  • Featuring 18 classic games from across both the Double Dragon and Kunio-kun (River City Ransom) franchise, and with 11 games localized for the first time, the Double Dragon & Kunio-kun: Retro Brawler Bundle is one of the most fascinating (and deceptive) retro collections released this generation. Is it worth $40? Should you buy the Double Dragon & Kunio-kun collection? Find out in today's Double Dragon & Kunio-kun review for Switch and PS4!

    Short answer is yes, you should buy it it has a lot of amazing games worth the price.
    If you dont mind a few being in Japanese is you can get physical versions with the key games like DD and River City titles are in English in the Japanese version. In japan its called the KUNIO KUN classics collection. The Kunio Kun games are about high school gangsters and its in fact based on Japanese high school dramas. From the 80s so yeah she was in fact offering to F them.

    • @caiusmadison2996

      Earlier than the 80's is what it's based on. The creator was a hot head in school. He was in school in the 60's/70's.

    I picked this up on launch day, and can concur with pretty much everything he said. There are a couple stinkers (like the track & field games) but the majority hold up amazingly well and are a blast to play. One thing worth mentioning is that a lot of that is due to the physics. The engine most of these use had some of the best physics interactions of any 8-bit game, and you can get some really cartoony chain reactions going when the conditions are right. Which is part of how these games can still be legitimately *funny* even 30 years later.
    Plus, just the sheer absurdity of the scenarios. I mean, the basketball game speaks for itself, but what about playing soccer in the rain with constant lightning zapping the players? It's like something out of the Looney Tunes. Or a no-rules, full-contact version of hockey where (especially when playing with friends) you'll spend more time walloping each other with your sticks than actually taking shots? The way the series absolutely revels in its own silliness creates much of the charm.

      Makes sense, Double Dragon was created because at the time it was felt that Kunio wouldn't sell in the west. It did, as Super Dodgeball and River City Ransom sold well. However, the Double Dragon games got worse as they went, Kunio titles never really disappoint.

    When are you gonna do another project like you did for PlayStation all stars? The amount of love and emotion you put in that 2 parter was astounding and ive re watched it like 4 times. Both parts and went and got a copy of the game to relive it. That is easily your best video not only production and editing wise but received as well and would love your commentary on other games you're passionate about.

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I appreciate your kind words! It's not in the same style as the PSAS documentary, but the video that should be coming next week is kicking off a new "series" focused around that sort of passion, inspiration, and excitement! It's probably the closest I've come to that kind of project in terms of the work and interest I'm putting in, and I should have 4-5 of them out by the end of April!
      The PSAS doc is hard to replicate because of how far into that community and history that I was, I essentially chased a similar vibe all of 2019, and those videos did very well but weren't exactly what I wanted to make every video. This next attempt, I hope, will nail that ideal

    Excellent video as always. Initially I was very happy to see DD 2, 3 and Soccer (the one with the lightning effects) as they were one of my favourites back in the day. But 40$ for DD 2, 3, River City Ransom, Soccer, and(from your review) Basketball seems way overpriced. The fact that they have squeezed in duplicates among the paltry list is beyond me. You told that this was the greatest retro collection. But in my opinion, none has beaten Sega Genesis Classics Collection which has 3 times more games but costs 3 times less (in a sale)... Regardless of my love for DD 2 & 3 -- one of my most favourites of the NES gen -- I still can't pay for something which doesn't offer me half the value I pay for. I'll keep an eye out for sales and hopefully they sell it sensibly.

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do wanna note that I didn't say this was the _best_ retro collection, just that it likely has the best online functionality, and that it's the most fascinating (due to how deceptive the name is, and how weird Kunio-kun is)!

    Better than all these combined check out Ultimate Double Dragon for Openbor it is easily the best beat em up to ever exist and the insane amount of moves possible alone (60 moves between Billy and Jimmy) will keep the game from ever getting stale. The creator recently got one of the original artists from Super Double Dragon to make sprites of Double Dragon Characters missing from that game. He did an amazing Abobo and just finished Linda for the next demo I cannot wait! It unfortunately ruined Super Double Dragon for me because its so good haha

I just recently received the physical copy of this game from Playasia. And then, Limited Run Games announces that they're bringing it to the Switch as well (all in English). Just my luck. I guess I'll have to eventually sell my Playasia version.
