Great car! We had a 1965 when I was a kid, replaced in 1972 by a Peugeot 304 wagon, if you can believe that. Ours was the same color as yours ("Sand"?), with caramel colored seats. My dad loved it, my mother not so much--she was very short and said that she felt like she was sitting on the floor, and the outboard handbrake always snagged her stockings. But it was a well-built, reliable, roomy car that only rusted a little in New England. We all thought it rode hard--only recently did I learn that the wagons had higher spring rates than the sedans. Your restoration is beautiful and you've made some smart modifications.
Nice to see Genevieve, again after a full restoration, I remember, when you picked her up, then started to proceed to dismantle it, then had it sandblasted, and finally painted, they are better than the new cars👍👍👍👍👍👍
I had a British Racing Green Amazon wagon, the paint had no gloss to it at all. Unsurprising as I lived on the island of Orkney off the north coast of mainland Scotland. I drove that wagon to Newcastle where I caught the ferry to Bergen in Norway, then across to the Baltic and back. I saw lots of saloons, but not a single other wagon. This would have been in the late 1990s. It’s great to see yours in such good condition, well done sir
I’m in the capital of Australia. We lovers of real Volvos are spread afar. I was once in an underground car park in Gothenburg. One just this style was there. Dusty. Perhaps a storage agreement with the hotel owner? Someone had used their finger to write in the dust. I did not read or write, Swedish, many languages, as well as I do know. I wrote the word down (1988; a File O Fax was still a useful tool). Back in the hotel, asked a cleaning lady what the word meant? “It is the Swedish word for ‘ugly’” 😞. Since then, since my first 140 series in Copenhagen (an approx $200 saloon in blue with the chrome front grill; very early; ex taxi); I have loved ‘real’ Volvo. Think the diaphragm in engine mounted very basic mechanical pump may be no good (it’s 50 years old after all). Rear gearbox oil seal leaks a little bit: 50 years again. All electrics, upholstery, springs, structure, fine. A question: Should I start to put stuff about the car on my TH-cam channel? Any of you, are you interested in seeing a white RHD 1970 Pre facelift four door being put back on the road by a disabled guy in Australia? It’s the 8th Volvo I have owned. I currently own three, a Mercedes (1969), a couple of old Peugeot’s and a 1977 AUDI 100E 5 cyl 4 door saloon. I’m a European car freak; but nothing beats a real Volvo. Nothing. Another question. I’m pretty sure that this one is a ‘She’. I’ll put the delivery movie up if you like. Polite replies only; I have good kids that don’t like bad language; A name for her? I usually use the letter V. We had a 66 wagon in light blue with black and the amazing wood slat rack. It was the only car my father bought new and it was my first car through college. I miss it to this day. Thank-you for the amazing tour of your car David. I absolutely love it.
Dear David Bello. 👍👌👏 Extremely well done, Sir! Congrats! She is very pretty. I especially like the green interior (and not only because I simply love nearly everything that is green). Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all of you.
It's things like this that make me genuinely happy. It does make me sad that it's taken this long for my fellow countrymen to realize the importance of preserving cars like these! Like, sooo many times when i've stopped to fill my up Amazon there will be an old man appearing out of nowhere telling me how happy he is to see an old Amazon again, "I used to have one just like it but in a different color" is almost standard at this point haha
It's the same color as my 66 I had . The grill is different. The ignition key would start to crack over time and I had to keep getting new ones made. I solved the problem by replacing the cigarette lighter with a push button switch to engage the starter. It fit the hole with no modifications. to the dashboard.
Nice! I have a wagon. Love how you put overdrive in it. I'm looking for advice as to opening the rear door (it's stuck - won't release). I plan to get at it from the inside and try to find the release which apparently isn't working from turning the handle.
