Glad to hear the mains dealer with the head issue have fired themselves from ever doing business with Barum Engines again. It saves you the trouble. I had a similar experience with an ex-client. After I had called them to straighten up things to formalize our parting of the ways, they sent a snarky email. My response was “That’s super. You carry on and have a wonderful life”, knowing full well that they’ll just carry on burning bridges with anyone worth dealing with.

I worked for a long while in electronics retail and dealt with various customer complaints and returns over the years. When someone suddenly becomes aggressive and flies off the handle, you know you've touched a nerve to put them on the defensive and that they're guilty about something and they know it. It's the quieter and polite people that are usually the honest ones and the loud aggressive one that have screwed up and looking for someone to blame.
I hope it all works out for you in the end. Best regards.

In my experience with 18 years running my own telecommunications company, it's the big companies that drag the chain on payments while the little ones are almost always within credit terms. If I'm special ordering and/or drop shipping then it's always payment up front.

Hi Lee. You an the team have done a fantastic job the last few months with the shop changes. Well done. JFI, is it worth running a mop over your new floor weekly before the oil and grime beds in. That was my job as an apprentice!!! The shells incorrectly sent, send them back. You do right with the main dealers, they're not interested if you go bust when they owe you money, sure they hope for it all the time. They wouldn't release a car without being paid.

"Well done. JFI, is it worth running a mop over your new floor weekly before the oil and grime beds in" Good suggestion. We used to sweep and mop our workshop floor every night before everyone went home. Doing this gave us a nice clean workshop that was waiting for the guys at 7.00am every morning.

The dealers want the operating capitol that's provided by companies such as Barum Engines to loan them the money for 1 - 3 months (depending on terms). Their credit card companies are happy to let them make payments slapping on heavy interest charges but dealers don't expect YOU the small business to charge them interest for delaying payment until you chase them down.
It doesn't surprise me that they're going to whine the loudest. It think it's great to lend them a sympathetic ear and tell them 'your sorry, but that's the way IT"S GOING TO BE FROM NOW ON.
"We made a deal with the bankers.. They're not building engines, and we're not loaning money"... Besides, time is money and it takes time to chase down that money when instead Barum should be doing what it does to pay the bills. Building great engines.
Everyone stays in their own lane.

You can print out a list of the dealers and other "customers" that you do not deal with. Then put this in a prominent place inside your workshop, where delivery drivers and your other customers can see it. Put a big heading on it that says Barum Engines Hall of Shame, or Barum Engines Black List

  • @TheMadManPlace
    @TheMadManPlace 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Dealers are the worst - ESPECIALLY when it comes to work that is being done under THEIR warranty.
They know that they have to pay the bill and they try to palm as much of the costs of the job onto the motor rebuilders.
Many years ago the first small 1100cc Golf motor had a nasty habit of burning valves.
So every time we got a Golf head in with burned valves the instruction was to re-face the valves and seats - DO NOT REPLACE THE VALVES.
Of course a thousand KM later the head was back as a warranty ON US and a NEW SET OF VALVES WAS DEMANDED.
VERY QUICKLY all the machine shops banded together and made it policy that NO GOLF VALVES WOULD BE REFACED.
Eventually Volkswagen brought out a different valve that was able to survive in our climate (hot as opposed to the relatively cold European climate)
Some machine shops went bust and MANY people decided to NEVER BUY A VOLKSWAGEN PRODUCT AGAIN.
DON'T take crap from dealers, their main intent is to SCREW YOU.

You will find, that it is usually the big companies that are the worst payers.
A small firm that I used to work for, obtained most of their business from a very large company, who shall remain nameless.
They were always more than happy with the work we did for them. However, they increased their payment terms from thirty days, to ninety days, in one jump.
When we told them that we couldn't afford to work on those terms, the reply was basically take it or leave it...

Purchase orders, multiple levels of authorisation and NET30 are the staple of big business where the requestor/authorisers go no where near any of the funds, if they are on NET30 terms they should also be ticking interest if they aren't paying.
I work for an education provider, we have a corporate credit card - but only allowed to request to spend on it if we are going to use that company as a one off, or as replacement for petty cash, it's a headache.

