  • While catching lobster, multiple waterspouts touched down a short distance away. With plenty of lobster in the box, a great opportunity presented itself to film a close encounter with a weather phenomenon. Fortunately, this time I had a video camera! This is not for anybody to try EVER and this is a delicately calculated risk based on dozens of fluid variables that change by the second. Waterspouts are typically short lived F0 rated tornadoes on the water with winds under 72mph. This was a likely an F0 waterspout, yet was strong enough to completely open my deck hatches and forcibly move the boat more than I expected. The approach was intended to go with the wind at high speed to minimize the effect, yet provide the fullest, safest experience. Again, don't ever do this! If you do, you're gonna need a bigger boat!!

      that is called THE DARWIN AWARD
      numb nuts will learn once he tangles with a storm spout , which is a tornado that touched down on water.
      they develop the same way as any tornado. From a severe thunderstorm at the rear south west quadrant of the storm , outside the rain shaft almost always from a wall cloud they ARE EXACTLY what I said a Tornado. just as powerful ,
      dangerous, DESTRUCTIVE and DEADLY as any tornado that forms over land. but let DOO-FUSS find that out for himself THE HARD WAY.

      @@williammoses6232 This is not necessarily true. Yes it is common for tornados to move over the water in which they are waterspouts. However, "non-tornadic" waterspouts are actually much more common and are what is shown in the video here. Still, point is taken that it was not the safest move, though highly entertaining, to drive a boat that close to one!

      @@williammoses6232 Also with watersprouts debris isnt quite as much of a factor. Getting this close definitely wasn't safe, but they were able to. You'd have to be suicidal to try this with a tornado on land. Youd get clocked by a rock or you know... or an 18 wheeler. Depending on the strength of course 😁

    Thanks for the positive feedback. I generally wouldn't call a watespout innocent, but more of situational threat. I'm happy to have the chance to open a door to a perspective that hasn't existed on a public format. I don't think this video should make people in these situations feel safer or try this because I did. I believe the greatest threat in my situation was the lightning that developed at the end of the event, where we quickly went into clear weather to avoid that possibility.

    There are two types of waterspouts: fair-weather and tornadic. I think, do to the number, size and strength of the funnels, and size of the clouds that these are fair-weather. The clouds are just a thin stretch of cumulus clouds, not a huge mesocyclonic super cell thunderstorm. These also fit the fair-weather description in that they aren't moving much and don't seem to be producing over 50 MPH winds. Still a very cool video, just not quite as crazy as it seems. If that were a tornado waterspout, there would be huge waves, blistering rain and wind, lightning, and possibly hail. But, like I said, still cool.

    • @marshallbs
      @marshallbs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think they are still dangerous for a boat that size, especially heading at it at high speed. Even a minor rain squall could capsize a little boat like that if the wind gets under it while skipping off a wave.

    They're usually EF-0 because they do no observed damage. The scale is how much it eats not how strong it is. A tornado with almost 200 mph winds could still be EF-0 if it lands in a grassy field and only stays in the field

    • @tftrainman
      @tftrainman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jon is exactly right. Aside from popular belief the enhanced fujita scale is based upon damage done to fully anchored structures. Therefore yes a water spout or tornado could be throwing out 200mph winds and still be classified as only an EF0. Just look at the Moore Oklahoma tornado. It had EF5 windspeeds but never actually done EF5 damage that's why it was only rated an EF4.

They do create low pressure zones, but nothing strong enough to really suck. They aren’t tornadoes and are not tornadic because they don’t contain mesocyclones, the things that create tornadoes. They can’t become stronger than tornadoes because like I said, they don’t contain a mesocyclone that’s can strengthen the waterspout. They are landspouts on water.

    Crazy! btw, not all waterspouts are tornadic. Many are fair weather waterspouts, formed by swirling columns of rising warm humid air over a slow moving weather system. Tornadic ones drop out of powerful mesocyclones, just over water that's all.

    Actually a waterspout kinda is a tornado. It's simply a tornado that has touched down over water. Since water is much heavier than air to lift, the winds in a waterspout are much weaker than those of a tornado - only 40-60 mph. Although they have been known to cause damages when boats have attempt to run through them, like you did, they are generally not considered too dangerous. They can change to a normal tornadoes if they move over land.

    I honestly would really like to do that. Those winds probably averaged about 65 mph... But if I were in these guys' shoes, I would probably freak out and get out of there right away, considering it would be my first time even seeing a tornado or waterspout ever. I would have to be on a bigger, stronger boat with someone experienced in boat operation.

  • @wmsantiagophotography

    Very cool indeed, tornado chasing in an open top boat. Kind of puts those guys in their homemade tornado proof tanks to shame. My curiosity always get in the way of common sense, but it look like it was quite a rush. Great video.

  • @kjgophish
    @kjgophish  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm not a meteorologist, but a tornado is typically produced by an intense rotating super cell storm over land with very high cloud tops (40 thousand feet plus) that is the result of hot/cold air producing violent sheer. This waterspout came from a cloud maybe 5 thousand feet high from a typical afternoon rain shower, born because there is zero surface friction from land, houses, trees etc. I see maybe 15 a year. Ever see a dust devil on America's Funniest Home Videos? Same thing minus land.

  • @gagago302

    That tornadic supercell is what's really beautiful. Question: If a rotating supercell is over the ocean is it then considered a tropical depression? Basically, are these supercells a catalysts of tropical storms and hurricanes?

    • @The3rownie
      @The3rownie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Are these really considered tornadic waterspouts? They look like regular ones... there would be more severe weather associated with tornadic waterspouts, no? They would be much stronger.

    • @gagago302
      @gagago302 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well any supercell - defined by the presence of a mesocyclone - is textbook tornadic (tornados are solely produced by mesocyclones). We can see two of them (one to the left, and one to the right, which was the one I was talking about; you can see that the rainfall in confined to the deepest point of the meso's depression. Therefore it we have to say that these are true "water tornados" (top - down) than a waterspout (bottom - up) - I.e. structure of a landspout/dustdevil/whatever you want to call it. I do agree with you that these are really weak tornados though; obvious ef0 ropes. But still, my main question is whether these supercells over water are what feel into (create) tropical depressions; the precursor to tropical storms and hurricanes. I think I'm in need of a meteorologist that specialized in tropical storms to explain all of this. But to be fair, I really have no strong ethos on this issue beyond what most people learn in high school science classes; definitely take my explanation/deduction with a grain of salt. I'm just a amateur TH-cam speculator.

    I've been trying to hit one of those in Lake Erie in Ohio. We get them all the time except when you're really looking for them. For the not-so-smarts out there... as Kevin stated, it's a waterspout not a Tornado. Tornados are created in super-cells... water spouts can be considered non-super cell tornados. They form when cold air flows over warm water or visa versa. If there was an F scale, they would be a -3. You get higher speed winds from sticking you head out a car wondow!! Nice Video
