  • This is the day I have been most excited about all garden season! Last year I attempted growing sweet potatoes for the first time and haphazardly threw some slips in some left over hay and those were the only ones that grew. So being super excited to find out I could grow sweet potatoes up here in Michigan, I decided to go for it all out in my Ruth Stout Garden and it was a grand success.
Thank you all for watching my gardening videos, they are some of my favorite times to share with you all. My garden is my happy place!

The Ruth Stout method worked for me in a positive way. I harvested ordinary potatoes, far more than i can handle, from an area just a fraction in size to what you have there. I live in Melbourne suburbia.Nice to see you reaping the fruits of your labour.........so satisfying.......Best Regards.

Excuse my grammar, English is not my native language.
I love watching sweet potato harvesting video. Mostly US and Britain is what I watched on TH-cam. My mom used to plant sweet potatoes when we still had our farm. But she plant them differently though. She uses the runners cut them in even foot and a half length then coil the bottom end and bury it few inches deep into the ground with few inches sticking out of the ground. Then when it's ready to harvest, she only pull the big ones out or just enough to boil for snacking in between our lunch and dinner. She leave the rest to grow bigger. The variety we have here that is common is the purple and white skin orange flesh ones and the Japanese variety. I really don't know the specific name of the ones we have here (Philippines). And did you know that the runners will have more potatoes too if you let it grow longer even if you already harvest the main roots? My mother still harvesting more sweet potatoes for months after her first harvest. But I guessed it's because we kinda have summer all year long except the rainy season which is your summer season :) but it doesn't hurt the plant because it's planted on the hillside.
    I missed gardening.

Awe you are soooo cute! Nothing more fun then seeing the excitement of someone seeing what they have produced through their gardening! I would be as tickled pink as you were too! I don’t blame you one bit for showing all your enthusiasm, I was wondering if you did try to dig down any further with a shovel and if you found any more further down or is that just the nature of sweet potatoes they grow closure to the top? I’ve never grown them before and I only remember seeing the traditional white potatoes that my great uncle used to grow and we had to use a pitch fork to turn over the soil to find the potatoes and some were down very deep below the mound of dirt that he had pushed up around his potato plants. Also I was wondering if you can grow your own “slips” for next year by just taking cuttings from the sweet potato vines and putting them in water? At the moment I’m trying to grow my own stevia plants by putting in small cups with potting soil and dried coconut substrate (the outside brown bark from a coconut) and I took and stuck my clips into some rooting hormone and put them in the little cups and then put each individual cup into a ziploc bag to create a little mini greenhouse environment for each one...this way I can open and close the bags when I see a lot of humidity forming inside the bags I can open them up throughout the day and close them over night to keep them warm and moist. Fingers crossed it’s going to work with my stevia. Just wondered if the same method may work to grow sweet potato slips?? 🥰🤞🇨🇦

Yea. Sweet potatoes. So many ways to cook them. They were my late, sweet mother’s favorite vegetable. She grew up having them as a treat after school. Grandpa would put raw ones on the hearth and they were soft by the time she and her siblings got off the bus.

Nice! Our local county seat Gilmer, Texas has a yam festival mid October called the Yamboree. Enjoy it every year. Basically its an old style County fair honoring a local staple, Texas sweet potatoes. Pies galore, fancy cows and gospel singing. Love it.

Great beautiful harvest of your sweet potatoes Rachael! I was told by an old lady that you can eat the leaves of the sweet potato plant and that they are delicious ! She said you can eat them in salads , stir fries, or cooks like you do other greens and fry the leaves with a little oil and butter like you do fried cabbage or boil them like you would collards , turnips or mustard greens ! She said they have a slightly sweet taste and are very delicious ! She also said sny little potatoes left behind will regrow plants and make sweet potatoes next growing season !! I thought it was great info especially with our food shortages were now having ! God bless and I love your videos ! ❤️🙏✝️🙋🏻

You are so adorable, and it’s not just your fancy chicken boots (I have those too!). Sweet potatoes are one of the easiest crops to grow. Did you know the leaves are edible?
I’ll bet your harvest this year will be even better with your experience.
    Blessings...

Why didn't you eat the leaves and stems of the Sweet Potatoes. This vegetable is packed full of Vitamins and Minerals. The whole plant is edible. Also, you should plant and try Amaranth. This plant is also packed with all the Vitamins necessary for good health. You can use the seeds as Flour substitute. Another plant you should try is Jerusalem Artichoke. This plant grows tubers like the potato. Smaller in size. It will reduce blood sugar which helps with Diabetic problems. You should try Ground Cherry's, Polk Salad, Passion Flower. This plant produces a fruit that makes a fine edible. It's leaves can be used as a Sedative and are edible too. A money crop you could grow that most people think is a weed is Dandy Lion. The entire plant is edible. You can dry the roots. Chop into small pieces then roast and grid into course or fine grounds for a wonderful cup of Coffee substitute. If you would grow some Chicory, you could do the same and add this to the Dandy Lion which in my opinion enhance the flavor. Dandy Lion roots are bring around $7 to $ 12 a pound the last time I checked pricing. There are so many more edible plants that people are scared to try, like Purslane, Plantine, and others not mentioned here. I know you did not ask for advice. I was just wondering why you and your family didn't try this edible out? Thank you for your time in your mini doc.
