funny enough despite me talking about how deserted the area is I once ran into Matisyahu right around the time he got really famous. Anyway just saying that area is really creepy and was perfect for a scene like that.

Because Paulie, the real Paulie, and Karen were lovers "this happened when Henry Hill was arrested", and, Tommy DeVito, real name Tommy DeSimone, was wacked not because of the made man he killed on the movie "Billy Bats", but because he tried to rape Karen, and Paulie ordered him killed as soon as Karen told him, DeSimmone was a psychopath that was a bit different from his character on Goodfellas , tall and muscular, and a complete sick individual with a desire to murder anyone, it was said that Tommy killed a man in the street just to test his new .38 revolver, the man was a complete innocent person that was just going by, these individuals were all far from innocent, they were vicious, devious and liars.

I always saw Jimmy’s actions as rational self-preservation. Psychopathic and cold-hearted, sure. But not paranoid. If I was in Jimmy’s position, and members of the crew started flaunting their ill-gotten gains, I’d wack those idiots too

Sometimes the wacking is what get's people caught anyway. In real life adding onto the crime with more serious crime isn't a generally smart idea from anyone law enforcement wants.

I think the only big mistake Jimmy made was taking them out one by one, but not all at the same time. He should have gotten them all together and took them out altogether with poison or something, less messy and less chance of someone slipping away.

@@ColorCodeWhite Kill them all with poison? What is this? The Borgias? Nice try in terms of style and lateral thinking, I guess. Even if the modus operandi is more fifteenth century than twentieth. Also, orchestrating a mass killing of several figures in the criminal underworld, with poison, wouldn't be as low profile as you seem to think. Let's just say, supicions would be aroused...

Jimmy is just being pragmatic as usual.
Hes a twisted s.o.b. but he knew how to make money off the books.

In that life your crew is supposed to take care of your family if anything happens to u but that rule applies to made men and jimmy wasn’t a made man and Morrie was barely even an associate so jimmy had no obligation to provide for his wife

How Karen got Tommy killed, she didn’t tell him to kill the main man

The warehouse scene never made sense to me. Jimmy's not planning on killing Karen until she tells him Henry didn't even know she came down there to see him. So he lies and says there's some stolen dresses in the warehouse. He doesn't walk down with her (ie with a gun). She peers in and sees two sweaty meatballs up to no good (I think one is opening a crate with a crowbar.) Sooo... what? Do they have standing orders to kill anyone woman that happens in there? Clearly, Karen (and the adience) know nothing good is going down in the warehouse... Just curious of "the mechanics" of how she was supposed to meet her end.