I have my ‘67 Amazon (Kombi) 122S Wagon, listed on Craigslist on Big Island, Hawaii, right now, that is pretty awesome, too; though not brand-new looking like David’s, she sure is a head-turner and a blast to drive, over here! Search for it on Craigslist, if you’re serious! Another guy wants it, from Maui, but he can’t get over here till June, and I doubt that it’ll still be available by then! Mahalo!
A really fine job David, I'm sure you are happy with the end result. It's been quite a journey. A bit of slack in the steering? May adjust out a bit. Don't adjust tight!!! Steel or alloy timing gears? A bit of whistle going on there. Brave choice with the Mikunis, they are often hard to get just right. As you found with the downdraught Weber, what should work, sometimes doesn't. 👍
The steering is actually quite firm with almost no play. The adjuster nut is almost all the way in so I suspect a worn box but it's OK as is. The timing gear is fiber but I do hear some weird noises out of both our B20s after rebuild. As for the Mikunis, I'm quite impressed with the power delivery once I cleaned and adjusted the needles. I'll never go back to Webers but only recommend SUs for their simplicity and dependability. It's nice to be able to compare both setups side by side
@@DavidBello Yes, once the amount of thread showing above the nut goes below about 1 1/2 threads it's getting pretty worn. Best to keep your eyes open for a much better one as there is no way to repair the worm. Volvo drivers with these boxes do get very tolerant! Driving with a good box can be a revelation.
Do regs prevent the fitting of original seat belts? They were very unique with just a steel ring on the tunnel and the buckle release on the end of the belt.
@@DavidBello The originals in mine were 3 point and the first that could be done up and undone one handed. I expect that the webbing would be gone but I wonder if there is any company that could replace the webbing? And add a retractor. The 122S wasn't too bad with fixed belts but 2 cars later I had a Peugeot 403 and couldn't reach the hand-brake with the belt done up.
Sweet. I guess it never rains in California and that's why you don't have any windscreen wipers. I'm a swede and I drive a 1988 Volvo 745, great car. I have owned several other Volvos but never an Amazon. Strange.
VP Autoparts has a full seatbelt kit available that you can bolt up in place of the originals. No modification needed. I use them on all the old cars I build
So much work, I had that same exact color combination but when I went to repaint napa did not match it correctly, It was a fun ride while it lasted, totally alien ride compared to todays modern cars, I always loved the sound of a b18 motor and a bmw old airheads
Its a real pleasure viewing what you have done with this wagon. I recently purchases a 1967 Volvo 121 wagon from a guys yard in Santa Cruz, Ca. While it has floorboard issues,, my biggest problem is locating glass for it. It is missing 8 out of the 12 glass segments. Any thoughts on locating door and rear side glass sections in California? My Volvo experience comes from taking a 59 PV544 from a field outside of Fresno and building it to the point of running for 3 years in 24 Hour of Lemons rallies.
Hi David . hawe folowd you since this projekt started , It has have som Bumps & Curves but it turned out Amazing =) A friend has A 65 POLICE verson dark green Its some neat futers on that one !! Dan in Sweden,
I appreciate you sharing this beauty, it is very inspiring to see! So the fuel pump with glass lid originally had steel tubes that fit onto cone shaped fittings on each side of the pump but I saw you had fitted ordinary fuel hoses. Do you happen to remember which fittings you used between the pump and the hoses? I'm intending to fit a fuel filter on my B16 so those fittings like those would sure come in handy.
I had one of those Wagons way back when. Also wife got a 67 Sedan brand new when she was a teenager. I still have the bill of sale. These were not cheap cars and a new one cost close to 3 grand.
David, what exhaust are you running on this car? I'm looking into the Simons sport exhaust for my 220S and am curious if you have their stock style unit.
I'm restoring the same car, only in green. You mention that you have Mikunis installed on your 2.0 L, Can you please tell me the size of them, I've looked them up on the performance website and there's 3 different HSR models . Do they fit on the orriginal intake? Also what shocks are have you installed? Congrats on the finish , looking stunning!
