I’ve never forgotten a comment in a thread when someone said that they once crocheted a lovely shawl for someone and next time she was round their house it was lining the dog basket. A lesson for us all.
That might be a huge compliment from the dog, my dogs fall in love with stuff and I just hand it over because dogs. It might not be but if the dog loved it then maybe that was ok, better than no-one loved it. Ungrateful recipient, though.
algorithm blessed me with another hit! Another idea is to give them an old make that you don't want anymore. Made a hat 2 years ago that is perfectly fine but you never wear it? Wash that thing and wrap it up with a bow!
I sewed my cousin a tote bag. I had deessed it up with the names of her dogs on one side + a 9 square grid in her favorite colors + added a button in the center of each quilt square. The other side had words that expressed her love for her favorite breed of dog. Oh the bag was quilted. It had a lining. And all the edges were sealed with overstitch and french seamed. Took me 2 weeks and like 70 hours. Sent it to her for Halloween. Not a word at all from her.
This was recommended to me and I have to say that I love this. It's realistic but they are still good gifts, even if you don't really want to. Or if your husband/mom/cousin tells you "oh, you didn't make something for ... " until the last minute
TY never thought about potholders. I like having small & fast random projects that were fun. And keep on hand for surprise giveaway gifts to those I see that need a boost during holidays. A small granny square tree can bring untold joy to an unsuspecting person that has to work to hard and is under appreciated and is scraps plus 30 mins max.
I love this. We all need to acknowledge that elephant in the room or more to the point, Where is that Elephant I made for you last year?! Yes, lesson learned. Great sensible ideas Sarah.
Great ideas. I keep a little stack of items that I’ve made but don’t like the finished product or in the end doesn’t suit me. I give those to the people who don’t meet my make-worthy threshold. Have a great thanksgiving with your family 🍗
My first time seeing your vids. You are adorable, and I LOVED this. "I made this for you because I felt obligated" is an annual problem for many of us.
If people don’t appreciate a handmade gift, I give them a crochet kit. It allows me to spend my time on gifts for others, and the person receiving the kit could potentially appreciate the craft more.
As someone who makes gifts for the holidays each year for the past 4 years or so, I really appreciate the suggestions & hope you'll make more of these videos! I love your honesty & your energy lol... Liked & subscribed with all notifications on. 🥰 I'll be binging the rest of your videos while I work on finishing up this hat I'm working on for someone in need.
I particularly like the first minute or so of this video!!! BUT if we have to make, these are GREAT suggestions! My MIL has made many scrap yarn baskets for gifts and we LOVE them! She made me a large one that stays in the trunk of my car to hold groceries/purchases. She made each of my kids a smaller one (maybe 12” in diameter) that they use for their toys or when we take road trips. They’re so useful and really pretty! Highly recommend for gifts!
Thank you for this video. I love the idea of using scrap yarn to make baskets to give as gifts.❤. It will help me reduce my stash so I can purchase more yarn.😂
@LecaroJ Hi. I have several 'fussy' people that are hard to gift. They don't want homemade, don't want store-bought, so I am donating their gift money to local animal rescue shelters or plant farms this year...🤞🏻.
I love fast easy projects any time of year. My favorite gifts for the people I didn't like crafting for were usually men who were pressuring me for a particular scarf I would make but, you know, my heart just wasn't in it. They got the ugly tie and yes I crocheted it. One most terrible uncle actually liked it and wore it to a couple more Xmas gatherings. His wife laughed every time...a knitter who KNEW. Tee-hee😂 haha. One of my favorite things to crochet are little decorative bags that I can put a little something in so they double as a gift bag and decoration. Love your laugh and the cowl is awesome.
This is helpful for folks like myself who would rather not make something for someone and waste my time, but who don't have the money to buy for the people who don't like handmade. I've got some family members that I dearly love, who I want to give things to objectively, but who aren't interested in home-made. So I still don't want to spend time on their projects. But I have to if I wanna gift them anything because otherwise I can't afford it.
I'd want to keep the scrap yarn basket for my ever-growing yarn collection. I don't waste my time and effort on those who won't appreciate the project.