@yer723 In general yes, but, the dealer HAS already made accusations of poor workmanship AND possibly may offer that opinion to others; unbeknownst to you. You have to take steps to protect your own interests for possible future developments. A 'Dealer' is no 'Joe Blow' offering opinions.

8:26 It's always a one way street, mate. They want paying immediately, and they also want 20th of the month following credit for themselves because with their turnover, they can earn a lot of interest on all their suppliers' money in up to those 50 days, on average 35 days, before they must pay them. I had a contract once where they wanted to put all suppliers on 90 days plus 20. I just said *_"No. I can't get those generous terms at the supermarket buying your products. Not even the 20th of the month following!"_*

Great news on the dealership not contesting their impending court summons (they never had a leg to stand on and simply resorted to bullying tactics so good riddance).
Having worked in a number of main stream and prestige dealerships in the past I can assure you that they do have a number of company credit cards and can (when they need to) obtain a purchase order number within minutes if they really need too. The issue is that they want all suppliers on 60-90 days terms and customers on payment in advance or on collection. They want it all stacked in their favour and have no regards for small to medium sized suppliers potentially going under from monies owed.
You have saved yourself a lot of hassle and heart ache by dropping the credit accounts - well done mate.

Most likely, main dealers do not actually have a card number relating to their bank accounts.. and do all payments via internet banking... I know here in NZ that is the case.. hence the reason they don't do this. Not sure how the banking works in UK, here we have a 2hour turnaround on payments from non-like(same bank) and immediate with same bank.

You could give the main dealer/ regular customers a 2 or 4 week payment term. Might be more difficult for large company’s to pay before collecting as it has to go through the accounts desk/ higher management.
I don’t work in the automotive industry but we have an accountant come in every week to settle our invoices and we don’t really pay anything over the phone/ by card.

You say the courts don't know about things, Firstly thier experts on law , to become a judge you firstly have to become a solicitor, then a barrister, then you wait several years between each stage. A judge gets assigned to a case because he is an expert in that field. Secondly they have an army of experts, they can consult. The guy with the MG. You should state you never had a contract with them, then it would be up to him to prove he had contract with you. Over the years I've represented myself in court, were the judge as help me no end , believe me judges don't lie bullies, and liars and they hate people making false claims and bar these people from ever suing people ever again

Just tell them you're offering them the same payments terms as they are offering you, pay up first or "do one".

Credit accounts and 30 ,60,90 day accounts are the death of a lot of good small businesses. Only takes one full engine rebuild not to be payed fer 90 days, leaves that business operating on iou,s until they eventually get paid. Which is great, but don't know of A dealer or supplier that takes IOU's.

If that main dealer ever calls you again for some work, tell them that you are very busy and not taking on any work for the next 6 months.

Yes, writing bills you know you won't get paid for tax purposes is a thing and in many countries, probably all of them, illegal. The funny thing is, the tax office will look into this practice if they see it statistically too often at a company they audit where the number of unpaid receipts is too high or they all seem to be for "odd things" like a reverse warranty bill instead of a regular claim where they would get the money back through a normal warranty process without having to bill for it. Or, sometimes, if someone was to whisper in their ear that they received one of these " remarkable love letters from a Nigerian prince". Chances are, said prince has proclaimed his affection to more than one company in the recent past..... Not sure how it works in the UK but in many countries once the tax office thinks you have been writing fraudulent receipts it's up to you to prove they were legit to avoid getting big fines and possibly personal criminal prosecution. Just mentioning this, not suggesting you do anything with it at all.

I think you will lose with that argument. You should have simply stated the claimant had no standing. Your contract was not with him. Once you get down into pcv valves and he-said, she-said you are entering the Lion's Den ...
That theory about writing it off against tax is wrong. When they issue the invoice, that adds to their turnover and profits, when they write it off it puts the turnover/profits back to where it was. No benefit. I
