Munawar Iqbal Faruqui is a Mumbai-based comedian who landed in jail for 37 days after Hindutva groups objected to his jokes and didn’t let him perform at a New Year’s Day show this January. In this interview, Faruqui opens up to Tanushree Pandey about his life, comedy and getting targeted in India.

Now even if I accept (which I most certainly don't!!) that it was only a joke on a song (piya ghar aaya) and not on Hindu religious figures, can he prove this by also sharing instances where he made similar comical and abusive references to the Islamic God, Islamic prophet and members of Islamic prophet's family while making jokes about other funny situations? That would conclusively prove that he is an equal opportunity offender (for lack of a better term)