I need to comment on the pot holders which run the risk of melting or flaming if they come into contact with electric burner or flame. My experience is from spinning, weaving, and dying various fibers, and I guarantee that wool is the one fiber that is safe. Synthetic fibers quickly melt and give off toxic gas, cotton catches fire, wool doesn’t. ❤️
Love your video and choices and am a new subscriber. There’s one person in my life who is a forever person, never can please even when said person drops hints…is then unhappy. 🙄 So I decided on a gift certificate, but maybe that will change now…😁 But I must comment for safety, that the pot holders need to be made with wool because other fibers will either melt, possibly on the user (synthetic fibers), or run the risk of catching fire and lifting up and away, with cotton. I speak from experience from working with fibers, spinning and weaving for several years. Anyway thanks for the great video! 💕
. While cotton will burn if it gets to hot or is exposed to a flame, I have cotton potholders I made 5-6 yrs ago. We use them almost daily. They are still going strong. If you are aware in your kitchen, and keep your pot holders away from burners, you should be ok. I have to many family members and friends allergic to wool to have it anywhere in my house.
I have seen a few of your video's before, I think. But this 1 is a favorite! I love your thoughts and ideas (I have made a lot of thinks I loved and loved making for my people at my husbands work and they were never seen again. So I am so here with you. So thank you so much for your help

My favorite thing to do is make a specific item the same for the entire family. This year is scarves. Then I carefully choose the prettiest favorite color for those who appreciate… and a truly ugly color for those that don’t. Eventually they stop asking for handmade 🤣
I know that laugh.. it's the same one I made when I heard that someone in my fiance's fam didn't like me. As if the realization of that fact was supposed to hurt my feelings. If, I still celebrated Christmas, that person would be the one I would gift a toilet paper roll filled with black licorice and wrapped in the prettiest paper, and the same laugh as they opened it! Yes, I know I am a conniving B. 😂
I am an apreciater of handmade things, but, I'm getting a kick out of how much I have in common with the ungreatful crochet gift recipiants here. I love knit/crochet wear but I'd be a nightmare to make a surprise gift for, I'm sure -- I'm always too warm on my upper body, I have skin issues with yarns that nobody else gets annoyed with, I like to pick up my sharp-clawed cats I never wear pullovers, unless they're T-shirts . . . But I really love the art of knit and crochet, so it's incredibly funny that you hit on a number of things I've been considering making while beginning to learn to crochet. When I finnally start to learn crochet, I want to crochet a laundry basket like that in particular. And then lots and lots more baskets. Maybe some cat baskets out of truely wretched-textured synthetic yarn for my sharp-clawed cats, who will take to anything soft that holds their heat in. And ornaments, potholders, bag-dangles . . . Lot of useful mini purses forruns to the corner store, and tote bags and little organizers of every kind. Basically everything except what everyone always suggests making first - no shawls, scarves, blankets or headwear and no chunky pullover swaeters, no matter how alluring. Maybe that a useful gift list for people out there who struggle to get the wonder of yarn craft for reasons of practicality. We aren't all grinches.
This had me from the title! Your channel graced my youtube feed today and I really appreciated a good laugh. Hot take, but this video is actually so toxic. 100% my opinion, but the only people that this video will appeal to are people who have no boundaries and people who need to play the martyr role. I have crocheted for years so I obviously love crochet and crocheted items. Not everyone does. I never make crocheted items for people I LOVE without first knowing if crochet is their aesthetic, much less someone I don’t care for. The only reason someone would do that is to emphasize how awful the other person is and how “caring and selfless” you are. It’s toxic. BUY THEM A $10 GIFT CARD FOR A COFFEE!
Should have said on the title, “for people who you not like to make for.” Even in jest and times like they are, we don’t need to ever use the word “hate!”
I thought this video was going to be a spite video of items to make for people you dislike. Like the woman that puts tiny crocheted p*nises inside amigurumi toys she makes for adults she dislikes. More spite please! 😊

Yes! I'm pro working down your stash so you can buy more!
If using scrap yarn to make the basket, adding a strand of a basic color-white, black, or another color-can "unify" the colors of the scrap yarn.
We don't HAVE to make something for people we don't like. I'm not going to waste my time and resources making something not appreciated.
