This is my all time favorite song, which I love the story behind its composition by our Queen Kapiʻolani to our King Kalākaua. I love Dennis Pavaoʻs rendition as well.
Mahalo no keia mele... he nani no! Hoolohe au me ka mana'ona'o pu i ka na'au o Kuini Kapiolani i kona haku 'ana i keia mele no kana 'iwi polena pono'i... Aue ke Aloha e!
I have heard other expressions of this song, but this one...this one touches me like no other. The depth of love expressed by the composer of the song for her beloved and the unassuaged tenderness of her longing for him at his passing while away from her is all embodied in the gentleness of Sean’s singing.
This version best depicts what this song is all about! I have to research what the translation is in English, but, I didnt need the english lyrics to speak to me and touched my heart. Heavenly voice and it speaks to my heart
He manaʻo healoha No ka ipo lei manu He manu kuʻu hoa Noho mai i ka nahele ʻIʻiwi o uka Polena i ka ua ʻElua māua I ka pō ua nui Ua o Hanalei Anu au māʻeʻele Ua anu hoʻi au I ka ua noe anu Nā hau o Māʻihi `Au ana i ke kai Nā ulu o wehi Pūnohu mai ana Haʻina ka puana No kalani heleloa
Sean must be a very special man to be able to portray the story, the music and the beautiful blend of music and voices -- I would love to sit at his knee and just listen (I am an 80 yr old lady).
Such depth of love has not been shown by many composers and performers. To sit here listening to this in tears of sadness for the love of another and the love lost from death of a beloved can not be very well expressed in such depth by many.
Those 23 people who thumbs down on this song and the musician.I what to say to these 23 people 2 things.you have no love in your heart.and you are lost in darkness.
Written as a poignant love song by Queen Kapi'olani for her husband, King David Kalakaua, when he was away on a voyage to America. He never heard it, because several weeks later he lay dying in a San Francisco hotel room (1891).

My mom taught me this dance, it's so beautiful. Joyful tears to my eyes.
Walked down the aisle to this song for my wedding. Love it!

My mom use to have most of his albums. It was nice to hear someone so nostalgic.
Always loved this song but never heard it sung this way. What a beautiful blend and rhythm. LOVE it!!!

Always in deep emotions with running tears in listening to a deep mele like this, well executed and beautifully sung.
